  • In rock, there are many microsopic structures which influence the mechnical behavior of rock. Many microstructures interact with each other, and furthermore, material constants vary discontinuously within rock, as most rocks are composed of several minerals. Taking into account this feature, it may be possible to contemplate a microstructure of rock as a unit cell by which the rock is constituted periodically. If this idealization is acceptable, the homogenization method can be applied. In this research, various microcracks on rock specimens were observed through a stereoscopic microscope under uniaxial compression. On the other hand, local stress distribution in the periodic-micro structure was calculated by the homogenization method. Then it is shown that there is a possibility to establish a relation between the behavior of microcrack and macroscopic load quantitatively by the linear fracture mechanics.

  • The present article researches large-amplitude thermal free vibration characteristics of nonlocal two-phase piezo-magnetic nano-size beams having geometric imperfections by considering piezoelectric reinforcement scheme. The piezoelectric reinforcement can cause an enhanced vibration behavior of smart nanobeams under magnetic field. All previous studies on vibrations of piezoelectric-magnetic nano-size beams ignore the influences of geometric imperfections which are crucial since a nanobeam is not always ideal or perfect. Nonlinear governing equations of a smart nanobeam are derived based on classical beam theory and an analytical trend is provided to obtain nonlinear vibration frequency. This research shows that changing the volume fraction of piezoelectric phase in the material has a great influence on vibration behavior of smart nanobeam under electric and magnetic fields. Also, it can be seen that nonlinear vibration behaviors of smart nanobeam is dependent on the magnitude of exerted electric voltage, magnetic imperfection amplitude and substrate constants.

  • In this paper the stochastic analysis of semi-infinite domain is presented using the weighted integral method, which is expanded to include the infinite finite elements. The semi-infinite domain can be thought as to have more uncertainties than the ordinary finite domain in material constants, which shows the needs of and the importance of the stochastic finite element analysis. The Bettess's infinite element is adopted with the theoretical decomposition of the strain matrix to calculate the deviatoric stiffness of the semi-infinite domains. The calculated value of mean and the covariance of the displacement are revealed to be larger than those given by the finite domain assumptions giving the rational results which should be considered in the design of structures on semi-infinite domains.

  • We study a mixture of ideal gases by use of recently developed methods in continuum thermodynamics of irreversible processes. A complete form of the free energy function and the gas law for each component are derived directly from an entropy production inequality by assuming that: (1) Constitutive functions depend on the mass densities, the diffusion velocities, the temperature and its gradient only. (2) Phenomenological coefficients appearing in an extra entropy flux are material constants. (3) The internal energy density per unit mass is independent of the total mass density (Joule).

  • For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications the dynamic behavior, that is, natural frequencies, nodal patterns should be informed. This study presents the experimental and FEM results for the free vibration of cantilevered, symmetrically and antisymmetrically laminated composite triangular plates. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of a number of CFRP, GFRP, composite-Aluminum and CFRP-GFRP hybrid composite plates are experimentally obtained. A method for the determination of the Young's modulus and test procedures are described. The natural frequencies are determined for a wide range of parameters: e.g., composite material constants, fiber angles and stacking sequences. Natural frequency and nondimensional frequency parameter results are compared with the finite element analysis and existing literatures. Agreement between experimental and calculated frequencies is excellent.

  • Design and microwave absorbing properties of ferrite plate are investigated for the application to the radiowave absorbers used in anechoic chamber. The required frequency-dependence of complex permeability is determined on the basis of wave-impedance-matching relationship. The plate thickness and matchingfrequency are determined from the complex permeability and dielectric constant, and then compared with the directly measured reflection loss. A systematic variation of material constants and their influence on the microwave absorbing properties are demonstrated.

  • The retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after cyclic overloading seems to be affected by strain hardening exponent. Namely, for the material with high values of n, the delay effect is found to be severe. We proposed a modified crack retardation equation which may apply the retardation of fatigue crack growth after a cyclic overloading, as (da/dN)'$_{cyc}$=($\mu$n+λ)B $\Delta$ $K^{q}$ /[(1- $R_{eff}$) $K_{cf}$$\Delta$K]. where, $R_{eff}$ is effective stress ratio [=( $K_{min}$-K, os)/( $K_{max}$$K_{res}$)] The constants $\mu$=-0.5 and λ=0.6, and the values are found to be identical for materials such as aluminum (A 1060), steel (SS 34), brass ( $B_{s}$ SIB) and stainless steel (SUS 304) used in this investigation. • As a method of measure the absorbing characteristics of microwave absorber, the various microwave measuring method can be used fundamentally. There is, however, a big problem in measuring errors, since the wavelength of microwave such as used for radar is very short. Therefore, this research aimed to design and fabricate a converting adaptor of $20mm^{\phi}$ coaxial tube from a Type-N connector to $20mm^{\phi}$ coaxial tube and to use it for evaluating absorption characteristics of microwave absorber. Furthermore, the measurements of absorbing characteristics and material constants have been performed and review, which were carried out by using the coaxial tube and by using rectangular waveguide, respective. As a result, the validity of the proposed measuring method has been confirmed.

  • In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.
