Performance and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Heat Pump System Using Refrigerant Mixtures (혼합냉매를 사용한 열펌프 시스템의 성능과 열전달 특성)

  • A heat pump system is constructed to evaluate its performance and heat transfer characteristics with mixtures of R22/R142b as working fluids. The heat transfer in the evaporator and the overall performance are measured and analyzed in terms of the compositions and relevant variables. Possibility of capacity modulation by changing composition is observed without degradation of heat transfer coefficients and coefficient of performance. The cooling capacity is varied continuously within 200 percent based on minimum capacity at constant compressor speed. For similar cooling capacity, COP is improved by mixing two refrigerants and shows maximum value at 60% mass fraction of R22. Average heat transfer coefficients of mixtures decrease in comparison with pure refrigerants at similar cooling capacity and mass flow rate. However, the overall heat transfer coefficients decrease moderately. A cycle simulation is performed in order to manifest the advantages of using refrigerant mixtures, considering experimentally observed heat transfer characteristics.

  • The concurrent injection of cosolvent and air, a cosolvent-air (CA) flood was recently suggested for a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation technology. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the DNAPL removal mechanisms of the CA flood and to quantify mass transfer rate coefficients during CA flooding. DNAPL removal mechanisms were examined by evaluating the effects of air flow rate and DNAPL solubility and visually documented at a pore-scale. Two serial processes, immiscible displacement and dissolution, were experimentally and visually documented during CA flooding. Mass transfer rate coefficients (K) were computed from the data showing PCE saturation versus time. Results showed that CA floods exhibited higher K values than cosolvent floods without concurrent air injection.   • The present study investigated the optimization of the absorption performance of the vertical absorber tube with falling film by considering heat and mass transfer simultaneously. Effects of film Reynolds number, geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and flow pattern on heat and mass transfer performances have been also investigated. Especially, effects of coolant flow rate and the flow pattern by geometric parameters has been observed for the total heat and mass transfer rates through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on both predicted values, the optimal coolant flow rate was predicted as 1.98 L/min. The maximum absorption rate of the spring inserted tube was increased by the maximum of $20.0\%$ than those for uniform film of bare tube. Average Sherwood numbers and Nusselt numbers were increased as Reynolds numbers increased under the dynamic and geometric conditions showing the maximum absorption performance.

Development of a Novel Bioreactor System for the Treatment of Gaseous Benzene

  • A novel, continuous bioreactor system combining a bubble column (absorption section) and a two-phase bioreactor (degradation section) has been designed to treat a gas stream containing benzene. The bubble column contained hexadecane as an absorbent for benzene, and was systemically chosen considering physical, biological, environmental, operational and economic factors. This solvent has infinite solubility for benzene and very low volatility. After absorbing benzene in the bubble column, the hexadecane served as the organic phase of the two-phase partitioning bioreactor, transferring benzene into the aqueous phase where it was degraded by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234. The hexadecane was then continuously recirculated back to the absorber section for the removal of additional benzene. All mass transfer and biodegradation characteristics in this system were investigated prior to operation of the integrated unit, and these included: the mass transfer rate of benzene in the absorption column, the mass transfer rate of benzene from the organic phase into the aqueous phase in the two-phase bioreactor, the stripping rate of benzene out of the two-phase bioreactor, etc. All of these parameters were incorporated into model equations, which were used to investigate the effects of operating conditions on the performance of the system. Several experiments were conducted to show the feasibility of this system. This process is believed to be very practical for the treatment of high concentrations of gaseous pollutants.

Effect of Inclined Jet on Heat/Mass Transfer for Impingement/Effusion Cooling System (경사제트에 따른 충돌제트/유출냉각에서 열/물질전달 특성)

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system with inclined jet. Jets with inclined angle of 60 are applied to impingement/effusion cooling. At the jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the experiments were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.0 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result indicates that the inclined jet causes the non-uniform and low heat/mass transfer compared to the vertical jet. At stagnation region, the peak position is shifted from the geometrical center of injection hole due to Coanda effect and its level is higher than that of vertical jet due to increase in turbulence intensity by steep velocity gradient near the stagnation region. Further, the secondary peak region disappears because the interaction between adjacent wall jets weakens. When the initial crossflow occurs, the distorted heat/mass transfer pattern appears. As the blowing ratio (crossflow rate) increases, the heat/mass transfer distributions become similar to those of the vertical jet. This is because the effect of crossflow is dominant compared to that of inclined jet under high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$. At low blowing ratio $(M{\leq}0.5)$, averaged Sh value is 10% lower than that of vertical jet, whereas its value at high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$ is similar to that of vertical jet.

  • The objective of this study is to predict the heat-transfer performance of a spirally coiled circular fin-tube evaporator in which either R134a or R600a was used; this heat-transfer performance was predicted by varying the mass flow rate, inlet air temperature, air flow rate, and tube thickness. Mean deviation for the analytical model from the measured data was ${\pm}8.3%$. Simulation results revealed that at a given mass flow rate, the heat-transfer rate of the evaporator using R600a was higher than that usingR134a because the enthalpy of the former is higher than that of the latter at the given conditions. The heat-transfer rate of both refrigerants increased with an increase in the air flow rate and inlet air temperature but decreased with an increase in the tube thickness.

  • One-dimensional oxygen transport relation is indispensable to study the oxygen distribution in the LBE-cooled system with an oxygen control device. In this paper, a numerical research is carried out to study the oxygen transport characteristics in a gas-phase oxygen control device, including the static case and dynamic case. The model of static oxygen control is based on the two-phase VOF model and the results agree well with the theoretical expectation. The model of dynamic oxygen control is simplified and the gas-liquid interface is treated as a free surface boundary with a constant oxygen concentration. The influences of the inlet and interface oxygen concentration, mass flow rate, temperature, and the inlet pipe location on the mass transfer characteristics are discussed. Based on the results, an oxygen mass transport relation considering the temperature dependence and velocity dependence separately is obtained. The relation can be used in a one-dimensional system analysis code to predict the oxygen provided by the oxygen control device, which is an important part of the integral oxygen mass transfer models.

  • In this study, experimental studies were performed the combustion characteristics of end- burning hybrid propulsion system. PMMA, PE were used as fuel and gas oxygen as oxidizer. The regression rate depend on oxidizer flow rate also on thermodynamic properties of fuel. as result, empirical formula for regression rate was deduces with oxidizer flow rate and mass transfer coefficient B number.

  • The variation of regression rate of single port hybrid rocket was studied with various fuel. As fuel, PE, PMMA were used and gas oxygen as oxidizer. The regression rate depends on but flow rates of oxidizer also thermodynamic properties of fuel. In this study, the empirical relation for regression rate of solid fuel were found with mass transfer coefficient(B number) and oxidizer flow rate.

Characterization of Expanded Tobacco Lamina Tissues by Freeze Drying (냉동건조에 의한 잎담배 팽화특성)

  • The freeze drying rate was investigated under various conditions such as pressure and moisture contents in order to establish the optimum condition for expansion of the culled flue cured tobacco lamina. The optimal pressure in the chamber to maintain the heat and mass transfer was about 0.8torr, When the moisture contents of sample was 50-60%, expanding rate was the optimum condition and the rate was 67-76%. As the thickness of the sample layers was increased, drying-rate was decreased conversely and this result seemed to be due to decline of heat and mass transfer coefficients. Differences with the position of its stalk were also observed in drying rate, and low stalk position leaves of 5 and 3 was the fastest. Key words : freeze drying, Popping, expansion tobacco.
