Korean Red Ginseng extract attenuates alcohol-induced addictive responses and cognitive impairments by alleviating neuroinflammation

  • Background: Alcohol is one of the most commonly used psychoactive drugs. Due to its addictive characteristics, many people struggle with the side effects of alcohol. Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is a traditional herbal medicine that is widely used to treat various health problems. However, the effects and mechanisms of KRG in alcohol-induced responses remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced responses. Methods: We investigated two aspects: alcohol-induced addictive responses and spatial working memory impairments. To determine the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced addictive responses, we performed conditioned place preference tests and withdrawal symptom observations. To assess the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced spatial working memory impairment, Y-maze, Barnes maze, and novel object recognition tests were performed using mice after repeated alcohol and KRG exposure. To investigate the potential mechanism of KRG activity, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and western blot analysis were performed. Results: KRG-treated mice showed dose-dependent restoration of impaired spatial working memory following repeated alcohol exposure. Furthermore, withdrawal symptoms to alcohol were reduced in mice treated with KRG and alcohol. The PKA-CREB signaling pathway was activated after alcohol administration, which was reduced by KRG. However, the levels of inflammatory cytokines were increased by alcohol and decreased by KRG. Conclusion: Taken together, KRG may alleviate alcohol-induced spatial working memory impairments and addictive responses through anti-neuroinflammatory activity rather than through the PKA-CREB signaling pathway.

The Efficient Merge Operation in Log Buffer-Based Flash Translation Layer for Enhanced Random Writing (임의쓰기 성능향상을 위한 로그블록 기반 FTL의 효율적인 합병연산)

  • Recently, the flash memory consistently increases the storage capacity while the price of the memory is being cheap. This makes the mass storage SSD(Solid State Drive) popular. The flash memory, however, has a lot of defects. In order that these defects should be complimented, it is needed to use the FTL(Flash Translation Layer) as a special layer. To operate restrictions of the hardware efficiently, the FTL that is essential to work plays a role of transferring from the logical sector number of file systems to the physical sector number of the flash memory. Especially, the poor performance is attributed to Erase-Before-Write among the flash memory's restrictions, and even if there are lots of studies based on the log block, a few problems still exists in order for the mass storage flash memory to be operated. If the FAST based on Log Block-Based Flash often is generated in the wide locality causing the random writing, the merge operation will be occur as the sectors is not used in the data block. In other words, the block thrashing which is not effective occurs and then, the flash memory's performance get worse. If the log-block makes the overwriting caused, the log-block is executed like a cache and this technique contributes to developing the flash memory performance improvement. This study for the improvement of the random writing demonstrates that the log block is operated like not only the cache but also the entire flash memory so that the merge operation and the erase operation are diminished as there are a distinct mapping table called as the offset mapping table for the operation. The new FTL is to be defined as the XAST(extensively-Associative Sector Translation). The XAST manages the offset mapping table with efficiency based on the spatial locality and temporal locality.

  • Usual satellite design adopts hardware Error Detection and Correction (EDAC) circuitary for memory elements to endure proper operation in space radiation environment and periodic read-back(scrubbing) scheme to remove errors occurred and to prevent further accumulation of errors, in parallel, But lack of detail radiation test data upset rates of KOMPSAT-2 mass storage was estimated very worse compared to that of KOMPSAT-1, which was evaluated from very precise radiation test. Although upset rates were evaluated enough low to accommodate by KOMPSAT-2 Flight Software, hardware scrubbing scheme is studied to shorten scrubbing time as well. This paper describes hardware scrubbing architecture having minimum 1.88 minutes scrubbing interval over 1 Gbits memory.

  • This paper introduces a shape memory alloy-restrainer-damper(SMA-RD) to protect multiple span continuous steel bridges from seismic loads. The type of bridges has only one fixed bearing condition on a pier and expansion bearings are located on the other piers and abutments. Due to this state and a big mass of the deck, these bridges are usually very vulnerable to column's damage on which fixed bearings are located and large deformation of abutments in passive action. Two types of SMA-RDs are developed, and their effect is inspected for protecting the bridges through seismic analyses. Conventional steel restrainer cables are also used to reduce the seismic vulnerability of the bridge and the results are compared to those of the SMA-RDs.

  • The motion of a ship advancing in regular waves is analyzed in the time-domain using the convolution integral of the radiation forces. The memory effect functions and infinite frequency added masses are obtained from the solution of the three dimensional improved Green integral equation in the frequency domain by making use of the Fourier transformation. The ship motions in regular waves have been calculated by both the time and frequency domain methods. It has been shown that they agree very well with each other. The present time-domain method can be used to predict the time histories of unsteady motions in irregular waves. It can also be used to calculate the hydrostatic and Froude-Krylov forces over the instantaneous wetted surface of the ship hull to predict large ship motions, in a practical sense, advancing in large amplitude waves.

  • Some gases can be formed into hydrate by physical combination with water under appropriate temperature and pressure condition. Besides them, it was found that the pore size of the sediments can affect the formation and dissociation of hydrate. In this study, formation temperatures of carbon dioxide and methane hydrate have been measured using isobaric method to investigate the effects of flow rates of gases on formation condition of hydrate in porous rock samples. The flow rates of gases were controlled using a mass flow controller. To minimize Memory effect, system temperature increased for the dissociation of gas hydrates and re-established the initial saturation. The results show that the formation temperature of hydrate decreases with increasing the injection flow rate of gas. This indicates that the velocity of gas in porous media may act as kinds of inhibitor for the formation of hydrate.

  • The 1+1 two-photon Resonant Enhanced Multiphoton Ionization (REMPI) spectra of 1,4-dichlorobenzene was obtained from 240 nm through to 250 nm on a laser mass spectrometer. Special care was taken to build up a heatable sample inlet system suitable for detecting a trace semi-volatile organic compound and reducing the memory effort on the inner wall of the inlet system. The detection limits of 1,4-dichlorobenzene in ppbV/V concentration range at certain wavelengths are presented.

  • Flash memory has been attracting attention as the next mass storage media for mobile computing systems such as notebook computers and UMPC(Ultra Mobile PC)s due to its low power consumption, high shock and vibration resistance, and small size. A storage system with flash memory excels in random read, sequential read, and sequential write. However, it comes short in random write because of flash memory's physical inability to overwrite data, unless first erased. To overcome this shortcoming, we propose an SSD(Solid State Disk) architecture with two novel features. First, we utilize non-volatile FRAM(Ferroelectric RAM) in conjunction with NAND flash memory, and produce a synergy of FRAM's fast access speed and ability to overwrite, and NAND flash memory's low and affordable price. Second, the architecture categorizes host write requests into small random writes and large sequential writes, and processes them with two different buffer management, optimized for each type of write request. This scheme has been implemented into an SSD prototype and evaluated with a standard PC environment benchmark. The result reveals that our architecture outperforms conventional HDD and other commercial SSDs by more than three times in the throughput for random access workloads.

  • Wireless Internet, created through the merging of mobile communication with Internet technology, provides the advantage of mobility, but the restrictions of the mobile environment are deterring it from growing into a mass public service. Of the restricting factors of the wireless environment, narrow memory space creates the disadvantage of not being able to manage resources in mobile devices efficiently Because there is a limit to obtaining sufficient memory space from hardware made with consideration of portability, future devices will need to have a platform design with storage area extended from internal storage to external storage space. In this paper, we present a mobile agent that extends the memory space from only the inside of a mobile device to an external server making it possible to use data by on-line Run-time, and can also manage internal files efficiently. We have designed and implemented a RMS(Resources Management System) as a realization. Devices using the proposed RMS will be able to apply extended processes with the 'Mobile Space Extension' and will be benefited with optimal memory space through efficient internal file management.
