Effect of Overlaid White Charcoal Board on the Ethylene Gas Adsorption and Preservation Life of Strawberry (오버레이 백탄보드의 에칠렌가스 흡착과 딸기 보관성 효과)

  • This research was carried out to examine the ethylene gas adsorption and preservation life of white charcoal boards for packaging. Two types of white charcoal board were made of #40-60 charcoal particles and mixed charcoal particles with PVA and MDI resin by wet process. For not only beauty effect but also avoiding stain from touching, white charcoal boards were overlaid with two kinds of overlay material, thin printed paper and non woven fabric. A charcoal board adsorbed ethylene gas much more than the paper and even white charcoal itself. There was no difference between two board types, between overlay treatments, and between overlay materials. Gray mold growth of strawberry arised after 2 days in a paper box and after 4 days in a white charcoal board. Preservation life of white charcoal board box was approximately twice more than that. of a paper box. There was no difference in the ability of keeping freshness between two board types, between overlay treatments, and between overlay materials.

A Survey on the Consumer Packaging Preferences for Mini Pot Flower Plants on Domestic Market in Korea (소형 분화류의 포장재 및 포장용기에 대한 소비자의 기호도 조사)

  • In this study we surveyed the preferences of consumer packaging for mini pot flower plants to improve the flower market application in Korea. The surveys were consisted of the consumers residing in Seoul metropolitan (221), Gyeonsang (70), Jeonla (29), Chungceong (19), Gangwon (7), other provinces (3). A total of 349 eligible respondents (male 173, female 176) were surveyed with a self-administered questionnaire asking on the general characteristics for residents, packaging material, packaging design, type of flower pot, degree of transparency, convenience, consumer's demand for packaging development, a significant point when purchasing the flower pot product. The collected date was analyzed using a chi-square (${\chi}^2$) statistical test in SPSS program. Most residents prefer for mini pot flower plants packed with packaging characteristics of plastic material (56.4%), packaging design of separated type (76.2%), angled type (62.5%), and transparency (48.6%). The other question results showed that major consumer's demand for mini pot flower plants is maintaining the freshness quality and stability structure for them. Transparency of packaging can also affect directly the preferences for purchasing the mini pot flower plants. The packaging structure with a proper shape design may protect the fresh mini pot flower plants from shock or any other damage during distribution. The results of this study help to provide consumer's demand for packaging development and to give the greatest advantages in terms of production and marketability of mini pot flower plants.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine material performance of fiber reinforced cement composite for mass production. It is necessary to manufacture SHCC(Strain Hardening Cement Composite) by batch plant for field application and mass production. For the study, a mock-up test of SHCC manufactured in the batch plant was conducted, and the performance was compared with SHCC manufactured in the laboratory. Assessment items were freshness and hardening properties. Specifically, direct tensile test machine was used for performance verification of SHCC. As a result, there was a tendency of less satisfactory fiber dispersion and performance of strain hardening compared with the performance of SHCC manufactured in the laboratory. To address this, dry mixing and mortar mixing time should be increased compared to laboratory mixing, and injection time of an agent such as a water reducing agent should be properly controlled according to mixing combination, or the capacity to secure dispersion and homogeneity of material.

Effects of Active MA Mini-packaging on Shelf-life Maintenance during Marketing of Perilla Leaves (깻잎의 active MA 소포장이 유통기간 중 신선도 유지에 미치는 영향)

  • Research regarding respiration rate, off-flavor related material and freshness maintenance effect of active MA mini-packaging on perilla leaves has been carried in this study. Respiration rate was highly maintained at high oxygen treatments ($CO_2:O_2:N_2$=0:30:70 and 0:50:50), higher than non-treatment and low oxygen treatments (6:2:92, 0:10:90) during the storage period, and ethylene production was relatively higher. However, off-flavor related materials, acetaldehyde and ethanol production was noticeably low. Weight losses of non-treatment and low-oxygen treatment were about 1.8 and 1.4%, respectively. At the fifth day of storage there was no weight loss. Ascorbic acid content was 13.3 mg/100 g F.W. at the first day of storage. At the third day of storage non-treatment showed the lowest value of ascorbic acid, 8.8 mg/100 g F.W. Ascorbic acid content of active MA treatment gradually decreased without a striking difference as the storage day extended. Chlorophyll content was the lowest at the fifth day of storage with non-treatment, 47.5 (SPAD-502 unit) while the active MA treatment maintained high level of chlorophyll content, 53.0. Sensory evaluation (vision) showed that marketability gradually decreased but was maintained in high oxygen treatments (0:30:70 and 0:50:50), even at the fifth day of storage. Occurrence of off-flavor in non-treatment at the fifth day of storage was extremely low, 2.6; whereas high in high oxygen treatment, 3.4. Active MA packaging maintained freshness two more days at room temperature (about $27^{\circ}C$).

  • There is the uncertain period of the construction in case of the products meeting the quality standard of KS M 6080, the quality is degraded because of the abrasive loss of the paint caused by vehicle tires as the traffic amount increases and of the loss and detachment of the glass beads providing the retroreflective function. The abrupt degradation of visibility causes the high frequency of traffic accidents at night and increases the traffic accident rate. Additional supplementary construction induces the direct material and construction costs. As the more cost induction effect than the direct cost, the traffic jam caused by the additional construction increases the indirect social costs such as time cost and vehicle cost. Hence, the study is concerned with performing the abrasion resistance test based on the EN 1436 standard to check and improve the quality of various road marking materials resulting in improving the durability of road marking materials. However, even though the difference in the durability lifetime of resins(binders) is bibliographically or theoretically clear, there was no difference in the durability lifetime (retroreflectivity aspect) of the road marking paint using these binders. The reason is that the bonding of beads was very insufficient or that the cross density caused by crack or freshness was low. Moreover, the measured wet retroreflectivity was distributed as the Rw3 or higher class in average on the basis of EN 1436 but was very insufficient on the basis of the minimum wet threshold retroreflectivity with 100mcd/($m^2{\cdot}lx$) managed overseas.

  • Packaging of export cut lilies reduces physical damage during distribution like dropping, shock, vibration, compression and serves to protect from necrosis, microbial contamination and decomposition. Study on which packaging materials must be selected is necessary because it serves to direct effect maintaining quality and the degree of freshness. newspaper, perforated OPP film, Oriented Nylon film (ON), punched OPP film, OPP films are used in this study. Plant senescence of lilies was happened rapidly during storage at $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$. Also, water absorption, fresh weight at during storage $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$ In addition, fresh weight of lilies storage at $25^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $5^{\circ}C$ all of the packaging materials except OPP because water absorption of lily storage at $5^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $25^{\circ}C$, thereby suppressing the fresh weight reducing Also, effect on biological activity of lilies from shape of packaging material appears higher during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$. Compared with each packaging materials, newspaper packaging is the smallest effect on changes in biological activity of cut lilies during storage. Thus, the results demonstrate that flowering date are affected mainly by the storage temperature rather than packaging materials.

Changes in Freshness of Endive (Cichorium endivia L.) by Different Packaging Types (엔다이브 포장방법에 따른 저장 중 선도 변화)

  • The effect of packaging material in enhancing the shelf life and maintaining the postharvest quality of endive (Cichorium endivia L.) was studied. Endive were packed in three packaging materials: paper box (control); paper box with endive wrapped in high density polyethylene (HDPE) film; and plastic box container covered with high density polyethylene (HDPE) film. The quality characteristics, such as fresh weight loss, soil plant analysis development (SPAD) value, and appearance of endive were investigated during 20 days of storage at $2^{\circ}C$. The endive wrapped with HDPE film inside the paper box showed the lowest weight loss, highest SPAD value and the best appearance compared to those wrapped in other packaging types during storage. The results indicate that the marketability of endive can be optimized with proper packaging and storage.

Effect of Packaging and Storage Temperature on the Shelf-life Extension of Kidney Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) (풋꼬투리 강낭콩 보관온도가 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • To extend the shelf-life of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) after harvest, we investigated the effect of packaging material and storage temperature. In case of film package, there was no weight loss during storage, but in paper-box package, remarkable weight loss occurred as storage period extended and storage temperature risen. Firmness of kidney bean was greater in low temperature than ambient temperature storage. Content of vitamin C was decreased rapidly during storage, and in paper package, low temperature storage group had lower decrease of vitamin C than that of room temperature. Total chlorophyll content was not difference among storage temperatures in film package treatments. However, in paper-box package, decrease of chlorophyll in room temperature storage was greater than that of low temperature ($8{\sim}10^{\circ}C$). In terms of freshness of kidney bean, we suggest that shelf-life by low temperature storage ($8{\sim}10^{\circ}C$) after PP film or paper package was 8 days, but that by room temperature storage after paper package was 4 days.

Comparison of Packaging Methods to Prolong the Freshness and Quality of Korean Head Cabbage (Brassica rapa). (알배추 포장 방법에 따른 품질 및 선도 비교)

  • The effect of packaging and storage methods in enhancing the shelf life and improving the postharvest quality of the Korean head cabbage (Brassica rapa) used for wrapping vegetables was studied at 10℃. The wrapping cabbage was packed using four types of packaging and storage materials: (A) Perforated PP film; (B) Non-perforated PP film; (C) PVC film for wrapping; and (D) non-packaged as control. The quality parameters, such as fresh appearance, weight loss, hue angle, moisture content, hardness, and SSC of wrapping cabbage were investigated. The weight loss of wrapping cabbage showed a significant difference between the one packaged with film and the non-packaged as control. The general appearance of Korean cabbage stored at 10℃ was not significantly affected by the packaging treatments. However, Korean head cabbage packaged with perforated film tend to show a better external appearance compared with those exposed to the other packaging during three weeks of storage at 10℃. The inside appearance, hue angle, moisture content, hardness, and SSC, gradually decreased during the storage period. No remarkable change in the measured items were observed in Korean cabbage packaging methods. In this experiment, the Korean cabbage packaged inside a PP film with holes, and stored at 10℃ temperature had the most desirable outcome of extending the head cabbage's shelf life and appearance quality. Results suggest that perforated packaging treatment combined with low storage temperature could be an effective method in prolonging the shelf life of Korean cabbage for wrapping vegetable.

Effect of $CO_{2}$ Gas Packaging on the Shelf-life of Refrigerated Pork Cuts (탄산가스 포장에 의한 신선돈육의 저장성향상에 관한 연구)

  • Shelf-life of pork packaged under $CO_{2}$ was observed and the optimal volume of $CO_{2}$ gas was determined. High gas barrier film, EVOH($CO_{2}$ permiability; 1 $cc/cm^{2}{\cdot}24\;h{\cdot}atm$) was used as packaging material and the volume ratios of sample to $CO_{2}$ of 1 : 1, 1 : 3 and 1 : 5 were tried using the control of vacuum packaged pork. To ev.3luate quality of pork cuts, total plate counts, TBA, color and sensory score were monitored during the storage at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 31 days. TPC of vacuum packaged pork increased up to $4.6{\times}10^{6}\;CFU/cm^{2}$ in 24 days while that of $CO_{2}$ gas packaged pork $4.5{\times}10^{5}\;CFU/cm^{2}$ at the same storage period, and it took 7 days more for gas packaged pork to reach the same TPC count. There was no significant difference in TBA value between vacuum packaged and gas packaged pork. In the color L and a values were not affected by treatment but vacuum packaged pork cuts showed higher b value than gas packaged pork. According to sensory evaluation, gas packaged pork showed less off flavor, better flavor and freshness than vacuum packaged one (P<0.05).
