In this paper, experiments with an air-breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for mobile devices were carried out according to cathode conditions. These conditions are defined by the cathode flow field plate type (the channel type, the open type) and the cathode surface direction. Single-cell and 6-cell stack were used in the experiments. The experimental results showed that the open-type cathode flow field plate gave a better performance than the small channel type. In the experiments related to the direction of the slits on the cathode flow field plate, the horizontal slit cell was better than the vertical one. With respect to the cathode surface direction, when the cathode surface is placed in the direction normal to the ground, the PEMFC generated more stable power in the mass transport loss region. Since stable power in the mass transport region is closely related to the air supply, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for air-breathing PEMFC of different cathode surface directions was performed.

This study was conducted to develop new drying process for automatic control and marine engi-neering system. Air-water tests were carried out to investigate dryer performance. The dispersed flow in he dryer test apparatuses was also simulated by using a numerical code which solves the Dittus-Boelter equation for continuous liquid phase and the Reynolds equation of droplet motion for continuous liquid phase and the Reynolds equation of droplet motion for dispersed phase to predict droplet removal efficiency. Proper conditions for dehumidification were optimized by response ambient conditions. When the selected indexes were constrained in the range of 85-98% moisture content above $15^{\circ}$ and more than mass flow rates of moist air 750kg/h. The numerical results were compared with the experimental data pertaining to the removal effi-ciency at chamber stage and overall pressure drop along concentric tubes Good agreement was obtained as for the efficiency while relatively poor agreement was obtained for the relative humidity. The results also showed that the efficiency depended strongly on the relative humidity at the inlet condition which indicated the importance of estimating the heat exchanger length. Effects of some design parameters in both removal efficiency and breakthrough onset condition are discussed.
In this study, spray characteristics of a dual airblast atomizer are addressed. Three dimensional characteristics of a dual airblast atomizer with air swirl are measured to provide the significant data. The liquid flow rate was fixed at 0.06 kg/min, and atomizing air was controlled at the liquid-air mass ratio of 4.0. The performance of the spray with co-swirl and counter-swirl flow was investigated at each point in the developed spray region using a three-component phase Doppler particle analyzer. This instrument was also used to evaluate the concentration profiles. The three dimensional mean velocity were investigated of present flow characteristics of the dual airblast atomizer. In addition, drop size distributions, mean droplet size profile, and droplet concentration were analyzed to understand atomization characteristics. This experimental results can be conveniently utilized for the preliminary design of gas turbine engines for aircraft.
Once the condensation of water vapor in moist air around a thin airfoil occurs, liquid droplets nucleate. The condensation process releases heat to the surrounding gaseous components of moist air and significantly affects their thermodynamic and flow properties. As a results, variations in the aerodynamic performance of airfoils can be found. In the present work, the effects of upstream Mach number and thickness ratio of airfoil on the transonic flow of moist air around a thin airfoil are investigated by numerical analysis. The results shows that a significant condensation occurs as the upstream Mach number is increased at the fixed thickness ratio of airfoil($\epsilon$=0.12) and as the thickness ratio of airfoil is increased at the fixed upstream Mach number($M_{\infty}$=0.80). The condensate mass fraction is also increased and dispersed widely around an airfoil as the upstream Mach number and thickness ratio of airfoil are increased. The position of shock wave for moist air flow move toward the leading edge of airfoil when it is compared with the position of shock wave for dry air.

The performance of a $CO_2$ heat pump water heater was measured with a variation of operating conditions such as refrigerant charge amount, outdoor temperature, compressor frequency, EEV opening, and water mass flow rate. The optimum refrigerant charge amount of the $CO_2$ system was 1800 g. At water mass flow rates of 75, 85, and 95 kg/h, the water heating temperatures were 74, 67, and $62^{\circ}C$ and COPs were 2.6, 2.8, and 3.0, respectively. Besides, the compressor frequency and water mass flow rate were adjusted to maintain the water heating temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ with the decrease of outdoor temperature. As the outdoor temperature decreased by $5^{\circ}C$, the compressor frequency increased beyond 60 Hz and the water mass flow rate decreased by 16.7%.

This study presents a numerical model to predict the behavior of frost layer growth. The characteristics of the heat and mass transfer inside the frost layer are analyzed by coupling the air flow with the frost layer. The present model is validated by comparing with the several other analytical models. It has been known that most of the previous models cause considerable errors depending on the working conditions or correlations used in predicting the frost thickness growth, whereas the model in this work estimates the thickness of the frost layer more accurately within an error of 10% in comparison with the experimental data. Simulation results are presented for variations of heat and mass transfer during the frost formation and for the behavior of frost layer growth along the direction of air flow.

Small capacity gas absorption systems for cooling and heating have been favorably considered to reduce the seasonal imbalance of electrical loads and LNG consumption recently. A multifunctional plate-fin heat exchanger was adopted as an absorber and the performance was tested and analyzed to reduce the size and weight of the absorption heat pump. The test was performed using breadboard type ammonia absorption machine. The performance was compared with the plate type absorber and there was little difference in heat and mass transfer characteristics. The heat and mass transfer performance was a function of poor solution and vapor flow rates and the mass transfer was dependent on vapor flow rate more than heat transfer.

A dynamic model which simulates the coupled heat and mass transfer within a vertical tube absorber was developed. The liquid film is a binary mixture of two components, and both of these components are present in the vapor phase. The pressure, concentration, temperature and mass flow rate of the vapor are obtained by assuming that the pressure is uniform within an absorber. The model was applied to an absorber for an ammonia/water absorption refrigerator. The transient behaviors of the pressure, the outlet temperature and the concentration of the solution and the cooling water outlet temperature on a step change at the absorber inlet of the cooling water temperature, the vapor mass flow rate and the concentration of the solution were shown.

A revised VX cycle using ammonia/water as the working fluid is a cycle which is suitable to produce cooling utilizing low temperature hat sources. The cycle was analyzed numerically to investigate the effects of the design and operating conditions on the performance. It was shown that both COP and cooling capacity were significantly influenced by the performance of he rectifier. Insufficient UA of the rectifier reduced both ammonia mass fraction and mass flow rate of the vapor entering the condenser, which produced cooling effect in the evaporator. As the temperature and the mass flow rate of the heat source increased, both COP and exergetic efficiency decreased due to the irreversibilities produced in heat exchangers, but cooling capacity did not vary much. Cooling capacity increased significantly as the coolant temperature decreased, although COP and exergetic efficiency remained nearly constant.

An experimental study on the performance evaluation of a brazed plate heat exchanger with 10USRT of normal cooling capacity has been carried out. In the present study, a brazed plate heat exchanger was tested at a chevron angle $25^{\circ}$with refrigerant R-22. Refrigerant mass flux was ranged from 23 to 58 kg/$m^2$s in condensation, and from 22 to 53 kg/$m^2$s in evaporation. The heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are increased as the mass flux increases. The water side pressure drop is increased as the cooling water flow rate and chilled water flow rate increase, while mass flux has little effect. It is also shown that the system performance can be improved by enlarging condensation heat transfer area.
