  • In order to obtain the principal design data for developing the Autonomous Robot Vehicle(ARV), Sensitivity analysis on the trajectory error and friction force with respect to the dynamic parameters is performed. In the straight motion, the trajectory error has been proved to be much affected by the mass variance of the ARV while the lateral friction force is much affected by the location of the mass center. In the curved motion, the effect of mass and moment of inertia is considered importantly. In addition, the lateral offset gives more effect than the geometric dimension of the ARV on the trajectory errors and friction force.

  • This paper provides a description of the combustion model to obtain an accurate dynamic engine phenomena that satisfies real-time simulation for model-based engine control. The combustion chamber is modeled as a storage device for mass and energy. The combustion process is modeled in terms of a two-zone model for the burned and unburned gas fractions. The mass fraction burnt is modeled in terms of a Wiebe function. The instantaneous net engine torque is calculated from the engine speed and the instantaneous piston work. The modeling accuracy has been tested with a cylinder pressure data on a test bench and also the ability of real-time simulation has been checked. The results show that combustion model yields sufficiently good performance for the model-based control logic design. However the influence factors effected on model accuracy are some room for improvement.

  • The main objective of this paper is to investigate characteristic of steam reformer at various geometries and operating conditions. In this paper, the steam reforming is studied by a numerical method and three dimensional simulations were used for effective analytical study. User - Defined Function (UDF) was used to simultaneously calculate reforming and combustion reaction. And the numerical model is validated with experimental results at the same operating conditions. In order to understand the relationship between operating conditions such as gas hourly space velocity(GHSV), mass flow rate of combustor inlet, various numerical investigations are carries out for various geometries. Numerical results show that cylindrical geometry is more effective than rectangular geometry for heat transfer to reactors and reforming efficiency. As mass flow rate of combustor inlet increase, reaction occurs more faster and temperature increase with each geometry. On the other hand, reaction and hydrogen conversion decrease as mass flow rate of reactor decreases.

  • Data mining, which is attracting public attention, is a process of drawing out knowledge from a large mass of data. The key technique in data mining is the ability to maximize the similarity in a group and minimize the similarity between groups. Since grouping in data mining deals with a large mass of data, it lessens the amount of time spent with the source data, and grouping techniques that shrink the quantity of the data form to which the algorithm is subjected are actively used. The current grouping algorithm is highly sensitive to static and reacts to local minima. The number of groups has to be stated depending on the initialization value. In this paper we propose a gene algorithm that automatically decides on the number of grouping algorithms. We will try to find the optimal group of the fittest function, and finally apply it to a data mining problem that deals with a large mass of data.

  • Small capacity gas absorption systems for cooling and heating have been favorably considered to reduce the seasonal imbalance of electrical loads and LNG consumption recently. A multifunctional plate-fin heat exchanger was adopted as an absorber and the performance was tested and analyzed to reduce the size and weight of the absorption heat pump. The test was performed using breadboard type ammonia absorption machine. The performance was compared with the plate type absorber and there was little difference in heat and mass transfer characteristics. The heat and mass transfer performance was a function of poor solution and vapor flow rates and the mass transfer was dependent on vapor flow rate more than heat transfer.

  • The purpose of the present research was to investigate (I) the acquisition of character constancy of self and others as a function of age; (2) the pattern of acquisition of character constancy, and (3) the relationships between character constancy and conservation of number and mass. The subjects of this study were 160 children, 20 boys and 20 girls at each grade level, kindergarter through grade 3. The Character Constancy Tasks devised bi Rotenberg (1982) and conservation task of number and mass were administered to each child. Chi square, Guttman Scale analysis and Pearson's Correlation were used for the statistical analysis of data. The findings showed that there was increase with age in character constancy of others and of sell in that there was increase with age in children's belief that the characteristics of another person are stable across time and consistent despite changes in a person's appearance. Character constancy of others and of self were acquired in the developmental stages of identity, stability, and consistency. Character constancy of others and self correlated with the conservation of number and mass.

  • Litterfall dynamics in forests are assessed by estimating biomass production and decomposition. However, there have been few studies on how litter dynamics impact the health and management of ecosystems. Here, a new approach to measure and assess ecosystem function is presented based on conventional methods using littertraps, litterbags, and the mass on the forest floor. To assess the status of litter dynamics, the decay rate (k) was estimated from a litterbag experiment, and removal rates ($k_i$) were determined from mass balance on the forest floor at 21 sites on three mountains in South Korea. The $k_3$ (organic mass ratio of $O_i$ and $O_e+O_a$ + A horizons in November) values in an equilibrium state in South Korea were within the range of $k{\pm}0.174$ when considering the annual variation of litterfall production. This study also suggests that sampling sites for these types of studies should be in the middle, not at the ends, of steady slopes on the forest floor.

  • This work deals with the design optimization of tuned mass damper (TMD) devices used for mitigating vibrations in high-rise towers subjected to seismic accelerations. A stochastic approach is developed and the excitation is represented by a stationary filtered stochastic process. The effectiveness of the vibration control strategy is evaluated by expressing the objective function as the reduction factor of the structural response in terms of displacement and absolute acceleration. The mechanical characteristics of the tuned mass damper represent the design variables. Analyses of sensitivities are carried out by varying the input and structural parameters in order to assess the efficiency of the TMD strategy. Variations between two different criteria are also evaluated.

  • We present an improved transfer matrix algorithm which can be used in solving general n-band effective-mass $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger$ equation for quantum well structures with arbitrary shaped potential profiles(where n specifies the number of bands explicitly included in the effective-mass equation). In the proposed algorithm, specific formulas are presented for the three-band (the conduction band and the two heavy- and light-hole bands) and two-band (the heavy- and light-hole bands) effective-mass eigensystems. Advantages of the present method can be taken in its simple and unified treatment for general $n{\times}n$ matrix envelope-function equations, which requires relatively smaller computation efforts as compared with existing methods of similar kind. As an illustration of application of the method, numerical computations are performed for a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well using both the two-band and three-band formulas. The results are compared with those obtained by the conventional variational procedure to assess the validity of the method.
