  • This paper uses a survey data to analyze the age-specific fertility rates, age-specific cumulative fertility rates, and ages of marriage of the five birth cohorts of Korean women born in the 1940s and thereafter. It was found that later cohorts reach their highest age-specific fertility rate at higher ages than earlier cohorts. The age-specific cumulative fertility rates of the 1950s and 1960 cohorts were found to be much lower than those of the immediately preceding cohorts, while those of the 1970s and 1980s cohorts were not different from those of the 1960s cohorts. Women belonging to later cohorts were found to get married at relatively higher ages. The estimation results of the hazard model show that women belonging to later cohorts and those with more schooling have a tendency to get married at higher ages. The effect of the birth cohorts is thought to be due to the economic, social, and cultural changes in Korea during the late 50 years or so. The time interval between a woman‘s marriage and first birth was found not to be affected by either the year of marriage or that of her birth. Also, those who remained employed for some time around their marriage and those with low schooling were found to have a lower first child birth hazard, which implies that married women’s employment status and family income play an important role in their decisions on childbirth.

The subjects were members of 600 households who were aged 26 to 44 years old and not married. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and dichotomous logistic regression using SPSS WIN 12.0. Respondents pointed out that financial problems are the greatest challenges for those facing old age in single-person households; they said that a stable job is the most important factor for secure living. About 57% of household residents responded that they have prepared for retirement, and a majority of them said they hoped to spend their elderly years with a marriage partner. The financial statements from single-person households were inferior to those from other types of households. The assets of single-person household members were less than those of other households. Only 10.5% of respondents have owned homes. The study discusses policy implications for those who want marriage and for those who don't want it. For those who want marriage, job-seeking support was proposed, and for the others, tax deductions and family programs for single-person households were proposed.

  • This study examines difference in age at marriage between spouses and more importantly, investigates into the economic and social factors affecting the ratio or probability of wife-older marriages. Empirical analysis is carried out by applying both logit model and multinomial logit model to an independently pooled cross-section over 2004-2007. The data was collected mainly from the micro data service system of the Statistics Korea. Empirical results indicate that a wife-older marriage was more likely as a wife was more educated and was a larger income earner than a husband. On the other hand, a wife's educational and income level themselves had few systematic relationships with the probability of a wife-older marriage. The probability of a wife-older marriage tended to decrease(increase) when a husband's(a wife's) marriage was the second' The study calculates the average marginal effect of difference in the income level between spouses on the probability of a wife-older marriage, which is -0.007. That is, the probability of a wife-older marriage increases by 0.7% as a husband's income level is 1 million Korean Won less than a wife's. This results presents empirical evidence against widely distributed misconception on wife-older marriage in the mass media.
