Block-based Self-organizing TDMA for Reliable VDES in SANETs

  • This paper proposes a block-based self-organizing time-division multiple access (BSO-TDMA) protocol for very high frequency (VHF) data exchange system (VDES) in shipborne ad-hoc networks (SANETs). The BSO-TDMA reduces the collisions caused by the simultaneous transmission of automatic identification system (AIS) messages by uniformly allocating channel resources using a block-wise frame. For this purpose, the BSO-TDMA includes two functional operations: (1) frame configuration and (2) slot allocation. The first operation consists of block division and block selection. A frame is divided into multiple blocks, each consisting of fixed-size subblocks, by using the reporting interval (RI) of the ship. Then, the ship selects one of the subblocks within a block by considering the number of occupied slots for each subblock. The second operation allocates the slots within the selected subblock for transmitting AIS messages. First, one of the unoccupied slots within the selected subblock is allocated for the periodic transmission of position reports. Next, to transmit various types of AIS messages, an unoccupied slot is randomly selected from candidate slots located around the previously allocated slot. Experimental simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of BSO-TDMA. The results show that BSO-TDMA has better performance than that of the existing SOTDMA.

Predicting Program Code Changes Using a CNN Model (CNN 모델을 이용한 프로그램 코드 변경 예측)

  • A software system is required to change during its life cycle due to various requirements such as adding functionalities, fixing bugs, and adjusting to new computing environments. Such program code modification should be considered as carefully as a new system development becase unexpected software errors could be introduced. In addition, when reusing open source programs, we can expect higher quality software if code changes of the open source program are predicted in advance. This paper proposes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based deep learning model to predict source code changes. In this paper, the prediction of code changes is considered as a kind of a binary classification problem in deep learning and labeled datasets are used for supervised learning. Java projects and code change logs are collected from GitHub for training and testing datasets. Software metrics are computed from the collected Java source code and they are used as input data for the proposed model to detect code changes. The performance of the proposed model has been measured by using evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, F1-score, and accuracy. The experimental results show the proposed CNN model has achieved 95% in terms of F1-Score and outperformed the multilayer percept-based DNN model whose F1-Score is 92%.

  • Reduced crew performance is frequently cited as a major causal factor in maritime accident causation. Although considerable research has been conducted on the hours of work undertaken by seafarers through interviews and the analysis of records, experimental studies to observe the effects of factors such as high workload, shift patterns, stress, sleep deprivation and disturbance on the cognitive performance of mariners have been limited. Other safety-critical transport industries, such as aviation and rail, have developed fatigue management tools to help manage the work patterns of their operators. Such a tool for mariners would assist shipboard crew, marine pilots and shore management in planning and improving work schedules. The overall aim of this paper is to determine a fatigue factor, which can be applied to human performance data, as part of a software program that calculates total cognitive performance. This program enables us to establish the levels of cognitive performance of a group of marine pilots to test a decision-making task based on radar information. This paper addresses one of the factors that may contribute to the determination of various fatigue factors: the effect of different work patterns on the cognitive performance of a marine pilot.

Physical Model Experiment for Estimating Wave Overtopping on a Vertical Seawall under Regular Wave Conditions for On-Site Measurements (현장 월파계측을 위한 규칙파 조건에서 직립식 호안의 월파량 추정에 관한 모형실험)

  • Apart from implementing hardware solutions like raising the crest freeboard of coastal structures to efficiently counter wave-overtopping, there is a simultaneous requirement for software-driven disaster mitigation strategies. These tactics involve the swift and accurate dissemination of wave-overtopping information to the inland regions of coastal zones, enabling the regulation of evacuation procedures and movement. In this study, a method was proposed to estimate wave-overtopping by utilizing the temporal variation of wave heights exceeding the structure's crown level, with the aim of developing an on-site wave measurement system for providing wave-overtopping information in the field. Laboratory model experiments were conducted on vertical seawall structures to measure wave-overtopping volumes and wave runup heights under different wave conditions and structural freeboard variations. By assuming that the velocity of water inundation on the top of the structure during wave-overtopping events is equivalent to the long-wave velocity, an overtopping discharge coefficient was introduced. This coefficient was utilized to estimate the rate of wave-overtopping based on the temporal changes in wave runup heights measured at the top of the structure. Upon reasonably calculating the overtopping discharge coefficient, it was verified that the estimation of wave-overtopping could be achieved solely based on the wave runup heights.

An Evaluation Technique for the Path-following Control Performance of Autonomous Surface Ships (자율운항선박의 항로추정성능 평가기법 개발에 관한 연구)

  • A series of studies on the development of autonomous surface ships have been promoted in domestic and foreign countries. One of the main technologies for the development of autonomous ships is path-following control, which is closely related to securing the safety of ships at sea. In this regard, the path-following performance of an autonomous ship should be first evaluated at the design stage. The main aim of this study was to develop a visual and quantitative evaluation method for the path-following control performance of an autonomous ship at the design stage. This evaluation technique was developed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based path-following control model together with a line-of-sight (LOS) guidance algorithm. CFD software was utilized to visualize waves around the ship, performing path-following control for visual evaluation. In addition, a quantitative evaluation was carried out using the difference between the desired and estimated yaw angles, as well as the distance difference between the planned and estimated trajectories. The results demonstrated that the ship experienced large deviations from the planned path near the waypoints while changing its course. It was also found that the fluid phenomena around the ship could be easily identified by visualizing the flow generated by the ship. It is expected that the evaluation method proposed in this study will contribute to the visual and quantitative evaluation of the path-following performance of autonomous ships at the design stage.

Empirical and Numerical Analyses of a Small Planing Ship Resistance using Longitudinal Center of Gravity Variations (경험식과 수치해석을 이용한 종방향 무게중심 변화에 따른 소형선박의 저항성능 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Small ships (<499 GT) constitute 46% of the existing ships, therefore, it can be concluded that they produce relatively high CO2 gas emissions. Operating in optimal trim conditions can reduce the resistance of the ship, which results in fewer greenhouse gases. An affordable way for trim optimization is to adjust the weight distribution to obtain an optimum longitudinal center of gravity (LCG). Therefore, in this study, the effect of LCG changes on the resistance of a small planing ship is studied using empirical and numerical analyses. The Savitsky method employing Maxsurf resistance and the STAR-CCM+ commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is used for the empirical and numerical analyses, respectively. Finally, the total resistance from the ship design process is compared to obtain the optimum LCG. To summarize, using numerical analysis, optimum LCG is achieved at the 46.2% length overall (LoA) at Froude Number 0.56, and 43.4% LoA at Froude Number 0.63, which provides a significant resistance reduction of 41.12 - 45.16% compared to the reference point at 29.2% LoA.

  • Our country is promoting the introduction of new means of transportation due to insufficient supply according to the existing demand of road traffic. Among them, manless light railroad transit is settled down as the most definite alternative. However, new traffic systems such as manless light railroad have certain difference between characteristics of hardware and software and subway system. Therefore, there will be many differences compared to the existing contingency system when accidents occur. Railway management organization has to establish railway contingency plan and acquire permission from the minister of the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs. However, as commercial transportation is available, a new traffic system also should establish contingency plan. Therefore, the establishment of systematic contingency plan is suggested in order to analyze characteristics of manless light railroad in the beginning of introduction and to make contingency response available.

  • Engine builders have separately developed and applied torsional, axial and structural vibration monitoring system on most marine engines. These systems displayed their results for engine or ship operation engineers and were not regularly stored at the hardware of computer. So, tile history and trend of various engine and hull vibrations was not supported for preventive maintenance and to protect the failure of these activity or function. The integrated vibration or stress monitoring system(EVAMOS : Engine/Rotor Analysis and monitoring System) in marine diesel engine, its machineries and hull have been developed by the dynamics laboratory of Mokpo Maritime University during last 3 years. This paper introduces tile design conception and ability of commercial software EVAMOS with field data on several actual tests.

  • This study covers exploration of seabed around Heuksando Island using hover drones. To do so, we inspected the terrain of the island and set autonomous flight waypoints on each area of the island's shores. Next, we designated seabed scan radius for drones. Then the drones fitted with laser sensor hover autonomously on their assigned area and acquire seabed data. Finally, we match the seabed data on all areas according to GPS. Our final goal is to make immersive VR maritime cultural map based on 『Jasan Urbo』.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective web service software platform for remote monitoring and control. In order to propose a system configuration that can check the object information on the web in real time to improve the performance of the web service, the object information reception module and the web viewer system are configured. As IoT devices grow, the environment becomes too complicated to identify and control the status of many devices. We have proposed that these problems be easily controlled in a web-based environment and current status information can be viewed in real time.
