To define the causes of cladding degradation which can take place during the operation of nuclear power plants, it is required to develop the new fracture toughness test of spent fuel cladding. The fracture toughness of Zircaloy-4 cladding was estimated using the recently developed KAERI embedded Charpy (KEC) specimen. Axially notched KEC specimens cut directly from unirradiated fuel claddings, were tested in a way similar to the standard toughness test method of a Single Edge Bending (SEB) specimen. The results of KEC fracture toughness test at room temperatures were discussed and compared with those of the previous other studies. In conclusions, even though the KEC fracture toughness test of nuclear fuel claddings was easier and more reliable than those developed earlier, the results from the cladding fracture tests were not the material characteristics but the specific fracture parameters which were deeply related to the specification of claddings. In addition, the phenomenon of a thickness yielding was not observed from the fracture surface. It was closely related to the fact that the plane strain condition of the KEC specimen was changed to the plane stress condition during crack advancing. It was also supported by the fractographic evidence that the formation of ductile dimples at the crack initiation became the similar appearance such as a quasi-cleavage after the sufficient crack advancing.
In recent years, perhaps the biggest driver in new material development is the desire to improve crown and bridge esthetics compared to the traditional PFM or all-metal restorations. As such, zirconia, leucite-containing glass ceramic and lithium disilicate glass ceramic have become prominent in the dental practice. Each material type performs differently regarding strength, toughness, ease of machining and the final preparation of the material prior to placement. For example, glass ceramic are typically weaker materials which limits its use to single-unit restorations. On the other hand, zirconia has a high fracture toughness which enables multi-unit restorations. This material requires a long sintering procedure which excludes its use for fast chair side production. Developed hybrid material of CAD/CAM is contained nano ceramic elements. This new material, called a Resin Nano Ceramic is unique in durability and function. The material is not a resin or composite. It is also not a pure ceramic. The material is a mixture of both and consists of ceramic. Like a composite, the material is not brittle and is fracture resistant. Like a glass ceramic, the material has excellent polish retention for lasting esthetics. The material is easily machined chair side or in a dental lab, polishes quickly to an esthetic finish and if necessary, can be useful restoratives.
The present work reviews the methods to evaluate elastic-plastic material characteristics by indentation tests. Especially the representative stress and strain values used in some papers are critically analyzed. The values should not only represent the load-depth curve, but also represent the whole of deformed material around the impression. We briefly introduce other indentation techniques to evaluate residual stresses, creep properties, and fracture toughness. We also review some technical problems that are related to the accuracy issues in indentation tests.
Ongoing efforts for improved fracture toughness of engineered cementitious materials address the inherent brittleness of the binding matrix at several different levels of the material's geometric scale through the addition of various types of reinforcing fibers. Crack control is required for crack widths that cover the entire range of the grain size spectrum of the material, and this dictates the requirement of hybrid mixes combining fibers of different size (nano, micro, macro). Use of Carbon Nano-Tubes (CNT) and Carbon Nano-Fibers (CNFs) as additives is meant to extend the crack-control function down to the nanoscale where cracking is believed to initiate. In this paper the implications of enhanced toughness thus attained at the material nanostructure are explored, with reference to the global smeared constitutive properties of the material, through consistent interpretation of the reported experimental evidence regarding the behavior of engineered cementitious products to direct and indirect tension.
ZnS-$SiO_2$ composite is normally used for sputtering target. In recent years, high sputtering power for higher deposition rate often causes crack formation of the target. Therefore the target material is required that the sintered target material should have high crack resistance, excellent strength and a homogeneous microstructure with high sintered density. In this study, raw ZnS and ZnS-$SiO_2$ powders prepared by a 3-D mixer or high energy ball-milling were successfully densified by spark plasma sintering, the effective densification method of hard-to-sinter materials in a short time. After sintering, the fracture toughness was measured by the indentation fracture (IF) method. Due to the effect of crack deflection by the residual stress occurred by the second phase of fine $SiO_2$, the hardness and fracture toughness reached to 3.031 GPa and $1.014MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
This paper describes the effect of loading rate, specimen geometries and material properties for Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of hybrid composite by using end notched flexure(ENF) specimen. In the range of loading rate 0.5~2mm/min, there is found to be no significant effect of loading rate with the value of critical energy release rate( $G_{IIc}$). there is no dependence of the interlaminar fracture energy upon the specimen width over the specimen widths examined. The value of $G_{IIc}$ for variation of initial crack length are nearly similiar values when material properties are CF/CF and GF/GF, however, the value of $G_{IIc}$ are highest with the increasing intial crack length at CF/GF. The values of $G_{IIc}$ for variation material properties are higher with the increasing moulding pressure when moulding pressures are 307, 431, 585㎪. The SEM photographs show good fiber distribution and interfacial bonding of hybrid composites when the moulding is the CF/GF.e CF/GF.

Electron beam (EB) and Gas tungsten arc (TIG) welds were performed on 12.7 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V plate (ASTM Titanium Grade 5). Charpy-V toughness and hardness, as well as, microstructure of the welds and penetration from the macrostructure were studied. It appears that by EB welding rather smaller $\beta$-grains than with TIG welding can be obtained. Next to the fusion line the $\beta$-grain size in the HAZ was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$l while in the weld metal it was 150 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Charpy-V toughness of the EB weld metal was equal or even better to that of base metal, which shows that the $\alpha$-martensite per se is not particularly brittle if only the grain size is fine enough. This is similar to behavior of low carbon martensite in steel. The grain size was studied with light optical and scanning electron (SEM) microscopes. Thus for products, for products which can be manufactured automatically with very narrow fit, the EB welding of Ti-6Al-4V appears to yield satisfactory toughness without any complex post weld heat treatment. ill this study as in earlier studies the TIG welds gave lower toughness than that of the base material due to the higher heat input and slower cooling as compared to EB welding.
Reduced activation ferritic steel (JLF-1) is considered as a promising candidate material for blanket or first-wall structure of D-T fusion reactors. The fracture tests of fracture resistance curve (J-R curve) and $J_{IC}$ are desirable to investigate the exact fracture toughness of JLF-1 steel, since it has a high ductility. The fracture toughness of JLF-1 steel is affected by the configuration of test specimen such side groove, specimen thickness or specimen size. In this study, the fracture toughness tests were performed with various size(plane size and thickness) and various side groove of specimens. The test results showed the standard specimen with the side groove of 40 % represented a valid fracture toughness. The fracture resistance curve increased with increasing plane size and decreased with increasing thickness. However, the fracture resistance curve of half size specimen was similar to that of the standard specimen.
It is reported that the toughness and safety margins of the SA106 Gr.C main steam line piping steel is reduced due to dynamic strain aging (DSA) at the reactor operating temperature for Leak-Before-Break (LBB) application. In this study, intercritical annealing in two-phase ($\alpha$+${\gamma}$)region was performed to investigate the possibility of improving the toughness and reducing DSA susceptibility. The manifestations of DSA were still observed in the tensile tests of the annealed specimens. However, the ductility loss caused by DSA was smaller than that in the as-received material. Furthermore, the intercritical annealing was able to increase the Charpy impact toughness by 1.5 times compared to as-received. With the heat treatment, we could obtain microstructural changes such as the cleaner retained ferrite, increased ferrite content and somewhat finer grain size. It is considered that the reduced DSA was induced by cleaner retained ferrite, which in turn resulted in higher impact toughness in addition to the general toughening due to finer grain sizes and increased ferrite content.
Fracture toughness JIC and KIC tests were performed on A516 Gr70 carbon steel plate at the temperature ranging from -$160^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$, and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813 and ASTM E 399. Unloading compliance J-integral tests were performed on 1TCT specimens. The relation between the $J_{IC}$ value and the test temperature was obtained. It was concluded that the temperature ranging from $-15^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ is the upper shelf region of ductile-brittle transition temperature, and in this temperature range, fracture toughness $J_{IC}$ values decreased with increasing temperature. The ductile brittle transition temperature of the material may be around $-30^{\circ}C$. In the region near $-30^{\circ}C$, the tendency of $J_{IC}$ to decrease with decreasing temperature was significant.
