  • One mg tar cigarettes represent a growing segment of the market, in various parts of the world but specially in the Far East. Cigarette design of ultra low tar cigarettes is not easy to manage: a simple extension of the techniques used in the design of the low tar segment will usually lead to tasteless cigarettes. A detailed analysis of the design of commercial ultra low tar cigarettes in different countries shows that no 《dominant design》 has yet been adopted. Blend composition, blend density, filter design, degree of filter ventilation all vary in a large range from cigarette brand to cigarette brand, and will influence the puff number, the tar concentration in each puff and ultimately the taste. We will report and comment on the detailed analysis of 17 commercial brands of ultra low tar cigarettes. We will then review the specific influence of tobacco chemical composition, introduction of reconstituted tobacco, influence of cigarette paper characteristics, selection of filter ventilation components on the burn characteristics and tar delivery; to conclude that the commercial success of an ultra low tar cigarette is linked to a very delicate balance between this techniques and... good marking of course!

  • We have developed a serious game for the elderly named 'Paldokangsan 2' in 2012 as a next version of 'Paldokangsan 1'. 'Paldokangsan 1' was a walking game for two people using controllers of armrests and footboards with PC. 'Paldokangsan 2' had additional purpose to assist cognitive, physical, and psychological functions of the elderly. Especially, walking activity was implemented in a way that a player walks around the old traditional market place in 1970's while remembering and choosing healthy food to buy. We also developed two mini games for the elderly and people with functional disability with the similar purpose as 'Paldokangsan2'. 219 older adults (age$$\geq_-$$ 65) recruited from Asan city community center participated in the study. The result showed that the game play exerted positive effects on memory, concentration and vitality of the elderly.

  • The aim of present study is to investigated on the development of the functional doenjang possessing antioxidative and fibrinolytic activity. A strain, BH-23 showing antioxidative and fibrinolytic activity was isolated from traditionally doenjang, and then identified as Bacillus subtilis based on moophological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics, and named as Bacillus subtilis BH-23. The optimal pH level and temperature conditions were 5.0 and $40^{\circ}C$, NaCl concentration was grown well at 15% Antioxidative and fibrinolytic activity of Bacillus subtilis BH-23 was accoidance with growth conditions of the original state. By comparising with traditionally commercialized doenjang, it is prepared with Bacillus subtilis BH-23. The final results evaluated with positive elements rised above the surface such as color, taste and flavor without ammonia. Therefore, it is safe to assume, doenjang has strong market value in the food industry.

  • GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel produced by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen ($H_2$) is expected to be one of the environmental friendly biomass based alternatives and blended to petrodiesel. In this study, the characteristic of the fuel was analyzed by its concentration differences after blending petrodiesel in domestic market with different amounts of GTL fuel which produced from Shell. Gas chromatography shows that GTL fuel consists of longer paraffin chain than common diesel. GTL fuel showed a high flash point, distillation, kinematic viscosity, and derived cetane number. In addition, GTL fuel showed lower lubricity due to low sulfur content.

  • The analysis of hazard compounds, including naphthalene, biphenyls (BP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP), was conducted from the wooden kitchenwares and sanitory produce. Fifty samples of that wooden products in the local market were purchased for the study. All the samples were extracted by benzene and n-heptane, followed by the analysis through GC-MSD. As a result, neither naphthalene nor diethyl phthalate were found, however, trace amount of biphenyls were detected on all the samples ranged from 0.1 to 3.1 ppm. Biphenyls also contained both in the imported and the domestic of White Birch wood, as 0.25 ppm and 0.34 ppm, respectively. The concentration of biphenyls reduced with the process of the original woods, and especially the detection range was relatively low compared with the permission one of apples (110 ppm). The results suggested that biphenyls were contaminated into the product not by the addition doting the process of manufacture, but as the component itself in raw wood materials. Also, the content of the residual biphenyls were not suspected to give the harmful effects.

  • The colors of packaging of herbicides and non-selective herbicides on the market in Korea are defined as brown and red, respectively, according to the notification of RDA. The present study aimed to understand consumer's electroencephalographic (EEG) response when looking at brown and red colors of herbicide and non-selective herbicide packaging papers. The EEG cap was placed on the scalp of each participant (men and women, 10 to 20 years old) and white (control) - brown - white - red colors were sequentially displayed for 5 seconds using the computer monitor. The EEG was measured and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. For the brown color of the herbicide, men showed a decrease in concentration and a distracting response due to a decrease in the ratio of mid beta to theta (RMT) and the spectral edge of frequency (SEF90). In women, an increase in the ratio of SMR to theta (RSMT) and the spectral edge frequency 50% of the alpha (ASEF) was observed in different brain regions and these EEG changes may enhance the relaxation, stabilization and awakening states of the brain. For the red color of the non-selective herbicide, ASEF increased psychological stability in men. In women, a decrease in absolute high beta (AHB) may associate with a decrease in attention state of the brain. Overall data of the present study clearly revealed that the colors of two herbicides showed significantly different EEG response and gender difference.

  • Used in the ceramic tile market as a representative building material, relief ceramic tile is showing increased demand recently. Since ceramic tiles are manufactured through a sintering process at over 1,000 ℃ after uniaxial compression molding by loading granule powders into a mold, it is very important to secure the flowability of granular powders in a mold having a relief pattern. In this study, kaolin, silica, and feldspar are used as starting materials to prepare granule powders by a spray dryer process; the surface of the granule powders is subject to hydrophobic treatment with various concentrations of stearic acid. The effect on the flowability of the granular powder according to the change of stearic acid concentration is confirmed by measuring the angle of repose, tap density, and compressibility, and the occurrence of cracks in the green body produced in the mold with the relief pattern is observed. Then, the green body is sintered by a fast firing process, and the water absorption, flexural strength, and durability are evaluated. The surface treatment of the granule powders with stearic acid improves the flowability of the granule powders, leading to a dense microstructure of the sintered body. Finally, the hydrophobic treatment of the granule powders makes it possible to manufacture relief ceramic tiles having a flexural strength of 292 N/cm, a water absorption of 0.91 %, and excellent mechanical durability.

  • Swollen and painful extremities have been treated with herbal baths in attempts to alleviate the symptoms. A popular herbal bath used in China, contains a component called 'bone-penetrating herb' which is believed to facilitate the penetration of herbal substances across the skin to the swollen site, so swollen site, so that pain and swelling will be improved. A search from the Chinese pharmacopedia revealed that 22 different herbs have been traditionally used as 'bone-penetrating herb'. Five of these herbs were available in market and were chosen for experimental studies. Standard diffusion experiments were done to identify the most effective herb among the five, in the penetration facilitation. Glechoma longituba at a concentration of 20% was found to give the best results in the facilitation of Bromophenol blue diffusion across artificial and biological membranes. When compared with one commonly used diffusion facilitator, viz. azone, azone was found to be more effective than glechoma longituba. The encouraging observations support future studies on the basic science behind the use of herbal components as topical agents to treat pain and swelling.
