  • Seismic ground response analysis is one of the most important issues in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Conventional seismic site response and free field analysis of layered soils does not consider the effect of surcharge mass which may be present on the top layer. Surcharge mass may develop extra inertial force to the soil and, hence, significantly affect on the results of seismic ground response analysis. Methods of analysis of ground response may also be categorized into time domain and frequency domain concepts. Simplicity in developing analytical relations and accuracy in considering soil dynamic properties dependency to loading frequency are benefits of frequency domain analysis. In this part of the paper, seismic ground response is analyzed using transfer function method for soil layers considering surcharge mass on the top layer. Equation of motion, wave equation, is solved using amended boundary conditions which effectively take the impact of surcharge mass into account. A computer program is developed by MATLAB software based on the solution method developed for wave equation. Layered soils subjected to earthquake loading were numerically studied and solved especially by the computer program developed in this research. Results obtained were compared with those given by DEEP SOIL computer program. Such comparison showed the accuracy of the program developed in this study. Also in this part, the effects of geometrical and mechanical properties of soil layers and especially the impact of surcharge mass on transfer function are investigated using the current approach and the program developed. The efficiency and accuracy of the method developed here is shown through some worked examples and through comparison of the results obtained here with those given by other approaches. Discussions on the results obtained are presented throughout in this part.

  • The formation mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies remains an open fundamental question. Black holes (BHs) are believed to grow by accretion of gas or by merging with other BHs. Motivated by the observation of luminous quasar around redshift z ~ 7 with SMBH mass up to 109 solar mass, we follow the growth of the early assembly of SMBHs that trace the hierarchical evolution of dark matter halos derived from large cosmological simulations. The initial masses of BH seeds in the first halos were set up according to the BH mass - halo mass relation. We assume that mergers of host galaxies cause loss of angular momentum of gas and trigger episodes of gas accretion onto BHs for available durations and at the end of each episode of accretion, BHs merge immediately. We trace the evolution of BH masses for various scenarios for central gas properties in halos. We estimate the BH to halo mass ratio and BH mass function at each redshift.

  • We aim to investigate inflow history of matters that fall into the satellite systems around a dwarf galaxy in Lambda-Cold Dark Matter model. Each satellite system has unique properties because all satellite systems have different mass inflow history by environments and/or the events such as cosmic reionization and merging with other halos. To trace mass inflow history of the satellite systems, we perform three different cosmological zoom simulations whose galaxy mass is ${\sim}10^{10}M_{sun}$. Each initial zoom simulation covers a cubic box of $1Mpc/h^3$ with 17 million particles. Particle mass for dark matter (DM) and gas components is $M_{DM}=4.1{\times}10^3M_{sun}$ and $M_{gas}=7.9{\times}10^2M_{sun}$, respectively. Thus, each satellite system is resolved with more than hundreds - thousands of particles. We analyze the influence of the gravitational interaction with host galaxy, baryonic matter inflow by various cooling mechanisms, and merging events with other halos on the mass inflow history of satellite systems.

  • Background: Shielding properties of compound or mixture is presented in terms of mass attenuation coefficients using Monte Carlo simulation. Mass attenuation coefficients of cement, gypsum and the mixture of gypsum and $PbCO_3$ has been investigated using monte carlo MCNPX. Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficients of cement, gypsum and the mixture of gypsum and $PbCO_3$ were calculated for photon energies 365.5, 661.6, 1,173.2, and 1,332.5 keV energies. Results and Discussion: The simulated values of mass attenuation coefficients were compared avaialable experimental results, theoretical values by XCOM and found good comparability of the results. Conclusion: Standard simulation geometry used in the present investigation would be very useful for various types of sample for shielding and dosimetry applications.

  • There are complicated and big shear zone which is about several tens meter in the middle of the cutting slope in this study area. And slope stability analysis is very hard because many fault zones are gathered in the shear zone. This study furnish imformations of scrutinized geological survey, numerical stability analysis, reinforcement work analysis and computation of ground mass properties. Then this offer rational slope stability analysis, rock mass decision and counterplan.

  • We introduce a novel method for reconstructing the projected matter distributions of galaxy clusters with weak-lensing (WL) data based on convolutional neural network (CNN). We control the noise level of the galaxy shear catalog such that it mimics the typical properties of the existing Subaru/Suprime-Cam WL observations of galaxy clusters. We find that our mass reconstruction based on multi-layered CNN with architectures of alternating convolution and trans-convolution filters significantly outperforms the traditional mass reconstruction methods.

  • The hydrogen-rich envelope mass of a dying massive star is the key factor that determines the type and properties of the resulting supernova. Emulating wind-driven mass loss of single stars with the MESA(Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) stellar evolution code, we made a grid of models for a large parameter space of initial mass (12 M⊙ to 30M⊙), metallicity (solar, LMC and SMC), hydrogen envelope mass (0.01M⊙ to 10M⊙) for progenitor stars in their final step of evolution. Our results suggest the final luminosity of the progenitor is largely determined by the initial mass, which means there is luminosity degeneracy for stars with the same initial mass but with different hydrogen-rich envelope masses. Since we can break this degeneracy by correcting luminosity with surface gravity (spectroscopic HR diagram), we can infer the exact mass property of an observed progenitor. The surface temperature drastically varies near the envelope mass of ~0.1M⊙ and surface temperature of ~10000 K, where the demarcation between the hydrogen-rich envelope and the helium core lies, which explains the rarity of 'white' supergiants. There also exists a discontinuity in the chemical composition of the progenitor envelope around this critical hydrogen-rich envelope mass of ~0.1 M⊙, which can be tested in future observations of "flash spectroscopy" of supernovae.

  • Hydrogenation properties of Mg-Ni and Mg-Ti-Ni alloys were investigated by Pressure-Composition Isotherm (PCI) test. Those alloys were fabricated by a new alloying method, Rotation-Cylinder Method (RCM). The as-cast microstructure of Mg-10 mass% Ni alloy consists of an island-like hydride forming $\alpha$-Mg phase and the eutectic structure. After 350 cyclic tests, Mg-lO mass % Ni alloy was pulverized into fine particles of 100 nm. The fine particles, which have a large specific surface area, are highly reactive with hydrogen. However, extreme pulvehzation can separate Mg from $Mg_2Ni$ in the eutectic structure, so $Mg_2Ni$ of the eutectic structure cannot behave as a dissociated hydrogen supplier.

  • Characterization of intact protein structures in the gas phase using electrospray ionization combined with ion mobility mass spectrometry has become an important tool of research. However, the biophysical properties that govern the structures of protein ions in the gas phase remain to be understood. Here, we investigated the impact of host-guest complexation of ubiquitin (Ubq) with macrocyclic host molecules, cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s, n = 6, 7), on its structure in the gas phase. We found that CB[n] complexation induces the formation of compact Ubq ions. Both CB[6] and CB[7] exhibited similar effects despite differences in their binding properties in solution. In addition, CB[n] attachment prevented Ubq from unfolding by collisional activation. Based on the experimental results, we suggest that CB[n]s prevent unfolding of Ubq during transfer to the gas phase to promote the formation of compact protein ions. Furthermore, interaction with positively charged residues per se is suggested to be the most important factor for the host-guest complexation effect.
