  • In general, it may be advantageous to measure the pressure pulsation near a valve to detect a valve defect in a linear compressor. However, the acceleration signals are more advantageous for rapid classification in a mass-production line. This paper deals with the performance improvement of fault classification using only the compressor-shell acceleration signal based on the relation between the refrigerant pressure pulsation and the shell acceleration of the compressor. A transfer function was estimated experimentally to take into account the signal noise ratio between the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant in the suction pipe and the shell acceleration. The shell acceleration signal of the compressor was modified using this transfer function to improve the defect classification performance. The defect classification of the modified signal was evaluated in the acceleration signal in the frequency domain using Fisher's discriminant ratio (FDR). The defect classification method was validated by experimental data. By using the method presented, the classification of valve defects can be performed rapidly and efficiently during mass production.

  • UBV I CCD photometry of NGC 2353 is performed as a part of the "Sejong Open cluster Survey" (SOS). Using photometric membership criteria we select probable members of the cluster. We derive the reddening and distance to the cluster, i.e., E(B - V ) = 0.10 ${\pm}$ 0.02 mag and 1.17 ${\pm}$ 0.04 kpc, respectively. We find that the projected distribution of the probable members on the sky is elliptical in shape rather than circular. The age of the cluster is estimated to be log(age)=8.1 ${\pm}$ 0.1 in years, older than what was found in previous studies. The minimum value of binary fraction is estimated to be about 48 ${\pm}$ 5 percent from a Gaussian function fit to the distribution of the distance moduli of the photometric members. Finally, we also obtain the luminosity function and the initial mass function (IMF) of the probable cluster members. The slope of the IMF is ${\Gamma}=-1.3{\pm}0.2$.

  • Drosophila melanogaster (fruits fly) is a representative model system widely used in biological studies because its brain function and basic cellular processes are similar to human beings. The whole head of the fly is often used to obtain the key function in brain-related diseases like degenerative brain diseases; however the biomolecular distribution of the head may be slightly different from that of a brain. Herein, lipid profiles of the head and dissected brain samples of Drosophila were studied using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). According to the sample types, the detection of phospholipid ions was suppressed by triacylglycerol (TAG), or the specific phospholipid signals that are absent in the mass spectrum were measured. The lipid distribution was found to be different in the wild-type and the microRNA-14 deficiency model ($miR-14{\Delta}^1$) with abnormal lipid metabolism. A few phospholipids were also profiled by comparison of the head and the brain in two fly model systems. The mass spectra showed that the phospholipid distributions in the $miR-14{\Delta}^1$ model and the wild-type were different, and principal component analysis revealed a correlation between some phospholipids (phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), and phosphatidylserine (PS)) in $miR-14{\Delta}^1$. The overall results suggested that brain-related lipids should be profiled using fly samples after dissection for more accurate analysis.

  • We report a case of intramuscular hemangioma in the subscapularis muscle and the resulting impairment of shoulder function in an adult patient. A nineteen-year-old female complained of shoulder pain and the development of a mass in the absence of previous trauma. Physical examinations, including lift-off and belly-press tests, showed abnormality. X-ray showed multiple calcifications in the front of the scapula. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a soft-tissue mass occupying almost the entire intramuscular portion of the subscapularis muscle. An arthroscopic examination excluded the possibility of a joint invasion, after which the entire mass was successfully removed by open excision. The displacement of the subscapularis by the mass was relieved after the surgery. Pathological diagnosis of the tissue confirmed a cavernous hemangioma. Both shoulder pain and function was improved after operation. There was no evidence of recurrence even at the 2-year follow-up. Rare forms of hemangioma adjacent to the shoulder joint could be successfully managed with surgical excision. Differential diagnosis, such as synovial chondromatosis, pigmented villo-nodular synovitis, and malignant sarcoma, should also be considered.

  • Balance shaft module contributes to reduce the engine-born vibration by compensating it from a unbalance mass with opposite phase but practically, this device has some problems during the operation in a high speed owing to the considerable amount of unbalance mass that leads to the large quantity of bending deformation as well as torque fluctuation at the balance shaft. To tackle two main problems, the design strategy on balance shaft is suggested by addressing the optimal location of unbalance mass and supporting hearing based on the formulation of objective function that minimizes critical issues, both bending deformation as well as torque fluctuation. The boundary condition of balance shaft assumes to be free such that any external force or contact component is not taken into consideration in this study.

  • We analyze a newly discovered galaxy-galaxy scale gravitational lens system, FLS 1718+59 in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) field. A background galaxy (z = 0.245) is severely distorted by a foreground galaxy (z = 0.08), via gravitational lensing. We analyze this system by several methods, including surface brightness fitting (Galfit and Ellipse), gravitational lens modeling (gravlens), and spectral energy distribution fitting (Magphys). From Galfit and Ellipse we measure properties of the lens galaxy, such as the effective radius and the average surface brightness inside it, the ellipticity, and the position angle. gravlens gives us the total mass inside the Einstein radius ($R_{Ein}$), and Magphys provides us an estimate of the stellar mass inside $R_{Ein}$. By comparing these obtained parameters, we confirm that the lens galaxy is an elliptical galaxy on the Fundamental Plane, and calculate the stellar mass function inside $R_{Ein}$, and discuss the implications of the results regarding the initial mass function.

  • This study deals with the dynamic response of a rotor in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) caused by the unbalance force such as the unbalanced mass and electromagnetic force. The method to analyze the mechanical response of the rotor supported on the bearing is based on an extension of the 3-dimensional Transfer Matrix Method(TMM) coupled with the electromagnetic force calculated by Maxwell stress tensor. The displacement of the rotor as a function of frequency according to the position of the unbalanced mass is evaluated from the frequency response function (FRF). The rotor behaviour with the electromagnetic force is compared with that without the electromagnetic force. In addition, the resonance speeds and the vibration modes are analyzed and demonstrated in this paper. These results are useful in designing the mechanical rotor and in balancing properly the rotor to reduce vibration and noise.
