  • To study the effects of tempering on microstructure and mechanical property of Cu-22 wt.%Sn alloy, tempering was carried out for 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 30 min, 3 h, 5 h, and 10 h at 325, 370, 500, and 570℃, which are in the (α+ε), lower (α+δ), higher (α+δ), and (α+γ) region of Cu-Sn phase diagram, respectively. Overall, the hardness value increased and decreased over time at all tempering temperatures, and the time to reach the maximum hardness value beccame shorter as the tempering temperature increases. At the beginning of tempering at each temperature, a portion of the β' phase was decomposed into a fine (α+δ) phase or (α+γ) phase, so that the Cu-22Sn alloy had a high hardness value. However, as the tempering time increases, the hardness value of the alloy decreased due to the growth of the decomposed phases.

  • In a line heating process for hull forming, the phase of the steel transforms from austenite to martensite, bainite, ferrite, or pearlite depending on the actual speed of cooling following line heating. In order to simulate the water cooling process widely used in shipyards, a heat transfer analysis on the effects of impinging water jet, film boiling, and radiation was performed. From the above simulation it was possible to obtain the actual speed of cooling and volume percentage of each phase in the inherent strain region of a line heated steel plate. Based on the material properties calculated from the volume percentage of each phase, it should be possible to predict the plate deformations due to line heating with better precision. Compared to the line heating experimental results, the simulated water cooling process method was verified to improve the predictability of the plate deformation due to line heating.

  • The strain aging behavior of a low carbon dual phase steel was examined in two conditions: representing room temperature strain aging (100 ℃ × 1 hr after 7.5 % prestrain) and bake hardening process (170 ℃ × 20 min after 2 % prestrain), basing on carbon effective diffusion and dislocation distribution. The first principle calculations revealed that (Mn or Cr)-vacancy-C complexes exhibit the strongest attractive interaction compared to other complexes, therefore, act as strong trapping sites for carbon. For room temperature strain aging condition, the carbon effective diffusion distance is smaller than the dislocation distance in the high dislocation density region near ferrite/martensite interfaces as well as ferrite interior considering the carbon trapping effect of the (Mn or Cr)-vacancy-C complexes, implying ineffective Cottrell atmosphere formation. Under bake hardening condition, the carbon effective diffusion distance is larger compared to the dislocation distance in both regions. Therefore, formation of the Cottrell atmosphere is relatively easy resulting in to a relatively large increase in yield strength under bake hardening condition.

  • The corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tubes with post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) conditions(950, 1000, 1050, 1100 ℃ for 5 and 30 min) were evaluated by electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization and critical pitting temperature measurements. This study showed that the critical metallurgical factors affecting the degradation of corrosion resistance of a steel tube in as-welded condition were the unbalanced phase fraction(ferrite:austenite = 94:4), Cr2N precipitation, and phase transformation from the austenite phase to ɛ-martensite(via stress-induced phase transformation). The improvement in the corrosion resistance of the welded specimen depends greatly on the PWHT conditions. The specimens after PWHT conducted below 1000 ℃ showed inferior corrosion resistance, caused by precipitation of the sigma phase enriched with Cr and Mo. At 1100 ℃ for a longer duration in PWHT, the ferrite phase grows, and its fraction increases, leading to an unbalanced phase fraction in the microstructure. As a result, pitting can be initiated primarily at the interface between the ferrite/austenite phase, particularly in base metal.

  • There is a growing interest to replace the commercial steels with non-heat treated steels, which does not involve the spheroidization and quenching-tempering treatment. However, Non-heat treated steels should satisfy high strength and good formability without performing heat treatment. Therefore, it is important to investigate optimum materials showing a good combination of strength and formability after the drawing process. In this study, Dual-Phase Steels were studied as candidate materials for non-heat treated steels, which have different martensite morphologies and volume fractions obtained through heat-treatment of intercritical quenching (IcQ), intermediate quenching (ImQ) and step quenching (SQ). The mechanical properties of DP steels were measured by tension and compression tests. Also, the cold formability of three DP steels which have similar tensile strength value was investigated by estimating the deformation resistance and the forming limit. The deformation resistance which is important factor in determining die life was estimated by calculating the deformation energy. And the forming limit was estimated by measuring the critical strain revealing crack initiation at the notch tip of the specimens.

  • Fatigue tests were carried out by a rotary bending testing machine of cantilever type. M.E.F.(ferrite encapsulated islands of martensite) materials were made by a series of heat treatment from a low carbon steel(SM 20 C). The fatigue tests were conducted at stress levels of 302 MPa and with frequencies of 25Hz, 2.5 Hz and 0.5 Hz in 3% NaCl solution. The fatigue strength increased with frequency got higher. The microcracks and corrosion pits were generated at the boundary between the matrix and the 2nd phase. The cracks generated by the corrosion pits were coalesced with the pits around the notch and became the initial crack. The $N_i/N_f$ ratio increased as the frequency and stress level decreased. The interference phenomenon increased with stress level and frequency gots higher. The crack propagation rate was delayed as the stress level lowers and the frequency gets higher, however, the range of the stress intensity factor depended only on a stress level.

  • The sliding wear behavior of an iron-base NOREM 02 hardfacing alloy was investigated in the temperature range of $25~250^{\circ}C$ under a contact stress of 103MPa (15ksi). With increasing temperature, the wear loss of Norem 02 in water increased slightly up to $180^{\circ}C$ at which Norem 02 showed the wear loss of 2.1mg. The wear resistance of Norem 02 resulted from the surface hardening due to the strain-induced phase transformation from austenite to $\alpha$'martensite during sliding wear. The wear loss of Norem 02 was smaller in water compared to air at same temperature because the water could be served as a sort of lubricant. The wear mode of NOREM 02 changed abruptly to severe adhesive wear at $190^{\circ}C$ and galling occurred above $200^{\circ}C$. It was caused that the strain- induced phase transformation took place below $180^{\circ}C$ while not above $190^{\circ}C$. Therefore, Norem 02 was considered to be inadequate at high temperature service area.

  • Shape-memory alloys (SMA) have interesting behaviors and important mechanical properties due to the solid-solid phase transformation. These phenomena are dominated by the evolution of microstructures. In recent years, the microstructures in SMAs have been studied extensively and modeled using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. However, it remains difficult to identify the crystal variants in the simulation results, which consist of large numbers of atoms. In the present work, a method is developed to identify the austenite phase and the monoclinic martensite crystal variants in MD results. The transformation matrix of each lattice is calculated to determine the corresponding crystal variant. Evolution of the volume fraction of the crystal variants and the microstructure in Ni-Ti SMAs under thermal and mechanical boundary conditions are examined. The method is validated by comparing MD-simulated interface normals with theoretical solutions. In addition, the results show that, in certain cases, the interatomic potential used in the current study leads to inconsistent monoclinic lattices compared with crystallographic theory. Thus, a specific modification is applied and the applicability of the potential is discussed.

  • The need to lower the weights of automotive vehicle and to improve the safety of cars has resulted in the development of high strength steels such as TRIP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) and DP (Dual Phase) steel. It is well known that the higher strength of steel shows the poorer press formability. Among the high strength steels, DP steel shows several good characteristics such as low yield ratio, high initial n value, high elongation, high bake hardenability and anti-aging property. However, there's a certain limit in application of DP steels to the automotive panel parts because their poor deep drawbility caused by martensite. In this study, the effect of alloying elements on the deep drawability and recrystallization texture in TS 440MPa grade DP steel with 0.015~0.02% carbon has been investigated on the base of SEM, TEM, XRD and EBSD analysis.
