  • Fast fashion companies have generated enormous amounts of clothing and large quantities of unsold or short-lived clothing end up in the landfill. As if to counter fast fashion, sustainable fashion has arisen for environmentally friendly garments at different levels from the fiber stage to production stage. However it is still fraught with uncertainty of systems in the industry. Therefore, this study proposed a system to create re-valued clothing from recycled garments for retailers. The target companies are large-sized retailers like Levi's, Polo, Gap, or J-Crew which are consistently producing basic items such as Levi's 501 or Classic Polo shirts with middle-prices. At the material stage, this study recommended additional requirements of designing a garment with a long life cycle based on criteria of an ideal garment developed by Patagonia clothing company. Then, this study explored innovative ways that retailers might connect with consumers to allow direct interaction between them in terms of the process of collecting used clothes. Using recycled clothing as a source material, this study strove to offer a process of redesign where the concept of 'waste to fashion' is developed as reconstructions where old forms are transformed into new ones.

  • The Quantum Hall Resistance(QHR) device which consists of GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction structure is used for the realization of QHR Standard based on QHE. In order to characterize electrical contact resistances and dissipations of the device, it is slowly cooled down for eliminating thermal shock and unwanted noise. Then, the two properties are measured under 1.5 K and 5.15 T. Contact resistances are all within 1.2 Ω and longitudinal resistivities are all within 1 mΩ up to DC 90${\mu}$A. The results mean the device is operated well to realize the QHR Standard. To confirm it, the QHR Standard having the device is compared using a direct current comparator bridge with a 1 Ω resistance standard which the calibrated value is known from QHR standards maintained by other countries. The difference between them is agreed well within measurement uncertainty. It is thus considered that the properties of the device is estimated well and has good performance.

  • Glass reference materials have been essentially used for precise geochemistry analytical techniques. In order to make up for the drawback of synthetic glass reference materials, which have the high uncertainty caused by the difference in composition of natural rocks, we introduce a glass geostandard using natural glass. The NK-B1G sample, which comes from the Baekdusan obsidian, is a natural glassy rock that contains only few crystals such as microlites or inclusions. We examined the feasibility of the sample as a reference material for microanalysis like EPMA or LA-ICPMS.

  • Current limit state design method for encased composite columns contains irrational and uncertain design equations in defining section and material properties of composite members. Through investigating previous research used in formulating the design equation, this paper explores the irrationality and uncertainty such as 1) transformation of yield stress and elastic modulus for composite section, 2) an equation influencing buckling strength in terms of area rather than moment of inertia, and 3) selection of larger radius of gyration between steel and concrete sections. Improving the design equations this paper proposes two design methods which can be directly used in practical design.

  • Adaptive schemes are constructed in this paper for modeling the effective chloride diffusion coefficient of cement-based materials (paste and concrete). Based on the polarization approximations for the effective conductivity of isotropic multicomponent materials, we develop some fitting procedures to include more information about the materials, to improve the accuracy of the scheme. The variable reference parameter of the approximation involves a few free scalars, which are determined through the available numerical or experimental values of the macroscopic chloride diffusion coefficient of cement paste or concrete at some volume proportions of the component materials. The various factors that affect the chloride diffusivity of cement-based material (porous material structure, uncertainty of value of the chloride diffusion coefficient in water-saturated pore spaces, etc.) may be accounted to make the predictions more accurate. Illustrations of applications are provided in a number of examples to show the usefulness of the approach.

  • The area of this study will cover the location-wise seismic response variation of an electrical cabinet in nuclear power point (NPP) based on classical reliability analysis. The location-based seismic ground motion (GM) selection is carried out with the help of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis using PSHRisktool, where the variation of reliability analysis can be understood from the relation between the reliability index and intensity measure. Two different approaches such as the first-order second moment method (FOSM) and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) are helped to evaluate and compare the reliability assessment of the cabinet. The cabinet is modeled with material uncertainty utilizing Steel01 as the material model and the fiber section modeling approach is considered to characterize the section's nonlinear reaction behavior. To verify the modal frequency, this study compares the FEM result with recorded data using Least-Squares Complex Exponential (LSCE) method from the impact hammer test. In spite of a few investigations, the main novelty of this study is to introduce the reader to check and compare the seismic reliability assessment variation in different seismic locations and for different earthquake levels. Alongside, the betterment can be found by comparing the result between two considered reliability estimation methods.

  • The parent and daughter nuclides in a radioactive decay chain arrive at secular equilibrium once they have a large half-life difference. The characteristics of this equilibrium state can be used to estimate the production time of nuclear materials. In this study, a mathematical model and algorithm that can be applied to radio-chronometry using the radioactive equilibrium relationship were investigated, reviewed, and implemented. A Bateman equation that can analyze the decay of radioactive materials over time was used for the mathematical model. To obtain a differential-based solution of the Bateman equation, an algebraic numerical solution approach and two different matrix exponential functions (Moral and Levy) were implemented. The obtained result was compared with those of commonly used algorithms, such as the Chebyshev rational approximation method and WISE Uranium. The experimental analysis confirmed the similarity of the results. However, the Moral method led to an increasing calculation uncertainty once there was a branching decay, so this aspect must be improved. The time period corresponding to the production of nuclear materials or nuclear activity can be estimated using the proposed algorithm when uranium or its daughter nuclides are included in the target materials for nuclear forensics.

  • Non-uniformity of Pu and Cm composition in used nuclear fuel was analyzed to determine its effect on Pu accountancy in pyroprocessing, while employing the Pu-to-244Cm ratio method. Burnup simulation of a typical pressurized water reactor fuel assembly, required for the analysis, was carried out using MCNP code. Used fuel nuclide composition, as a function of nine axial and two radial meshes, were evaluated. The axial variation of neutron flux and self-shielding effects were found to affect the uniformity of Pu and Cm compositions and in turn the Pu-to-244Cm ratio. However, the results of the study showed that these non-uniformities do not affect the use of Pu-to-244Cm ratio method for Pu accountancy, if the measurement samples are drawn from the voloxidized powder at the feed step of pyroprocessing. 'Material Unaccounted For' and its uncertainty estimates are also presented for a pyrprocessing facility to verify safeguards monitoring requirements of the IAEA.

  • Double side polishing process has been used for various industrial applications, such as polishing of semiconductor substrates and flat panel display glasses. In wafer manufacturing, double side polishing process is applied to improve wafer flatness and to minimize particle generation from wafers in device manufacturing processes, which is recognized as one of the most important processes. Whereas the kinematical modeling and analysis results of single side polishing, extensively used for chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) in device manufacturing, are well investigated, the studies in conjunction with double side polishing are barely carried out, due to the complication of polishing system and the uncertainty of wafer motion in the carrier. This paper suggests the derivation of kinematical model with consideration of carrier and wafer motion in double side polishing, and then presents the effect of kinematical parameters on material removal amount and its non-uniformity. The kinematical analysis results help to understand the double side polishing process and to control the polishing results.

  • In this paper, the effects of uncertain material constant on the nonlinear behavior of steel frames with semi-rigid joints are examined. As to the probabilistic model, a normal distribution is assumed to simulate the uncertain elastic modulus of steel material. A nonlinear structural analysis program, which can consider both semi-rigidity in joints of the steel frames and uncertainty in the material constant, is developed. Including the geometric, material and connection nonlinearites which are the parameters of nonlinear behavior of steel frames, probabilistic analysis is conducted based on the Monte-Carlo simulation. In the probabilistic analyses, we consider the three different cases for random variables. The deterministic analysis results are shown to be in good agreement with those of the previous research results in the literature. As to the probabilistic analyses, it is observed that the coefficient of variation(COV) of displacements increases as the loading increases, and that the values of COV are dependent on the structural features of the frames.
