  • A finite element model for simulating gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow in open channel is developed based on dynamic wave equation using Petrov-Galerkin method. A matrix stability analysis shows the selective damping of short wave lengths and excellent phase accuracies achived by Petrov-Galerkin method. Whereas the Preissmann scheme displays less selective damping and poor phase accuracies, and Bubnov-Galerkin method shows nondissipative characteristics whicn causes a divergence problem in short wave length. The analysis also shows that the Petrov-Galerkin method displays the desirable combination of selective damping of high frequency progressive waves over a wide range of Courant number and good phase accuracy at low Courant number. Therefore, the Petrov-Galerkin can be effectively applied to gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow.

  • Backoff mechanism serves as one of the key technologies in the MAC-layer of wireless mobile networks. The traditional Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) mechanism in IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) and other existing backoff mechanisms poses several performance issues. For instance, the Contention Window (CW) oscillations occur frequently; a low delay QoS guarantee cannot be provided for real-time transmission, and services with different priorities are not differentiated. For these problems, we present a novel Multi-Priority service differentiated and Adaptive Backoff (MPAB) algorithm over IEEE 802.11 DCF for wireless mobile networks in this paper. In this algorithm, the backoff stage is chosen adaptively according to the channel status and traffic priority, and the forwarding and receding transition probability between the adjacent backoff stages for different priority traffic can be controlled and adjusted for demands at any time. We further employ the 2-dimensional Markov chain model to analyze the algorithm, and derive the analytical expressions of the saturation throughput and average medium access delay. Both the accuracy of the expressions and the algorithm performance are verified through simulations. The results show that the performance of the MPAB algorithm can offer a higher throughput and lower delay than the BEB algorithm.

  • In this paper, we have proposed the interference analysis method which uses both an interference probability model at the PHY layer of RFID system and the DTMC model at the MAC layer of USN system. Using the proposed method, we have performed sharing analysis between passive RFID and USN systems at the Korean RFID/USN frequency bands. If 1% performance degradation of USN system is allowed, RFID and USN systems can share the frequency bands where channel number is greater or equal to 20 on condition that radius of protection area is greater than 300 m.

  • It is well-known that the cooperative communication and error control technology can improve the network performance, but most existing cooperative MAC protocols have not focused on how to cope with the contention process caused by cooperation and how to reduce the bad influence of channel packet error rate on the system performance. Inspired by this, this paper first modifies and improves the basic rules of the IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to optimize the contention among the multi-relay in a cooperative ARQ scheme. Secondly, a hybrid ARQ protocol with soft combining is adopted to make full use of the effective information in the error data packet and hence improve the ability of the receiver to decode the data packet correctly. The closed expressions of network performance including throughput and average packet transmission delay in a saturated network are then analyzed and derived by establishing a dedicated two-dimensional Markov model and solving its steady-state distribution. Finally, the performance evaluation and superiority of the proposed protocol are validated in different representative study cases through MATLAB simulations.

  • In this paper, we present a new method to complete Dynamic Spectrum Access by modifying the reward function. Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is an eligible algorithm to predict the upcoming spectrum opportunity. In POMDP, Reward function is the last portion and very important for prediction. However, the Reward function has only two states (Busy and Idle). When collision happens in the channel, reward function indicates busy state which is responsible for the throughput decreasing of secondary user. In this paper, we focus the difference between busy and collision state. We have proposed a new algorithm for reward function that indicates an additional state of collision which brings better communication opportunity for secondary users. Secondary users properly utilize opportunities to access Primary User channels for efficient data transmission with the help of the new reward function. We have derived mathematical belief vector of the new algorithm as well. Simulation results have corroborated the superior performance of improved reward function. The new algorithm has increased the throughput for secondary user in cognitive radio network.

  • In this paper, we present an analytical and simulated study on the performance of adaptive vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) priority based on Transmission Distance Reliability Range (TDRR) and data type. VANET topology changes rapidly due to its inherent nature of high mobility nodes and unpredictable environments. Therefore, nodes in VANET must be able to adapt to the ever changing environment and optimize parameters to enhance performance. However, there is a lack of adaptability in the current VANET scheme. Existing VANET IEEE802.11p's Enhanced Distributed Channel Access; EDCA assigns priority solely based on data type. In this paper, we propose a new priority scheme which utilizes Markov model to perform TDRR prediction and assign priorities based on the proposed Markov TDRR Prediction with Enhanced Priority VANET Scheme (MarPVS). Subsequently, we performed an analytical study on MarPVS performance modeling. In particular, considering five different priority levels defined in MarPVS, we derived the probability of successful transmission, the number of low priority messages in back off process and concurrent low priority transmission. Finally, the results are used to derive the average transmission delay for data types defined in MarPVS. Numerical results are provided along with simulation results which confirm the accuracy of the proposed analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MarPVS results in lower transmission latency and higher packet success rate in comparison with the default IEEE802.11p scheme and greedy scheduler scheme.

  • In this paper, we analyze and propose the Joint Call Admission Control(JCAC) scheme to combine network selection scheme and radio resource reservation based Call Admission Control(CAC) in LTE-WLAN heterogeneous networks. First, We propose the JCAC system that uses network decision rate to select a network for terminal and radio resource reservation scheme in overlaying LTE-WLAN network environment. And we analyze the performance of a proposed system using markov chain model. The performance is presented in terms of the new call blocking probability, handoff call dropping probability, and channel utilization of each network. As a performance result of the our research, the system using JCAC is better than the system using non-JCAC. We found a suitable resource reservation rate that is 10% in the system using JCAC. Our work may be useful as a guideline of resource reservation rate to introduce JCAC system using resource reservation scheme in overlaying LTE-WLAN network environment.

  • Packet loss process of cdma2000 mobile Internet channel deployed in Korea is modeled as a two state Markov process known as Gilbert model. This paper proposes the procedures to derive four parameters of the our modified Gilbert model from packet loss trace taken from two major cdma2000 networks in Korea. These four parameters are derived in various situations, that is, with fixed and moving terminals, in open field and urban areas. They can be used to produce synthetic packet loss patterns for study of the channel. Moreover, if they are calculated on-line during multimedia service, they can be used to make loss protection controls adaptive to network condition.

  • In this paper, we propose an acoustic event detection method in tunnels using non-negative tensor factorization (NTF) and hidden Markov model (HMM) applied to multi-channel audio signals. Incidents in tunnel are inherent to the system and occur unavoidably with known probability. Incidents can easily happen minor accidents and extend right through to major disaster. Most incident detection systems deploy visual incident detection (VID) systems that often cause false alarms due to various constraints such as night obstacles and a limit of viewing angle. To this end, the proposed method first tries to separate and detect every acoustic event, which is assumed to be an in-tunnel incident, from noisy acoustic signals by using an NTF technique. Then, maximum likelihood estimation using Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-HMMs is carried out to verify whether or not each detected event is an actual incident. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed method operates in real time and achieves high detection accuracy under simulated tunnel conditions.
