A Study on the Performance Comparison of Container Terminal Operators in Busan Port and Shanghai Port (부산항과 상하이항 컨테이너 터미널 운영사의 경영성과 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the continuous increasement of the container cargoes, each container port market has been growing as well. Moreover, the competition among container terminal operators located in the same port is also growing in order to attract more container cargoes. This paper looked into the market structures, market conducts and market performances of container ports in Busan and Shanghai. The index which has been most widely used to measure market structure, the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), is computed by squaring each supplier's market share, then adding the squared shares. This paper estimated the market performance as profitability (PCM, ROA), growth (total TEU, rate of the increasement of TEU) and examined the effects of the HHI on the profitability and growth in a container terminal operators in Korea and China. The major findings of this study is that the market structure has effects on market performance in Busan port (total TEU) and Shanghai port (PCM, ROA and total TEU). As a result of analysing this study, market structure has an effect on market performance in Busan and Shanghai port, but the power of influence can be changed by market concentration index and various market conduct of companies.

A study on competition of hinterland in Zhejiang Province between Shanghai Port and Ningbo Port

  • Ningbo Port develops quickly in recent years and with the combination of Ningbo Port and Zhoushan Port, it becomes another important port in the Shanghai International Shipping center. Competition between the two biggest ports in this area can't be avoided. The goal of this paper is investigating the competence of port from two angles, which are spatial structure of the ports cluster and neighboring ports' attraction to cargoes at conjunct hinterlands. The paper firstly uses the HHI index model and shift-share method to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the data of container throughputs of ports in the shipping center, in order that investigates the spatial structure of ports cluster. Basing on above researches, the paper employs the location quotient to study Shanghai port and Ningbo port's hinterland distributions at Zhejiang province. The conclusion of this study:(I)the ports cluster of the Shanghai International Shipping Center is highly centralized, and undergoes a porcess of first centralization then decentralization since the mid of 90s, last century. (2)Hinterlands of Shanghai port includes: Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou and Quzhou districts; Hinterlands of Ningbo port includes: Ningbo, Taizhou and Zhoushan districts.

Strategies to Attract Transshipment Container Cargoes among Main Competitive Ports in North (East Asian Region) (동북아 경쟁항만간의 환적화물 유치전략 (부산항을 중심으로))

  • Competition to attract the increasing container cargoes of North China and the West Japan in North-East Asia region is fairly intensed in recent days between the main ports of Korea, China, and Japan. Inducing a new container cargo make those countries possible to invest enormous fund to mordernize its port facilities, as well as to improve efficiency in Port operation and management. In this situation, Strategy to attract transshipment cargoes is of the immediate necessity, This study, therefore, aims to establish the feasible strategies to attract transshipment container cargoes in the North-East Asian region by empirical analysis, he major output of the research is as follows : First, Busan Port to attract transshipment cargoes is required to adjust port tariff and free storage period with flexibility for liner shipping companies and freight forwarder. Second, Price-Demand function of Busan port between main competitive ports in North-East Asian region that is derived from strategies to attract transshipment cargoes, helps marketing manager to fix scientifically port price as understanding the change of demand quantity.

A Study on Busan Port's Marketing Target for Attracting Transshipment Cargo from Japan (일본 환적화물 유치를 위한 부산항 마케팅 타겟 선정 연구 - 일본 서안 항만을 중심으로 -)

  • The growth of T/S cargoes maintained a highly upward trend by an increase of throughputs of North Chinese ports in the early 2000s. Recently, however, it has fallen dramatically due to large developmental projects of infrastructures for North Chinese ports. Despite this situation, an increase rate of T/S cargoes between Korean and Japanese ports is showing relatively high by 8 to 9 percent. Therefore this study pursues to choose objectives for marketing target of a total of 23 ports in the west of Japan by analyzing factors like a trade characteristics with Busan ports, an increase rate, a market share and a fluctuation rate of throughputs. The result of this study shows that Moji, Niigata, Naha, Shimonoseki and Kanazawa port are selected as the objectives for core marketing and Hakata, Akita, Tokuyama, Imari, Ishikari and Sakata port are chosen as ports for continuous marketing.

An Analysis of Transshipment Competitiveness of Container Cargoes in Incheon New Port (인천신항의 환적경쟁력 분석에 대한 연구)

  • This study is aimed at evaluating transshipment competitiveness of Incheon New Port which will open in 2013. For this reason, we used Conjoint Analysis(CA) for a methodology of this research as CA had been frequently adopted for empirical analysis of new container terminal in previous studies. We have provided the questionnaires to the stake holders of the port such as experts in Port Authority(PA), logistics companies, and terminal operators. The result showed that transshipment competitiveness of Incheon New Port was subordinate to transshipment costs and port costs of Busan and Shanghai. Overall, we hope this study could help draw up the policies on a New Port that will attract transshipment cargoes and set up marketing plan for an early settlement.
