The energetic steam explosion caused by contact between the high temperature molten core and water is one of the phenomena that may threaten the integrity of the containment vessel during severe accidents of light water reactors (LWRs). We examined the dependence of steam explosion loads in a typical reactor cavity geometry on selected model parameters and initial/boundary conditions by using a steam explosion simulation code, JASMINE, developed at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Among the parameters, we put an emphasis on the water pool depth that has significance in terms of accident mitigation strategies including cavity flooding. The results showed a strong correlation between the load and the premixed mass, defined as the mass of the molten material in low void zones (void fraction < 0.75). The jet diameter and velocity that comprise the flow rate were the primary factors to determine the premixed mass and the load. The water pool depth also showed a significant impact. The energy conversion ratio based on the enthalpy in the premixed mass was in a narrow range ~4%. Based on this observation, we proposed a simplified method for evaluation of the steam explosion load. The results showed fair agreement with JASMINE.
An inerter is a passive mechanical element whose inertance can be thousands of times its own physical mass. This paper discusses the application of an inerter-based passive control system, termed rotational inertial double-tuned mass damper (RIDTMD), to mitigate human-induced floor vibrations. First, the acceleration frequency response function of the floor with an RIDTMD is first derived. It is then employed to determine the optimal design parameters of the RIDTMD using the extended fixed-points technique. Based on a theoretical analysis, design-oriented empirical functions are proposed for the RIDTMD optimal parameters, whose performance for floor vibration control is evaluated by numerical examples, in which three typical human-induced load types are considered: walking, jumping, and bouncing. The results indicate that the applicability and effectiveness of the RIDTMD for human-induced floor vibration control are robust for various load types, load frequencies, and floor natural frequencies. For the same mass ratio, the RIDTMD is better than the TMD in reducing the floor vibration amplitude and improving the effective frequency suppression bandwidth, and for the same vibration suppression effect, the mass of the RIDTMD is much lighter than that of the TMD.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.
A tunnel that uses the RMR method or the Q-system is called a 'modem tunnel' because the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is not employed, even though shotcrete and rock bolts are used as support. It is known that the modem tunnel, which is supported by shotcrete, is basically different from the conventional tunnel, which is supported by steel ribs. In order to preserve the load-carrying capacity of the rock mass, loosening and excessive rock deformations must be minimized. Although it is known that this can be achieved by applying shotcrete in the case of the modem tunnel, this has not been clearly demonstrated. In order to inspect the distinctions between the conventional tunnel and the modern tunnel, their support characteristics and the rock loads of the rock mass classifications are compared. Terzaghi's rock load classification was used as the conventional tunnel's representative rock mass classification. The RMR method and the Q-system were adopted as the modem tunnel's representative rock mass classification. The study's results show that the load-carrying capacity of shotcrete, when used as the main support in the modern tunnel, is greater than the load-capacity of the steel ribs used in the conventional tunnel. Because it has been verified that the rock loads of their rock mass classifications are not different, then, according to the rock mass classifications, the load-carrying capacity of the rock mass of the modern tunnel, which uses shotcrete, is not greater than that of the conventional tunnel.
The tribological role of mass transfer layer was studied with silver coatings under various ranges of load and sliding speed. Silver coating was performed with a functionally gradient coating method. Tests were per-formed in dry sliding conditions, using a ball-on-disk contact configuration, at the load of 0.0196-17.64 N and the sliding speed of 20-1,000 mm/s in ambient air. Optical microscope and EPMA analyses showed that contact surfaces were covered with the mass transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles depending upon the contact conditions, and they greatly influenced the tribological characteristics of the surfaces. However, the formation of mass transfer layer was suppressed as the sliding speed increased, and above a critical sliding speed, no mass transfer layer was able to form. For building up a general framework of triboiogical behavior of the coated silver films, all test data were summarized on a map whose axes are contact pressure and sliding speed.

The Timoshenko beam theories are used to model the rotating shaft. The nondimensional equations of motion for the rotating shaft subjected to moving mass and compressive axial forces are derived by using Hamilton's principle. Influence of system parameters such as the speed ratio. the mass ratio and the Rayleigh coefficient is discussed on the response of the moving system. The effects of compressive axial forces are also included in the analysis. The results are presented and compared with the available solutions of a rotating shaft subject to a moving mass and a moving load.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of stepped cantilever columns with a tip mass of rotatory inertia and a translational spring at one end. The column model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of columns with stepwise variable cross-section and subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. The frequency and critical divergence/flutter load for the stepped column with a single step are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the segmental length parameter, the section ratio, the subtangential parameter, the mass, the moment of inertia of the mass, and the spring parameter.

Recently, for the purpose of improving the isolation performance of impact noise, many resilient materials have been installed in a residential building. As one of the reduction method for improving the performance of light-weight impact noise, this study is focused on the load condition of floating layer over resilient material. We studied the correlation between the mass or load of the floating layer and the reduction of light-weight impact noise by experiments in reverberation chamber for testing the impact noise. The results show that the reduction of impact noise is improved by increasing the mass per unit area of floating layer until about $140kg/m^2$. But the reduction is not obvious by adding extra mass on the floating layer.

This paper presents an speed reference trajectory planning methods for vibration suppression in a t-mass resonant system which has a flexible coupling between a load and a driving motor. Due to this flexibility, the system often suffers vibration especially when the motor is controlled for higher speed command. The steady state conditions are utilized to derive desired load speed trajectory which does not cause the torsional vibration. And the desired motor speed trajectory is synthesized base on the relation between load and motor speed. The simulation and experiment result suggest that the proposed method effectively suppress the vibration.
