The influence of surface elasticity and surface residual stress on the elastic field of an isotropic nanoscale elastic layer of finite thickness bonded to a rigid material base is considered by employing the Gurtin-Murdoch continuum theory of elastic material surfaces. The fundamental solutions corresponding to buried vertical and horizontal line loads are obtained by using Fourier integral transform techniques. Selected numerical results are presented for the cases of a finite elastic layer and a semi-infinite elastic medium to portray the influence of surface elasticity and residual surface stress on the bulk stress field. It is found that the bulk stress field depends significantly on both surface elastic constants and residual surface stress. The consideration of out-of-plane terms of the surface stress yields significantly different solutions compared to previous studies. The solutions presented in this study can be used to examine a variety of practical problems involving nanoscale/soft material systems and to develop boundary integral equations methods for such systems.
The current study presents a new technique in the framework of the nonlocal elasticity theory for a comprehensive buckling analysis of Euler-Bernoulli nano-beams made up of bidirectional functionally graded material (BDFGM). The mechanical properties are considered by exponential and arbitrary variations for axial and transverse directions, respectively. The various circumstances including tapering, resting on two-parameter elastic foundation, step-wise or continuous variations of axial loading, various shapes of sections with various distribution laws of mechanical properties and various boundary conditions like the multi-span beams are taken into account. As far as we know, for the first time in the current work, the buckling analyses of BDFGM nano-beams are carried out under mentioned circumstances. The critical buckling loads and mode shapes are calculated by using energy method and a new technique based on calculus of variations and collocation method. Fast convergence and excellent agreement with the known data in literature, wherever possible, presents the efficiency of proposed technique. The effects of boundary conditions, material and taper constants, foundation moduli, variable axial compression and small-scale of nano-beam on the buckling loads and mode shapes are investigated. Moreover the analytical solutions, for the simpler cases are provided in appendices.
Acoustic characteristics of a sound absorbing material can be identified, if the characteristic impedance and propagation constants are known, which have generally been determined experimentally. One easy method determining these two essential parameters is to measure the one dimensional wave characteristics in the impedance tube. In th udy, the effects of backing conditions on the impedance tube measurement have been examined using several pairs of generally used end conditions. The results showed that the measured values are similar for most pairs of end conditions: however, it was observed that the measured characteristic impedance for different thickness did not agree well for some pairs. In this work, the multi termination method, using three or more known backing con ns, was suggested to reduce such random errors, which are mostly caused by the test procedure. Employing three terminations as a set, comprised of a rigid end, an end with porous material, and an end with a backing cavity, it was demonstrated that improved measured results could be obtained for an open cell PU foam varying widely with three different thicknesses.
This study was carried out to examine degradation characteristics of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in methane fermentation. We measured COD and VS reduction, gas and methane productivity, VFA (volatile fatty acid), respectively. Then we calculated material balance and hydrolysis rates in soluble and solid material. The substrate concentration was controlled from 14 gCOD$_{cr}$/l to 64 gCOD$_{cr}$/l in batch cultures, and HRT (hydraulic retention time) controlled from 2 days to 30 days in continuous experi- ments. The results were as follows. In batch culture, accumulated gas productivity increased with the increase of the substrate concentration. The SS and VSS was removed all about 30% increase of substrate concentration and the most of the degradable material removed during the first 10 days. The curve of gas and methane production rate straightly increased until substrate concentration is 26 gCOD$_{cr}$/l. In continuous culture experiments, the removal rates at HRT 10days were 20% for total COD and TOC, respectively. At longer HRT, there was no increase in the removal efficiency. At HRT 15 days, the removal rates were 30% for SS and VSS, respectively. Soluble organic materials were rapidly degraded, and so there was no accumulated. Soluble COD concentration was not increase regardless of HRT-increasing. That meaned the hydrolysis was one of the rate-limiting stage of methane fermentation. The first-order rate constants of hydrolysis were 0.23-0.28 day$^{-1}$ for VSS, and 0.07-0.08 day$^{-1}$ for COD.
This paper describes the electrical characteristics of Nomex paper employed as an insulating material of distribution transformers. The relative permittivities(dielectric constants) and $tan{\delta}$(dielectric dissipation factors) were measured as a dielectric characteristic and the partial discharge inception voltages(PDIVs) and breakdown voltages were also measured as an electrical strength characteristic of Nomex paper. As a result, the permittivity and $tan{\delta}$ of Nomex paper showed temperature and frequency dependency. Especially, the permittivity of 0.18mm Nomex paper was 2.4 according to the ASTM condition. And the PDIVs and breakdown voltages were, almost linearly increased with the thickness of Nomex paper and its electrical strength was better than conventional kraft paper.
We manufactured Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) and (1-x)$BaTiO_3-xSrTiO_3$(BST) ceramic composites and investigated dielectric properties to use as embedded capacitor in printed circuit boards and replace LTCC substrates. The dielectric properties of these composites are varied with volume fraction of BST and ratios of BT/ST. Dielectric constants are in the range of 3~28. In addition, we could get low TCC and High Q value that could not achieve in other ceramic-polymer composites. Especially, in composite with x=0.4 and 50vol% BST, the dieletric constant and Q-value are 27 and 300, respectively. And more TCC is -116~145ppm/$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of -55~$125^{\circ}C$. We think that this composites can be used high-Q substrate material like LTCC and embedded temperature compensation capacitor in printed circuit boards.
The effects of $Y_2$$O_3$-substitution on the piezoelectric properties of Pb[(N $i_{1}$3/N $b_{2}$3/)$_{0.15}$(Z $r_{1}$2/ $Ti_{1}$2/)$_{0.85}$] $O_3$ceramics were investigated. It was found that $Y^{3+}$ ions incorporate into Pb-sites of the ceramics, resulting in a increased lattice anisotropy and formation of Pb-vacancies. As a result, an orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition was induced when $\chi$>0.005. At the morphotropic phase boundary of x=0.005, piezoelectric constants( $k_{p}$, $k_{33}$, and $d_{33}$) showed maximum values of 0.53, 0.58, and 350pC/N, respectively. A 30-layer actuator fabricated with the above material showed a maximum strain of 0.12% under 100V DC bias.
We manufactured Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) and (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 (CT-LA) ceramic composites and investigated dielectric properties to use as embedded capacitor in printed circuit boards and replace LTCC substrate. The dielectric properties of these composites are varied with volume fraction of CT-LA and ratios of CT/LA. Dielectric constants are in the range of 3~15. In addition, we could get low TCC and High Q value that could not achieve in other ceramic-polymer composites. Especially, in composite with x=0.01 and 30 vol% CT-LA, the dieletric constant and Q-value are 10 and 200, respectively. And more TCC is $-28{\sim}300ppm/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of $-55{\sim}125^{\circ}C$. We think that this composites can be used high-Q substrate material like LTCC and embedded temperature compensation capacitor in printed circuit boards.
This is the first attempt to consider the nonlinear bending analysis of porous functionally graded (FG) thick annular and circular nanoplates resting on Kerr foundation. The size effects are captured based on modified couple stress theory (MCST). The material properties of the porous FG nanostructure are assumed to vary smoothly through the thickness according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. The elastic medium is modeled by Kerr elastic foundation which consists of two spring layers and one shear layer. The governing equations are extracted based on Hamilton's principle and two variables refined plate theory. Utilizing generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), the nonlinear static behavior of the nanostructure is obtained under different boundary conditions. The effects of various parameters such as material length scale parameter, boundary conditions, and geometrical parameters of the nanoplate, elastic medium constants, porosity and FG index are shown on the nonlinear deflection of the annular and circular nanoplates. The results indicate that with increasing the material length scale parameter, the nonlinear deflection is decreased. In addition, the dimensionless nonlinear deflection of the porous annular nanoplate is diminished with the increase of porosity parameter. It is hoped that the present work may provide a benchmark in the study of nonlinear static behavior of porous nanoplates.
Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), a new green energy, that have various potential applications, such as energy harvesters and self-powered sensors. The output performance of TENGs has been improving rapidly, and their output power significantly increased since they were first reported owing to improved triboelectrification materials and interfacial material engineering. Because the operation of a TENG is based on contact electrification in which electric charges are exchanged at the interface between two materials, its output can be increased by increasing the contact area and charge density. Material surface modification with microstructures or nanostructures has increased the output performance of TENGs significantly because not only does the sharp micro/nano morphology increases the contact area during friction, but it also increases the charge density. Chemical treatment in which ions or functional groups are added has also been used to improve the performance of TENGS by modifying the work functions, charge densities, and dielectric constants of the triboelectric materials. In addition, ultrahigh output power from TENGs without using new materials or treatments has been obtained in many studies in which special structures were designed to control the current release or to collect the charge current directly. In this review, we discuss physical and chemical treatments, bulk modifications, and interfacial engineering for enhancing TENG performance by improving contact electrification and electrostatic induction.
