PURPOSE: This study examined the specific clinical risk factors in middle-aged men with age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass (ALSMM). METHODS: The present research analyzed the data from a cross-sectional study of 1,564 community-dwelling participants aged between 40 to 49 years old. The participants were screened for ALSMM. The study examined various risk factors, including age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, smoking and drinking status, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and triglyceride and cholesterol levels. RESULTS: The risk factors of ALSMM were height, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, drinking status, fasting glucose, and triglyceride levels (p < .05). The weight, triglyceride, and smoking status variables were non-significant (p > .05). CONCLUSION: The risk factors for ALSMM among community-dwelling adults were determined. These results are expected to contribute to the existing literature on ALSMM and provide potential risk factors associated with the development of ALSMM in middle-aged males.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gender, age, body weight, muscle mass, fat mass, body mass index (BMI), metabolism, and compliance with medication on weight loss in obese adults. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 178 patients who were visited to the Korean Oriental Clinic for 3~6 month and had obesity treatment using Gamitaeumjowee-tang from April 2017 to May 2017. We conducted a paired T-test, correlation coefficient and decision tree to analyze factors influencing obesity treatment. Results: The results of correlation analysis showed that initial weight (kg), initial fat mass (kg), BMI ($kg/m^2$), compliance with medication (%), Original Harris-Benedict Equation, Revised Harris-Benedict Equation and The Mifflin St Jeor Equation was significantly correlated to weight loss (kg) (P<0.001). As a result of constructing the decision tree model, it showed that over 5% weight loss of their initial weight (n=154) was related with initial BMI ($kg/m^2$), compliance with medication (%) and initial muscle mass (kg). In case of over 5 kg weight loss of their initial weight (n=131), it was related with initial BMI ($kg/m^2$), compliance with medication (%) and final BMI ($kg/m^2$). Conclusions: This study suggests that weight loss may be affected by initial factors and that initial factors can be used for obesity treatment.

This study was carried out to determine the relationships between cellulose decomposition and soil environmental factors in larch (Larix leptolepis) and pine (red pine: Pinus densiflora; rigitaeda pine: P. rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda) species planted in the same year (1963). The variation of cellulose mass loss with soil temperature, soil pH, soil $CO_2$ efflux rates, and soil water content was measured monthly for 4 months (July, August, September and October 2006) from three coniferous plantations. Mean mass loss rates during the study period were generally more rapid in rigitaeda pine (6.5 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) than in red pine (6.2 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) or larch (6.1 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) plantations, although the mass loss rates were not significantly different among three tree species (P > 0.05). Cellulose mass loss rates among three tree species were positively correlated with soil temperature (red pine: r = 0.77, P < 0.05; rigitaeda pine: r = 0.59, P < 0.05; larch: r = 0.48, P < 0.05) at the 20 cm soil depth, while the mass loss rates were negatively correlated with soil pH (red pine: r = -0.63, P < 0.05; rigitaeda pine: r = -0.47, P < 0.05; larch: r = -0.43, P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between cellulose mass loss and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates except for regitaeda pine plantation, while no significant correlation (P > 0.05) between cellulose mass loss and soil water content in larch or rigitaeda pine. The results suggest that cellulose mass loss rates in soil layers depend on the different soil environmental factors caused by tree species.
Artificial brown-rot decay was induced to two wood species, Pinus densiflora and Pinus radiata. A modified direct inoculation method was used and the decay indicators of mass loss and two compressive mechanical properties, maximum compressive strength (MCS) and compressive stiffness, were estimated over the period of 8 weeks of fungal exposure. Measurable mass loss occurred 2 weeks after the fungal attack, with 15% to 22% of the loss occurring 8 weeks after fungal exposure with Fornitopsis palustris and Gloeophyllurn trabeurn. Mechanical properties proved to be far more sensitive than mass loss detection: approximately five to six times by quantity. Of the two mechanical properties, MCS was more sensitive to and consistent with progressive brown-rot decay. An ultrasonic test was performed to determine the feasibility and accuracy of this method for nondestructive detection of brown-rot decay. The ultrasonic test is highly sensitive at qualitative detection of the early stages of brown-rot decay.
We examined spatial and temporal patterns of root decomposition for three and half years, from October 1986 to April 1990, in semi-arid Chihuahuan Desert. Decomposition of roots occurred in a two-phased pattern: an early period of rapid mass loss followed by a period of slower loss. The rate of root decomposition had a high negative correlation with the initial lignin concentration in roots (r=-0.84, p<0.05). Annual mass loss rate of Baileya multiradiata, a herbaceous annual, was the highest with the value of 0.60, while that of Panicum obtusum. a perennial grass which was restricted to playa, was the lowest with 0.13. The mass loss rate of roots in the playa was the lowest among the vegetation zones along the transect. After 42 months elapsed, fluffgrass roots in playa lost 40% of the initial mass, while in other sites it lost on average 55% of the initial mass. In all roots except for desert marigold, there was an initial release of nitrogen early in decomposition followed by net nitrogen immobilization. Nitrogen concentration of the desert marigold roots showed linear increase from the beginning. Lignin concentration of perennial grass roots were higher than those of herbaceous annual and woody perennial root.
In this paper, we conducted high velocity impact test for Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates and proposed advanced method for predicting the absorbed energy of composite laminates. During high-velocity impact test, we discovered loss of projectile mass macroscopically using high speed camera, thus we calculated the absorbed energy of composite laminates by taking loss of projectile mass into account. We proposed a model for predicting the absorbed energy of composite laminates subjected to high-velocity impact, the absorbed energy was classified into static energy and dynamic energy. The static energy was calculated by the quasi-static perforation equation that is related to the fiber breakage and static elastic energy. The dynamic energy can be divided by the kinetic energy of deformed specimen and fragment mass. Finally, the predicted absorbed energy considering loss of projectile mass was compared with experimental results.

Utilization of additively manufactured parts in intended applications is limited by surface roughness. Roughness reduction in internal surface area of AM parts is exponentially more challenging. Reported methodologies for roughness reduction, result in material loss and limits the operational life of these parts. Herein, we explored electropolishing to reduce surface roughness of SLM manufactured 316L steel. Furthermore, the mass loss incurred during electropolishing is deduced as a function of polishing time. The change in roughness, wettability and surface passivation were studied and discussed in detail.

Recently, we reported that significant ion loss occurred prior to its detection in the conventional single particles mass spectrometry and more seriously the loss is ion-kinetic-energy-dependent. These lead to significant error in the measured chemical composition of nanoparticles. Here we attempted to design a novel ion optics that is capable of 100% detection of ions generated from single nanoparticle. Using a commercial software SIMION, we simulated the trajectories of ions launched at different speeds inside the previous single particle mass spectrometer We tested how affect changes in shape of repelling plate, adding Einzel lens, substitution of tube electrode between extraction and acceleration grids. As a results, we could find a best design by assembling the trials in the present condition.

Evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss were measured for three different micro-fin tubes and a smooth tube. The experiments were carried out with R-22 over a wide range of vapor Quality, mass velocity and heat flux. Heat transfer coefficient of the tube with slightly modified fin shape was found to be higher than that of the commercial reference tube by 60%. The improvement of heat transfer has been achieved without noticeable increase of pressure loss. Heat transfer coefficient was increased with increasing quality, refrigerant mass flux, and heat flux. However, the effect of refrigerant mass flux and heat flux was not great. Heat transfer coefficient at bottom was lower than that at top of the tube in low quality region, which suggested the existence of stratification in the micro-fin tube. Pressure drop was linearly increased with increasing refrigerant quality and was proportional to about square of mass flux.
A planet revolving around binary star system is a familiar system. Studies of these systems are important because they provide precise knowledge of planet formation and orbit evolution. In this study, a method to determine the evolution of an exoplanet revolving around a binary star system using different rates of stellar mass loss will be introduced. Using a hierarchical triple body system, in which the outer body can be moved with the center of mass of the inner binary star as a two-body problem, the long period evolution of the exoplanet orbit is determined depending on a Hamiltonian formulation. The model is simulated by numerical integrations of the Hamiltonian equations for the system over a long time. As a conclusion, the behavior of the planet orbital elements is quite affected by the rate of the mass loss from the accompanying binary star.
