  • Two perforated plates are used to investigate local heat/mass transfer characteristics in an impingement/effusion cooling system. A naphthalene sublimation method is conducted to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. Two plates are placed in parallel position with gap distances of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times of effusion hole diameter. The effects of hole arrangements of the plates are studied fur staggered, square, and hexagonal arrays. The experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the effusion hole diameter. The results show that the smaller hole size in the staggered array has the higher transfer coefficients on the stagnation region due to the formation of higher momentum flows through the impingement holes. In the square array, heat/mass transfer on the target plate is more uniform as the number of impingement holes increases. High and uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained for the hexagonal array.

  • In this paper, an investigation on high-Schmidt number (Sc=1670) mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder is carried out by Direct Numerical Simulation. The concentration field is computed for three different values of low Reynolds number, namely 161, 348 and 623 based on the cylinder radius and friction velocity. Statistical study reveals that the thickness of Nernst diffusive layer is very small compared with that of viscous sub-layer in the case of high Sc mass transfer. Strong correlation of concentration field with streamwise and vertical velocity components is observed. However, that is not the case with the spanwise velocity component. Instantaneous concentration visualization reveals that the length scale of concentration fluctuation typically decreases as Reynolds number increases. Statistical correlation between Sherwood number and Reynolds number is consistent with other experiments currently available.

  • The optimal strategy for semelparous females may involve adjustments in the relative investment in two fitness components, the number of offspring and the post-hatching investment per capita. To determine the pattern of maternal resource allocation to offspring in the matriphagous spider, Amaurobius ferox (Amaurobiidae), I investigated the relationship between maternal body-mass and the number of offspring, and quantified the transfer of maternal body-mass to the offspring via different forms of maternal provisioning (trophic egg-laying and matriphagy). There was a positive relationship between female body-mass and the number of offspring. However, Amaurobius mothers did not produce more trophic eggs when they had larger broods. Rather, spiderlings in larger A. ferox broods consumed larger quantities of maternal body-mass via matriphagy. Mothers transferred $28.8{\pm}6.5%$ of their body-mass to the spiderlings via trophic egg-laying, and an estimated $39.0{\pm}12.5%$ of their body-mass was transferred to the spiderlings via matriphagy.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to enhance the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system when the initial crossflow was formed. For the improvement of heat transfer, the circular guide is installed on the injection hole. At the fixed jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the measurements were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result presents that the circular guide protects the injected jet from the initial crossflow, increasing the heat/mass transfer. The heat transfer of stagnation region is hardly changed regardless of the blowing ratio. The secondary peak is obviously formed by flow transition to turbulent flow. At high blowing ratio of 1.5, the circular guide produces $26{\sim}30%$ augmentation on the averaged heat/mass transfer while the case without circular guide leads to the low and non-uniform heat/mass transfer. With the increased heat/mass transfer, the installation of circular guide is accompanied by the increase of pressure loss in the channel. However, the pressure drop caused by the circular guide is lower than that for other cooling technique with the circular pin fin.

  • The numerical solutions of unsteady hydromagnetic natural convection Couette flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid between the two vertical parallel plates in the presence of thermal radiation, thermal diffusion and diffusion thermo are obtained here. The fundamental dimensionless governing coupled linear partial differential equations for impulsive movement and uniformly accelerated movement of the plate were solved by an efficient Finite Element Method. Computations were performed for a wide range of the governing flow parameters, viz., Thermal diffusion (Soret) and Diffusion thermo (Dufour) parameters, Magnetic field parameter, Prandtl number, Thermal radiation and Schmidt number. The effects of these flow parameters on the velocity (u), temperature (${\theta}$) and Concentration (${\phi}$) are shown graphically. Also the effects of these pertinent parameters on the skin-friction, the rate of heat and mass transfer are obtained and discussed numerically through tabular forms. These are in good agreement with earlier reported studies. Analysis indicates that the fluid velocity is an increasing function of Grashof numbers for heat and mass transfer, Soret and Dufour numbers whereas the Magnetic parameter, Thermal radiation parameter, Prandtl number and Schmidt number lead to reduction of the velocity profiles. Also, it is noticed that the rate of heat transfer coefficient and temperature profiles increase with decrease in the thermal radiation parameter and Prandtl number, whereas the reverse effect is observed with increase of Dufour number. Further, the concentration profiles increase with increase in the Soret number whereas reverse effect is seen by increasing the values of the Schmidt number.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate convective heat/mass transfer inside the cooling passage with bleed holes. The rotating square channel has 40.0 mm hydraulic diameter and the bleed holes on the leading surface of the channel. The hole diameter of bleed hole is 4.5 mm and its spacing (P/d=4.9) is about five times of hole diameter. Mass flow rate through bleed holes is 10% of the main flow rate and rotation number is changed form 0.0 to 0.4. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The cooling performance is influenced by mass flow rate through bleed holes and Coriolis force of rotating channel for fixed reynolds number. The heat transfer is enhanced around holes on the leading surface because of trapping flow by bleeding. However heat transfer on the leading surface is decreased due to Coriolis force.

  • This study was concerned with the enhancement of mass transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical inner tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, groove tube, corrugate tube and inserted spring tubes. The additive concentration of normal octyl alcohol as a surfactant is about 0.08mass%. The Sherwood number was measured as a function of film Reynolds number 20~200. The experimental results were compared with those which use no surfactant. The enhancement of mass transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is proved for each testing tube Especially, it is clarified that the tube with the spring has the highest enhancement effect. A correlation of the experimental mass transfer data for the bare, groove, corrugate and insert spring tubes results expressed as the form of Sh=cㆍ Re$_{f}$ $^{n}$ .

  • Direct Numerical Simulation was carried out to predict mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating stepped cylinder. This investigation is a follow-up study of DNS of turbulent flow in Nesic et al. [Corrosion, Vol. 56, No. 10, pp. 1005 - 1014] The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to design a simple device which can generate flows of high turbulence intensity at low cost for corrosion researchers. Two cases were considered; Sc=1 and 10 both at Re=335. Here, Sc and Re stand for Schmidt number and Reynolds number, respectively, based on the step height and the surface speed of the cylinder upstream of the step. Main focus was placed on the correlation between turbulence and mass transfer. The spatio-temporal evolution of concentration field is discussed. The numerical results are qualitatively compared with those of the experiment conducted with a similar flow configuration.

  • The effect of tube diameter on heat and mass transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by both of numerical and experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.70mm and 9.52mm. In numerical study a model of vapor pressure drop inside tube absorber based on a commercial 20RT absorption chiller/heater was performed. The effect of tube diameter, longitudinal pitch, vapor Reynolds number, longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio on vapor pressure drop across the heat exchanger tube banks inside absorber have been investigated and found that vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, longitudinal pitch increases, vapor Reynolds number decreases and longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases. In experimental study, a system includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The experimental results shown that the overall heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient. Nusselt number and Sherwood number increase as solution flow rate increases. In both of study cases, the heat and mass transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat and mass transfer performance.
