  • Specific techniques and materials in conservation of traditional lacquer has not been transmitted. This study aims to compare the basic characteristics of the filler which used in the base layer of lacquer conservation. Tohoe(a mixture of lacquer and Clay) and the three kinds of additives which is mixed with Tohoe and Goksu(a mixture of lacquer, wood powder and rice starch) are estimated in drying rate, impact resistance, abrasion. Among those samples, the more amount of clay causes fast dryness speed and worse cracks on the surface. The impact resistance is weakened at high amount of clay. There is no significant differences of impact resistance between both additives that is mixed with the samples and additives. The samples that are mixed with Goksu and additives show high impact resistance. In the polishing test, the more amount of filling powders show higher grinding degree and the sample that are mixed with wood powder and charcoal show higher degree as well. The highest grinding degree is Maekchil and Goksu but the lowest one is the sample of the rooftile powder mixture.

  • Purpose: The authors investigated whether 35 flexible nail-rotating hinge composite reconstructions around knee joint minimize junctional osteolysis of host bone. Material and Method: The reconstructive technique was as follows: 1) en bloc tumor resection, 2) filling of the host bone marrow cavity with multiple Ender nails, 3) assembling the Ender nails and an Endo-Link type total knee component with wire and bone cement. Result: Mean follow-up was 53 months (ranged 30~79). At final follow-up, 29 patients retained a mobile joint. Resection of more than 40% of bone showed a positive relationship with junctional hypertrophy (p=0.028). Eight patients showed nail breakage and eight prostheses were removed due to early or late infection. The cumulative prosthetic survival rate was 33% at 6 year. Average functional score according to the MSTS criteria was 26.8. Conclusion: Mid-term evaluations showed that results were fair. The revision process was straightforward. Junctional hypertrophy observed appears to give some clues as to how to minimize osteolysis at the prosthesis-host junction after modular prosthesis fixation.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fluoride release and anticariogenic effect of two compomers which is known to have been developed to improve the weak properties of glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Z-100 as composite resin(Group I), Dyract AP(Group II) and F-2000(Group III) as compomer, and Fuji II LC as glass ionomer cement(Group IV) were used as test materials and evaluations were peformed by pH/ISE meter far analyses of fluoride and polarizing microscope for analyses of anticariogenicity. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The amount of fluoride release in compoite resin and compomer groups showed general pattern of decline during test period. Z-100 showed no fluoride release during test period. Fuji II LC showed the highest fluoride release among test groups and then F-2000 were followed. 2. The least resistance to dimineralization was observed microscopically in Z-100 group which has no fluoride in it. The best resistance to dimineralization was observed microscopically in Fuji II LC group and then compomer groups were followed. 3. Significant difference in lesion area was found between Fuji II LC group and another groups. Significant difference in lesion area was found between compomer groups and Z-100 group. No significant difference in lesion area was found between Dyract AP group and F-2000 cup. 4. Two compomers showed continual fluoride release and anticariogenic effect around filling materials. therefore, compomer was evaluated very attractive restorative material in pediatric dentistry.

  • During the last two decades, many new filling materials and material groups have been developed. the number of available restoratives has increased dramatically, especially during the last 5 years. Ormocers are a new class of materials which are still under development with regard to dental applications. However, in the chemical literature these materials have been known for a long time and used for producing scratch resistant coatings on plastic spectacle lenses. It is a combination of inorganic and organic materials. 'Ormocer' is an abbreviation for 'Organically Modified Ceramics'. These compounds are also known in the literature as 'Ormosils' (organically modified silicates). Their chemistry is comparable to that of silicones and organic polymers. The purpose of this study was to determine of compressive strength and flexural strength of a ormocer (Admira) and to investigate the effects of water absorption in comparison with three composite resins(Z-100, Tetric Ceram, Surefil) and one compomer(Dyract AP). The following results were obtained ; 1. Admira had the lower compressive strength than Surefil, but no statistically difference with other materials at 1 day(p>0.05). 2. Admira had the lower flexural strength than all other materials at 1 day. From 2 days, Admits showed lower flexural strength than three composite resin(p<0.05). 3. There was not statistically significant difference of compressive and flexural strengths between hybrid composite resin group(Z-100, Tetric Ceram) and Packable resin group(Surefil) for experimental period(30 days)(p>0.05). 4. All five materials showed an increase in compressive and flexural strength till 2 days and showed a decrease from 7 days in water(p<0.05). 5. Each materials had the statistically similar behavior of compressive and flexural strengths over time(p>0.05).

  • The use of fly ash as a contaminant barrier material was studied. Mixing ratio of fly ash to bentonite to meet the requirements for landfill liners was determined. The hydraulic behavior exhibited by the fly ash-bentonite liner and the effects of CaO were investigated through hydraulic conductivity tests under various conditions and microscopic analyses including XRD, SEM, helium porosimetry, and image analysis. The hydraulic conductivity of compacted fly ash decreased with the addition of bentonite, which was due mainly to the expanding of bentonite and partly to the filling of voids by chemical reaction products among constituents of the artificial liner. Because of insufficient CaO content, and rich in content but low-reactive $SiO_2$ contained in the fly ashes used, pozzolanic reaction and resulting effects in the artificial liner were not significant. The reactions among constituting materials and their resulting effects on hydraulic conductivity were controlled not by the apparent amounts of each constituent, but by reaction activities of the materials in the artificial liner.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the detection ability of secondary caries using qunatitative light-induce fluorescence-digital (QLF-D) device. Twenty bovine teeth with cavity on surface were demineralized during 21 days for secondary caries lesion of cavity wall. After 21 days, cavity was filled using composite resin and cut the specimen in half with disc. Fluorescence loss of lesion on surface by time flow, cross sectional lesion, and lesion of filled or unfilled surface were analyzed using analysis software. ${\Delta}F$ (value of fluorescence loss) of the lesion on surface assessed by the QLF-D increased significantly over time up to 21 days. And ${\Delta}F$ value of lesion of filled surface is significantly lower than that of unfilled surface (p<0.001). ${\Delta}F$ of filled surface is 1.31 times of cross section lesion. The correlation of between ${\Delta}F$ of filled surface lesion and ${\Delta}F$ of cross section lesion was showed low agreement (0.026) and correlation of between ${\Delta}F$ of unfilled surface lesion and ${\Delta}F$ of cross section lesion was showed high agreement (0.613). In conclusion, secondary caries can be detected on surface using QLF-D. However, interference of fluorescence of filling material is the points to be especially considered for exact analysis of secondary caries lesion.

  • Compared with other medical parts, there are relatively rare cases of the calculi in the Otolaryngologic field. The authors have recently experienced cases of the tonsillolith and huge rhinolith. They were removed successfully under the local anesthesia. Small quantities of calcareous or gritty particles are often found in the center of the caseous plugs filling the crypts of the tonsil in chronic follicular tonsillitis. The patients usually give a history of repeated tonsillitis in the earlier years. The patient may be aware of a constant sensation as of a foreign body in the throat. The breath is often fetid. The tonsillar calculi was found to be the accumulated keratohyalin masses in the crypts. The rhinoliths are rare in nasal cavity. They usualy have a foreign body nucleus of bacteria, blood, pus cells, mucus, crusts, or some foreign material from outside the body. They are largely composed of calcium and magnesium salts, principally carbonate with traces of sodium chloride. The condition is commonly found in adults and in female. They are usualy unilateral and are located, in the majority of instances, in the lower portion of the nasal cavity. The first well documented cases of rhinolithiasis, however, were reported by Bartholin in 1654. Since then over 400 cases have been reported.

  • Geotextile tribes are made of sewn geotextile sheet and hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials. They have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(shore protection structure, detached breakwater, groins, and jetty). Therefore, it is composed of geotextile and confined fill material. Recently, new preliminary design criteria supported by model and prototype tests, and some stability analysis calculations have been studied. The stability analysis of geotextile tube is composed of geotechnical and hydrodynamic analysis. The stability check points are sliding failure, overturning, bearing capacity failure against the wave attack. In this paper are presented the stability analysis method by empirical equation and 2-D equilibrium analysis for geotextile tube. Also, the hydraulic model tests were performed to verify the theoretical stability analysis with geotextile tube shape, filling ratio, significant wave height, and so on. The results of this study show that the stability of geotextile tube depends on the tube shape, contact area, projection area. The theoretical analysis and hydraulic model test show almost the same results.

  • The Incheon Bridge, which was opened to the traffic in October 2009, is an 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge connecting the Incheon International Airport with the expressway networks around the Seoul metropolitan area by way of Songdo District of Incheon City. This bridge is an integration of several special featured bridges and the major part of the bridge consists of cable-stayed spans. This marine cable-stayed bridge has a main span of 800 m wide to cross the vessel navigation channel in and out of the Incheon Port. In waterways where ship collision is anticipated, bridges shall be designed to resist ship impact forces, and/or, adequately protected by ship impact protection (SIP) systems. For the Incheon Bridge, large diameter circular dolphins as SIP were made at 44 locations of the both side of the main span around the piers of the cable-stayed bridge span. This world's largest dolphin-type SIP system protects the bridge against the collision with 100,000 DWT tanker navigating the channel with speed of 10 knots. Diameter of the dolphin is up to 25 m. Vessel collision risk was assessed by probability based analysis with AASHTO Method-II. The annual frequency of bridge collapse through the risk analysis for 71,370 cases of the impact scenario was less than $0.5{\times}10^{-4}$ and satisfies design requirements. The dolphin is the circular sheet pile structure filled with crushed rock and closed at the top with a robust concrete cap. The structural design was performed with numerical analyses of which constitutional model was verified by the physical model experiment using the geo-centrifugal testing equipment. 3D non-linear finite element models were used to analyze the structural response and energy-dissipating capability of dolphins which were deeply embedded in the seabed. The dolphin structure secures external stability and internal stability for ordinary loads such as wave and current pressure. Considering failure mechanism, stability assessment was performed for the strength limit state and service limit state of the dolphins. The friction angle of the crushed stone as a filling material was reduced to $38^{\circ}$ considering the possibility of contracting behavior as the impact.
