Growth and Yield Variations among Generations in Field Cultivation of Virus-free Sweet Potato Plants (고구마 바이러스 무병묘의 세대간 생육 및 수량 변이)

  • This work was conducted to investigate the variation of growth and yield among three generations ($TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$) in the field cultivation of virus-free sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) plants. Virus-free generations of three cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shinhwangmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultivated with $75{\times}25cm$ planting density on May 20th, covered with black vinyl film. At 30 days after planting, vine growth in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant, and vine length in $TC_0$ showed the highest growth among treatments. At harvesting time after 120 days, vine diameter, number of node, and number of branch in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ were more increased than farmer's plant, but were not statistically significant. Fresh weight of shoot in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant, but was not statistically significant among generations or cultivars. Number of tuber per plant and mean weight of tuber in $TC_0$ and $TC_1$ showed significant increasement, but that in $TC_2$ did not show significant difference as compared to the farmer's plant. Weight of tuber per plant in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant. Marketable yield, percentage of marketable tuber, and percentage of small tuber (40 to 200g) in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant. The large tuber over 300g showed the lowest percentage in $TC_0$. Marketable yield in $TC_2$ was significantly decreased as compared to $TC_0$, and was not significantly different as compared to the farmer's plant. Marketable yield in 'Matnami' was highest among cultivars. From this results, Farmers are required to renew every three years to maintain the yield and quality of virus-free plants. However, the exchange period of virus-free plants is desirable to renew every 2 or 3 years according to the degree of virus reinfection.

Utilization of ventilation Pipe to Decrease Commondity Temperature and Rot of Soybean Sprouts (환기봉을 이용한 재배용기 내부 콩나물 품온 저하 및 부패 경감)

  • The practicality of utilizing ventilation pipe to enhance soybean sprout productivity by lowering commodity temperature and resultant sprout rot was tested. The ventilation pipes with holes for aeration were vertically installed inside of a sprout cultivation container prior to adding soaked soybean seeds. The time-series changes in sprout commodity temperature and resultant growth, yield, marketable sprout percentage, and rot of soybean sprouts were measured. The ventilation pipes effectively decreased sprout commodity decreased sprout commodity temperature by 4.7$^{\circ}C$. Ventilation pipes also enhanced sprout yield and marketable sprout percentage by 3.9% and 4.0%, respectively, while reducing sprout rot by 4.1%. In conclusion, ventilation pipe seems a practical and effective non-chemical method to enhance the productivity of soybean sprouts.

Effects of Diffused Light Materials on Marketable Yield and Quality of Sunlight Dried Red Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Plastic Film House (비닐하우스 이용 태양초 생산시 산광 재료가 상품 수량과 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of diffused light materials on marketable yield and quality of sunlight dried red pepper in plastic film house. The after ripening methods were composed of 3 treatments; using electric bulk dryer (Bulk), sealing house (House), and PE sealing. The diffused light materials were control, tent, shading 35% (Shading net), white polypropylene (PP (white)), and black polypropylene (PP (Black)). The marketable yield was high in order of Bulk as 300 g, House as 275 g, and PE sealing as 112 g. The redness of PE sealing was the highest as 17.85 and that of Bulk was the lowest as 10.65. There was significant difference in redness among the treatments. The moisture content of red pepper was the most rapidly reduced in control, and was the most slowly reduced in Shading net treatment. The marketable yield index was the higher in PP (white) as 114% than control. The redness had a significant difference in PP (Black) and tent compared to the other treatments. The capsaicin content showed the highest as $160mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ in PP (white) treatment. Conclusively, the most effective method for sunlight drying red pepper was House with PP (White) treatment. It delayed drying for 2 days but increased marketable yield at 114% than control when sunlight dried red pepper in plastic house. Our results also provided an optimized method for improvement of drying red pepper with sunlight, and will be useful for further drying red pepper research.

Development of n Hydroponic Technique for Fruit Vegetables Using Synthetic Fiber Medium (합성섬유 배지를 이용한 과채류 수경재배 기술 개발)

  • This study was carried out to develop a novel hydroponic medium far fruit vegetable crops by using waste synthetic fibers. In physical analysis of the synthetic fiber medium (SFM), the bulk density and percent solid phase were lower, while the porosity and water content were greater in comparison with the rockwool slab. The SFM had pH of 6.5 and EC of $0.03dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ both of which are similar to those of the rockwool slab. The CEC of 0.39me/100mL of the SFM was lower than compared with 3.29me/100mL of the rockwool slab. However, concentrations K, Ca, Mg and Na were slightly higher in the SFM than those in the rockwool slab. The 'Momotaro' tomato crop in the SFM gave comparable plant height, stem diameter, days to first flowering, fruit weight and percent marketable yield as the rockwool slab. In the SFM and in the rockwool slab, mean fiuit weight were 182g and 181g, percent marketable yield were $93.8\%$ and $92.0\%$, respectively. The marketable yield per 10a in the SFM was 12,799 kg, which was $97\%$ of that in the rockwool slab. Growth parameters such as leaf length and width, leaf number, stem diameter and chlorophyll content of an exportable cucumber crop grown in the SFM and the rockwool slab were not different. Fruit weight was greater in the rockwool slab, while percent marketable yield was greater in the SFM. The marketable fruit yield per 10a of 5,062kg in the SFM was $2\%$ greater than that in the rockwool slab. $NO_3$ concentration in nutrient solution during the crop cultivation was higher in the SFM than in the rockwool slab, while concentrations $NH_4$, K, Ca, Mg and $SO_4$ were not different between the two media.

Effects of Foliar Application of Potassium Phosphate $(KH_2PO_4)$ on the Enhancement of Marketable Fruit Yields of Fresh Tomato (칼륨 엽면처리가 시설토마토 과실의 상품성 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to determine the optimum concentration of potassium for the foliar application, and its application stage to increase the production of marketable sized tomato. For this purpose, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 percent of potassium phosphate $(KH_2PO_4)$ were applied in the leaves of tomatoes by the stage of flowering, fruit setting and fruit development. The control plants were applied with distilled water. The results showed that foliar application with 0.5 percent of potassium phosphate increased the proportion of medium sized fruit of the products by 29.5 percent compared to the controlled plants, which is highest in the treatments. The foliar application of 0.5 percent of potassium phosphate at the fruit setting stage increased the yield of marketable sized fruit by 5.9 percent compared to the controlled plants.

Effect of Shoot Training Method on Quality and Yield of 'Sinsakigake-2' and 'Shishito' Peppers (정지방법에 따른 '신사기가께2호'와 '시시도우' 고추의 품질과 수량)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of shoot training method on the plant growth and fruit quality and yield of 'Sinsakigake-2' and 'Shishito' peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) grown in the glasshouse. Plants were either left untrained as control or trained at the third node leaving two or four shoots per plant. The untrained control plants had no pruning and therefore had all the lateral branches. The growth was enhanced in plants with two trained shoots in both cultivars. Fruit length and width, fruit weight, and pericarp thickness were not affected by the number of shoots trained. However, the percent marketable fruits was the highest in plants with two trained shoots, and the number of marketable fruits per plant was the highest in plants with four trained shoots. Marketable yield in plants with four trained shoots increased 15% in 'Sinsakigake-2' and 5% in 'Shishito' as compared to that of the control. Results of this study showed that yield and quality of pepper fruits were promoted by training with four shoots and the effect was more pronounced in 'Sinsakigake-2' than 'Shishito' pepper.

Effect of Fruit Thinning and Foliar Fertilization under the Low Light Intensity in Oriental Melon(Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa MAKINO) (저광도 조건시 참외의 적과와 엽면시비 효과)

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the method of preventing decrease in the marketable yield of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa MAKINO) under low light intensity. By maintaining low light of 400 $\mu$mol$.$m$^{[-10]}$ 2$.$S$^{-1}$ from 10 days after fruit set to fruit enlargement period, the photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll contents of leaf were reduced. Leaves which had no urea application showed largely decreased photosynthetic rate The content of soluble solids was lower$.$ in the low light than natural light treatment. Regardless of foliar application of urea, % fermentation fruits was under 4% in the natural light treatment and over 10% in the low light treatment. The less the fruit thinning, the greater was % fermentation fruits under low light condition. The % fermentation fruits were 39% and 40% in no fruit thinning treatment. The harvest was delayed under low light condition regardless of foliar fertilization. As the number of thinned fruits was decreased, the harvest time was delayed more. Marketable yield per plant sharply decreased under low light intensity. Compared with natural light, the yield under low light treatment was 16∼34%. The treatment fertilized with 0.5% urea on leaf had 34% greater harvest index of marketable yield than other treatments. In conclusion, when the long low light condition from 10th day after fruiting was forecasted, thinning two fruits out of six fruits and two times foliar fertilization with 0.5% urea should be applied.
