In this study we suggested two optimization models to determine conversion weight of convertible bonds. The problem of this study is same as that of Park and Shim [1]. But this study used Value-at-Risk (VaR) for risk measurement instead of CVaR, Conditional-Value-at-Risk. In comparison with conventional Markowitz portfolio models, which use the variance of return, our models used VaR. In 1996, Basel Committee on Banking Supervision recommended VaR for portfolio risk measurement. But there are difficulties in solving optimization models including VaR. Benati and Rizzi [5] proved NP-hardness of general portfolio optimization problems including VaR. We adopted their approach. But we developed efficient algorithms with time complexity O(nlogn) or less for our models. We applied examples of our models to the convertible bond issued by a semiconductor company Hynix.

Domestic construction companies suffer from the difficulty in financing in the wake of economic slump at home and abroad. In the periods of this economic slump, which hit the nation REITs, the facilitator of fluid financing and the stimulating of construction economic, has increasingly been expanded since its introduction in 2001. But, REITs relatively falls behinds any other nations, in terms of its growth speed and marketing volume. The purpose of this research thesis is to suggest the method for composing a portfolio using Markowitz portfolio selection models for stimulating REITs. Main contents are as follows. First, the thesis made the comparative analysis on profit increase in REITs investment in application of models by Markowitz and REITs derivatives from 2007/07/03 to 2008/07/21 during investment analysis periods. The result showed that total profits by Markowitz model amounted to about 10 percent higher than average profits of REITs derivatives. Second, this thesis made the analysis on sensitivity of data-gathering and portfolio change periods of the existing profits, in order to measure the both periods and yield optimum profits. The six month data-collecting periods of profits accounted for some 16% higher profits than profits of REITs derivatives. In case when the two week periods of portfolio change accounted for some 11% higher profits than profits of REITs derivatives.
In this study we suggested two optimization models to answer a question from an investor standpoint : how many convertible bonds should one convert, and how many keep? One model minimizes certain risk to the minimum required expected return, the other maximizes the expected return subject to the maximum acceptable risk. In comparison with Markowitz portfolio models, which use the variance of return, our models used Conditional Value-at-Risk(CVaR) for risk measurement. As a coherent measurement, CVaR overcomes the shortcomings of Value-at-Risk(VaR). But there are still difficulties in solving CVaR including optimization models. For this reason, we adopted Rockafellar and Uryasev's[18, 19] approach. Then we could approximate the models as linear programming problems with scenarios. We also suggested to extend the models with credit risk, and applied examples of our models to Hynix 207CB, a convertible bond issued by the global semiconductor company Hynix.

This research attempts to formulate a new mean-risk model to replace the Markowitz mean-variance model by altering the risk measurement using ARCH variance instead of the original variance. In building the portfolio, samples used are closing prices of Indonesia Composite Stock Index and Indonesia Composite Bonds Index from 2013 to 2018. This study is a qualitative study using secondary data from the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Indonesia Bonds Pricing Agency. This research found that Markowitz's model is still superior when utilized in daily data, while the mean-ARCH model is appropriate with wider gap data like monthly observation. The Historical return has also proven to be more appropriate as a benchmark in selecting an optimal portfolio rather than a risk-free rate in an inefficient market. Therefore Mean-ARCH is more appropriate when utilized under data that have a wider gap between the period. The research findings show that the portfolio combination produced is inefficient due to the market inefficiency indicated by the meager return of the stock, while bears notable standard deviation. Therefore, the researcher of this study proposed to replace the risk-free rate as a benchmark with the historical return. The Historical return proved to be more realistic than the risk-free rate in inefficient market conditions.

We focus on the issues of the non-linear return/risk relationship of IT investment and the balance between return and risk of IT portfolio. We develop an IT project selection model by integrating DEA models with Markowitz portfolio selection theory. The project data collected from a Fortune 100 company are used to illustrate the implementation of the model. In addition, computational experiments are conducted to demonstrate the validity of the proposed model.

The traditional portfolio optimization problem is to find an investment plan for securities with reasonable trade-off between the rate of return and the risk. The seminal work in this field is the mean-variance model by Markowitz, which is a quadratic programming problem. Since it is now computationally practical to solve the model, a number of alternative models to overcome this complexity have been proposed. In this paper, among the alternatives, we focus on the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) model. More specifically, we developed an algorithm to obtain an optimal portfolio from the MAD model. We showed mathematically that the algorithm can solve the problem to optimality. We tested it using the real data from the Korean Stock Market. The results coincide with our expectation that the method can solve a variety of problems in a reasonable computational time.
There have been many studies to build a model that can help investors construct optimal portfolio. Most of the previous models, however, are based upon the path-breaking Markowitz model (1959) which is a quantitative model. One of the most important problems with that kind of quantitative model is that, in reality, most of the investors use not only quantitative, but also qualitative information when they select their optimal portfolio. Since collecting both types of information from the markets are time consuming and expensive, making a set of target assets smaller, without suffering heavy loss in the rate of return, would attract investors. To extract only desired assets among all available assets, we need knowledge that identifies investors' preference for the risk of the assets. This study suggests two-layer decision-making rules capable of identifying an investor's risk preference and an architecture applying them to a quantitative portfolio model based on risk and expected return. Our knowledge-based portfolio system is to build an investor's preference-oriented portfolio. The empirical tests using the data from Korean capital markets show the results that our model contributes significantly to the construction of a better portfolio in the perspective of an investor's benefit/cost ratio than that produced by the existing portfolio models.
Since the publication of Markowitz's (1952) mean-variance portfolio model, research on portfolio optimization has been conducted in many fields. The existing mean-variance portfolio model forms a nonlinear convex problem. Applying Dantzig's linear programming method, it was converted to a linear form, which can effectively reduce the algorithm computation time. In this paper, we proposed a Dantzig perturbation portfolio model that can reduce management costs and transaction costs by constructing a portfolio with stable and small (sparse) assets. The average return and risk were adjusted according to the purpose by applying a perturbation method in which a certain part is invested in the existing benchmark and the rest is invested in the assets proposed as a portfolio optimization model. For a covariance estimation, we proposed a Gaussian kernel weight covariance that considers time-dependent weights by reflecting time-series data characteristics. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated by comparing it with the benchmark portfolio with 5 real data sets. Empirical results show that the proposed portfolios provide higher expected returns or lower risks than the benchmark. Further, sparse and stable asset selection was obtained in the proposed portfolios.
This study applied the portfolio approach as a means to provide decision-making information for the establishment of the optimal production plan for non-timber products. The target items of non-timber forest product were Chestnut, Jujube, Walnut and Astringent Persimmon. The data used in this study were the annual report of forestry production cost survey which contains the annual production, annual gross income, and annual product cost from 2008 to 2013. These data were used to calculate the expected return of non-timber forest product. The objective function in the portfolio models was to minimize the expected return volatility, called risk and the constrain was to achieve the minimum expected return rate. Results indicated that the production ratio of the nuts and fruits in 2013 was 7% for Chestnut, 20% for Jujube, 5% for Walnut and 68% for Astringent Persimmon. Furthermore, portfolio presented that the production ratio was 10% for Chestnut, 9% for Jujube, 3% for Walnut and 78% for Astringent Persimmon in the near future. The cause was analyzed due to maintain stable production and income of Astringent Persimmon and Chestnut. Meanwhile, the revenue of Walnuts and Jujube was in great variation with relatively higher revenues.
