  • In this paper, the displacement response to seismic loads was analyzed after installing TMD in spatial structures and high-rise buildings. In the case of a spatial structures, since it exhibits complex dynamic behavior under the influence of various vibration modes, it is not possible to effectively control the seismic response by installing only one TMD, unlike ordinary structures. Therefore, after installing eight TMDs in the structure, the correlation between displacement response and mass ratio was examined while changing the mass. The TMD must be designed to have the same frequency as the structure frequency so that the maximum response reduction effect can be exhibited. It can be confirmed that the most important variable is to select the optimal TMD mass in order to install the TMD on the structure and secure excellent control performance against the earthquake load. As a result of analyzing the TMD mass ratio, in the case of high-rise buildings, a mass ratio of 0.4% to 0.6% is preferable. In spatial structures, it is desirable to select a mass ratio of 0.1% to 0.2%. Because this study is based on the theoretical study based on numerical analysis, in order to design a TMD for a real structure, it is necessary to select within a range that does not affect the safety of the structure.

  • In order to investigate the effects of frequent eating-out and breakfast skipping of working men on body mass index and nutrients intake status, working male adults aged 20 or over were selected (n = 1883) from the data of 2001 Korea national health and nutrition survey. The subjects were divided into 4 groups according to the eating-out frequency(high: once or more daily, low: less than once daily) and breakfast eating or not. Four groups were high eating-out with breakfast eating (n = 609), high eating-out with breakfast skipping (n = 192), low eating-out with breakfast eating (n = 877), and low eating-out with breakfast skipping (n = 205). High eating-out group showed higher body mass index (BMI) than low eating-out group, but the difference of BMI was disappeared when adjusted with age, residence region and family income. However high eating-out group in case of breakfast eating, compared with the low eating-out, showed higher intakes or densities of energy, fat, fat-energy% and higher ratio of energy-fat overintake, and also showed higher mean nutritional adequacy ratio and lower ratio of nutrients intake deficiency. Calcium, iron, vitamin A and C intakes were not affected by eating-out frequency, but were lowered by breakfast skipping. Breakfast skipping also decreased intake frequency of unprocessed cereals and increased those of ramyon and carbonated and alcoholic beverages. From the results frequent eating-out with breakfast eating caused increased intakes of energy and fat, but did not cause BMI increase. Breakfast skipping, but not eating-out, had negative influences on mineral and vitamin intakes. Accordingly good eating-out as well as breakfast eating should be exceedingly emphasized at nutrition education for the working males.

  • In this study, in order to. investigate the effectiveness af tuned liquid damper (TLD) for the seismic performance enhancement af the existing reinforced concrete (RC) apartment structure which is nat seismically designed, shaking table test was conducted for the small scale five stary RC structure with TLD. TLD model was constructed to. have the frequency tuned to. the first modal frequency af the structure, $2\%$ mass ratio. af the first modal mass, and 0.08 liquid depth ratio. White noise with $0.2\~5Hz$ frequency bandwidth tests were performed using the shaking table at Korea Institute af Machinery and Materials, and the displacement and absolute acceleration af each floor were measured. Test results indicate that mare than $30\%$ seismic responses reduction can be achieved using TLD for RC structure under white noise.

  • Brittle fracture of structures excited by earthquakes can be prevented by adding a tuned mass damper (TMD). This TMD must be optimum and suitable to the physical conditions of the structure. Compressive strength of concrete is an important factor for brittle fracture. The application of a TMD to structures with low compressive strength of concrete may not be possible if the weight of the TMD is too much. A heavy TMD is dangerous for these structures because of insufficient axial force capacity of structure. For the preventing brittle fracture, the damping ratio of the TMD must be sufficient to reduce maximum shear forces below the values proposed in design regulations. Using the formulas for frequency and damping ratio related to a preselected mass, this objective can be only achieved by increasing the mass of the TMD. By using a metaheuristic method, the optimum parameters can be searched in a specific limit. In this study, Harmony Search (HS) is employed to find optimum TMD parameters for preventing brittle fracture by reducing shear force in additional to other time and frequency responses. The proposed method is feasible for the retrofit of weak structures with insufficient compressive strength of concrete.

  • This paper describes frequency response of two-mass system for gyroscope applications. The two-mass system of the proposed device is adapted to the sensing part of the gyroscope in this research. Two-mass system has two resonant peaks and wide flat region between two resonant peaks. The resonant frequency of driving part is in this flat region. Therefore, frequency tuning is not necessary for mode matching. In the proposed device, resonant frequency is designed as 7183 Hz in driving part. Mass ratio of two masses in sensing part is 0.1 and device size is 6 mm $\times$ 6 mm. The device is fabricated by SiOG process. The fabricated spring width is increased from $4{\mu}m$ to $4.5{\sim}4.7{\mu}m$, and the measured resonant frequency is 8392 Hz in driving mode. We operated the sensing part using parallel plate of proof mass to verify the sensing part. It is confirmed the device has a wide fiat region in frequency response curve and the resonant frequency of the driving part is in the wide flat region of sensing mode.

  • The vibration characteristics of fully and partially embedded piles with flexibly supported end carrying an eccentric tip mass are investigated. The pile model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory and the soil is idealized as a Winkler model for mathematical simplicity. The governing differential equations for the free vibrations of such members are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest three natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the rotational spring parameter, the relative stiffness, the embedded ratio, the mass ratio, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, and the tip mass eccentricity.

  • Vibration absorber is used to protect the primary system from steady-state harmonic disturbance. By attaching the absorber to the primary system which is modeled as a SDOF system, the new system becomes two DOF system. Depending on the driving frequency on the original system, the absorber needs to be carefully tuned, that is, to choose adequate value of the absorber mass and stiffness, so that the motion of the original mass is a minimum. This paper presents the effects of resonance frequency ratio and of vibration absorber with oil damper and coil spring for linear damped primary systems.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on the response control performance of tuned liquid damper(TLD). Steel frame building model is used for the experiments. Shaking table is controled by velocity consol. Experimental variables are mass ratios(${\mu}=mass$ of TLD/mass of structure), shape ratio(depth of water/ length of TLD), number of nets(N) and tuned frequency ratio($f_l/f_s$). Results show that the greater the mass ratio is, the better the control performance is. So, it can be concluded that TLD is able to be used as a device of vibration control in the remodeling of existing buildings that are not designed to resist earthquake

  • For controlling the vibration of specific building structure with large span, a practical method for the design of MTMD was developed according to the characteristics of structures subjected to wind loads. Based on the model of analyzing wind-induced response of large-span structure with MTMD, the optimization method of multiple tuned mass dampers for large-span roof structures subjected to wind loads was established, in which the applicable requirements for strength and fatigue life of TMD spring were considered. According to the method, the controlled modes and placements of TMDs in MTMD were determined through the quantitative analysis on modal contribution to the wind-induced dynamic response of structure. To explore the characteristics of MTMD, the parametric analysis on the effects of mass ratio, damping ratio, central tuning frequency ratio and frequency range of MTMD, was performed in the study. Then the parameters of MTMD were optimized through genetic algorithm and the optimized MTMD showed good dynamic characteristics. The robustness of the optimized MTMD was also investigated.
