The experiment fields consisted of five plots as follows; 2, 4, and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ citrus skin in combination with starch sludge and pig manure mixing compost (CSSP), $4\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ fermented pig manure compost (FPMC) treated plot, and untreated control. Plant height and stem diameter were significantly increased by CSSP. Most of all, average tuber weight and tuber yield per plant were significantly increased in 4 and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plots compared to the other plots. Marketable tuber (>50 g fresh weight) yield were superior in order of 4 and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plot, $4\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ FPMC plot, and $2\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plot.
'Pungwonmi', a new sweetpotato variety, was developed for table use by Bioenergy Crop Research Institute, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2014. This variety was derived from the cross between 'Benisatsuma' and 'Luby3074' in 2006. The seedling and line selections were performed from 2007 to 2009, and preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2010 to 2011. The regional yield trials were conducted at five locations from 2012 to 2014, and it was named as 'Pungwonmi'. This variety has cordate leaf shape, and its leaves, stems, nodes, and petioles are green. Storage root of 'Pungwonmi' has an elliptical shape, red skin, and light orange flesh. 'Pungwonmi' was moderately resistant to fusarium wilt, and resistant to root-knot nematode. Dry matter content was 31.2%, and texture of steamed storage root was intermediate. Total sugar content of raw and steamed storage roots of 'Pungwonmi' was higher than that of 'Yulmi'. ${\beta}$-carotene content of 'Pungwonmi' was 9.1 mg/100g DW. Yield of marketable storage root over 50 g of 'Pungwonmi' was 24.3 MT/ha under the early season culture, which was 46% higher than that of 'Yulmi'. The number of marketable storage roots per plant was 2.8 and the average weight of marketable storage root was 156 g under the optimal and late season culture. Marketable storage root yield of 'Pungwonmi' was 24.1 MT/ha under the optimum and late season culture, which was 26% higher than that of 'Yulmi'. (Registration No. 6428).
This study was conducted to determine the optimum planting distance under rain-shielding condition for improving quality and productivity of squash by staking cultivation. The squashes were grown by 3 planting distances, such as 120${\times}$30, 120${\times}$40 and 120${\times}$50 cm during 3 months under non heat condition. The vine length, fresh weight and leaf area were reduced as planting distance was decreased until main branch was pinching. The first female flowering day and first fruit setting nodes were not different among treatments. The first fruit length and second fruit weight were increased in 120${\times}$50 cm planting distance, but the soluble solid contents were not different among treatments. In 120${\times}$30 cm plant distance, total yield was highest (6,510 kg/10a), but marketable yie이 was lowest. When the planting distance was between 120${\times}$40 cm and 120${\times}$50 cm, the marketable rate was similar (over 98%), but marketable yield was highest in 120${\times}$40 cm planting distance (5,012 kg/10a). The results of this study indicated that the optimum planting distance of staking cultivation in squash seemed to be 120${\times}$40cm.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of flooding on the quality and yield of an oriental melon. Waterlogging for four periods, 0(not flooded), 5, 10 or 15h, were applied to 30cm depth from the soil surface. The soluble solids content of fruit flesh measured at 7 days after waterlogging was 12.6 Brix in not-flooded plot, but it decreased by 4.7-5.6 Brix in plots flooded 5, 10 or 15h, respectively. Difference in fruit hardness between the no-flooded and 5h-flooded plots was not observed, while a significant decrease in fruit hardness was observed in 10 or 15 h-flooded plots at 7 days after waterlogging. Decrease in fruit hardness in all plots except control plot was observed at 13 days after waterlogging. The percent decayed fruits at 7 days after waterlogging was not observed, but at 13 days after waterlogging it gradually increased as duration of flooding increased. The incidence of downy or powdery mildews increased is significantly in plots flooded for 5, 10 or 15h as compared to the not-flooded control. However, population of cotton caterpillar decreased in the flooded plots. Marketable fruits yield per 10a was 616.2kg in no-flooded plot, but it decreased by 33%, 45% and 66%, respectively, in plots flooded for 5, 10 or 15h. The waterlogging during fruit enlargement stage significantly deteriorated fruit quality and decreased marketable fruit yield.
To reduce the injury by continuous cropping of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), the farmer's plant and virus-free plant were cultivated with the density of $70{\times}25cm$ (June 10, 2011) in continuous cropping soil (CCS) and subsoiling reversion soil (SRS). Fertilizer was applied at the rates of 55-63-156 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O$) and 10 $ton\;ha^{-1}$ of cattle manure in CCS, and it was applied the 50% increased cattle manure compost and nitrogen in DRS. Symptoms of viral infection were revealed in the farmer's plant at 30 days after planting, but there were no symptoms in virus-free plant. The yield of virus-free plant was more increased 15% and 10.5% than that of farmer's plant in DRS and CCS, respectively. The yield of sweetpotato in SRS was more increased 8.8% and 3.2% in farmer's plant and virus-free plant compared to CCS, respectively. In DRS, the rate of marketable tuber of virus-free plant was increased by 80% compared to the farmer's plant (60.1%). The virus-free plant was produced the tuber with more brilliant peel color and well-formed shape compared to the farmer's plant. The increased yield of virus-free plant and in SRS soil condition showed a positive relationship (p=0.05) with the number of leaf per plant at 30 days and the number of branch per plant at 120 days after planting. The results showed that the early growth after planting was very important for the development of storage root. Therefore, the deep-subsoil reversion and cultivation of virus-free plant could be reduced the injury by continuous cropping of sweet potato, and increased farm income.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of seedling age and irrigation set point on the growth and yield of white spined cucumber cv Sharp-1. Leaf area, number of lateral vines and root weight measured 70 days after planting were the greatest in 30 day-old seedling treatment. Inorganic element content measured 30 days after planting was the greatest in 30 day-old seedling treatment. Total and marketable yields were greater in 30 day-old seedlings than those of 20 or 40 day-old seedlings. The early yield was the least in 20 day-old seedlings. 40-day old seedlings lost vigor quickly. No significant differences in growth and yield observed as affected by irrigation set point.
As apple trees mature, it is important to maintain good light distribution within the canopy to produce marketable fruits. Tree thinning is the selective removal of a proportion of trees growing in the orchard to provide more growing space and a good light environment for the remaining trees. This study was conducted over 3 years (14-16 years after planting) to investigate the influence of tree thinning on vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality, and blooming in the 14 years old slender spindle 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees planted with the tree space of 3.2×1.2 m. The trees were placed in a control group (no thinning; 260 trees per 10 a) or a tree thinning group (thinned 50% of the control; 130 trees per 10 a). The tree thinning successfully improved light penetration, yield per tree, fruit red color, and yield efficiency for 3 years, and the tree thinning controlled the occurrence of biennial bearing. However, tree thinning significantly decreased accumulated yield per 10 a compared with the control. The vegetative growth, yield per tree, soluble solid contents, and blooming were not clear by the occurrence of biennial bearing in the control. These results indicated that tree thinning was a good method for improving light penetration and preventing biennial bearing in the old 'Fuji'/M.9 high-density apple orchards.
A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20kg/10a of nitrogen (N) under the transparent P. E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Culm length, ear height, number of tillers increased and silking date was earlier by 1-2 days with increased N level. Leaf area index of main culm at harvest increased with increased N level. Marketable ears were divided into two classes according to the whole sale market price; the frist grade of which husked ear weight over 150g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g). Average length, thickness, and weight of both grades of marketable ears were not different among the N levels. The proportion of the first grade increased with increased N level. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with increased N level. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per l0a. The number and weight of marketable ears were underestimated at high N levels compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover ranged 740-963kg/10a and increased with increased N level with 20. 8-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 11.8-15.0%, but it was not related to N level. N concentration in ear was similar but that in stover increased with increased N level. Total N uptake increased but N recovery decreased with increased N level.
Small-sized tuber of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) is more preferred by Korean consumers, because it is convenient to eat with hands, and can easily be steamed or roasted in small pan as a healthy snack for a small family. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of high-density plantings and harvesting times on production of smallsized tuber (50~200 g). Four varieties ('Annobeny', 'Daeyumi', 'Shinzami', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were planted in 2-row zigzag high-density planting ($75{\times}30cm$, A; $75{\times}25cm$, B) and 1-row planting ($75{\times}25cm$, control) covered with black vinyl film on May 23th, 2014. Marketable yields and small-sized tuber yields were compared between 120- and 150-day harvesting. Vine length and fresh weight per plant were significantly decreased in 2-row planting A and B plots compared to the control at 120 days after planting. Weight of tuber per plant, mean weight of tuber and number of tuber per plant were significantly decreased in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots than in the control. Marketable yields per 10a were increased by 17% ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 8% ($2.6ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$), and those were largely increased by 29% ($4.0ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 26% ($3.9ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 150-day harvesting than in the control ($3.1ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). Proportions of small size tuber (50~200 g) were increased by about 65% in 150-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control (55.3%). Small-size tuber yield and marketable yield were highly increased in 150-day harvesting of 2-row zigzag high-density planting A ($75{\times}30cm$).

In 2006, the effect of soil pH adjustment on control of common scab of potato caused by Streptomyces spp. was evaluated in the field. Soil with an original pH 5.7 was treated with sulfur of 42 kg/10a and calcium hydroxide of 81.6 kg/10a and 184.5 kg/10a to adjust pH 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5, respectively. Additionally, the effect of gypsum (522 kg/10a) on soil pH and disease severity was examined. The soil pH of sulfur treatment plot was continuously declined from 5.13 at tuber initiation time to 5.01 at harvest. The disease severity of sulfur treatment plot was relatively low (22.8%) and the marketable yield of that was high (90.5%). By contrast, the soil pHs treated with calcium hydroxide (81.6 kg/10a and 184.5 kg/10a) were increased (pH 6.06 and 6.49, respectively) at harvest. In addition, calcium hydroxide treatment plots showed higher disease severities (51.0% and 61.1%), and lower marketable yields (55.7% and 37.0%). Meanwhile, the soil pH of gypsum treatment plot was not changed until harvest, and the disease severity and the marketable yield were not significantly different from those of control. The effect of crop rotation was also evaluated with four crops such as welsh onion, soybean, corn and Chinese cabbage. These crops were planted in the infested field from 2005 to 2007, and potatoes were planted in the same field in 2008. The disease severities of potatoes produced after rotations with welsh onion, soybean, corn and Chinese cabbage for 3 years were 13.1%, 16.7%, 28.9% and 30.2%, respectively. However, the disease severity of 73.1% was shown in continuous cropping of potato for 3 years. In addition, similar effects were exhibited in the marketable yield. These results demonstrate that the adjustment of soil pH and crop rotation might be very useful tools to control common scab of potato.
