  • In order to obtain and maintain competitive advantage, under rapidly changing maritime environment, liners should make efforts to reinforce their logistics service capabilities. Most of all, for this, shipping lines should accurately recognize and evaluate their logistics service attributes. In the present research, various logistics service attributes for ocean carriers were selected from previous studies and the observed data for 6 main service attributes were collected through a questionnaire survey to 31 maritime experts. Moreover, shipping lines' relative logistics service capabilities were measured by an additional survey process. The comparative gravity between core evaluation factors were measured by AHP technique and the relative capability levels of 2 Korean liners and 5 foreign shipping companies were assessed by utilizing a fuzzy model. The empirical result presents that Korean liners are superior at customer service capability but inferior at freight rate competitiveness. This research shows that Korean liners are ranked at high position for overall logistics service capabilities and focusing on the differentiation strategy but not on the cost related strategy.

  • In Korea's ship finance, due to the nature of pro-cyclical investment, the private sector's ship finance greatly shrinks during the shipping recession, and policy financial institutions take the lead in ship finance. Meanwhile, the government established the 「Strategy for the Realization of Shipping Industry Leader」 (June 29, '2) and set a development goal by 2030 through support such as securing new high-efficiency ships. To promote financial investment. However, investment in the shipping industry is not easy to induce due to risks and uncertain market conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to review tax benefits that can induce joint investment of investors at the government level. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a Korean version of tax lease scheme for ships in order to resolve the liquidity gap in the domestic ship finance market and successfully implement the five-year plan for reconstruction of shipping industry.

  • The 2008 global financial crisis was triggered by the Lehman Brothers crisis caused by the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States This crisis has had an impact on the globe's dry bulk shipping market by reducing dry bulk cargo volume. An oversupply of dry bulk carriers caused a serious recession in the globe's dry-bulk shipping industry and shipbuilding industry. In this situation, the Korean dry-bulk shipping companies were victims of the quagmire of a long recession since the global financial crisis and could not overcome this crisis. This condition forced them into severe financial risk Thus, it caused many shipping companies to file for bankruptcy. In this study, we classified Korean ocean-going dry-bulk shipping companies into two groups, that is, the solvent group and the insolvent group. We also separated the research period before and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Then we investigated the differences in the major financial ratios of the two groups by t-test and found that some financial ratios such as profitability ratios and growth ratios showed the difference between the two groups with statistical significance. The significance of this study is as follow. First, the shipping company management is also crucial for the systematic management of financial strength and business strategy, it is crucial to manage cargo which a high profitable freight. Second, the shipping company should be managed as a company with continued growth through efficient operation and management of ships.

  • Over the past fifty years, the share of the World's shipping fleet operating under open registry has grown from 4 % to almost half of the total tonnage. While there has been strong opposition based on the costs of maritime disasters and opposition both from the traditional maritime nations, which have suffered erosion of their fleets, and from labour unions, which point to worker exploitation, the shipping companies have found the greater operational and financial flexibility which accompanies open registry to be a considerable attraction The paper consists of seven sections. Section 1 explains the background and of the study. Section 2 reviews the characteristics and definition of FOC. Section 3 is to identify ship register categories and their competitive conditions. Section 4 tackles the emerging forces of globalisation-the advent of FOC. Section 5 deals with legal maritime framework. Section 6 tackles the current structure and characteristics of FOC vessels. Some concluding comments follow in the last section.

  • Colombo noticeably became the most economical gateway to the Indian subcontinent, in terms of cost as well as time. The Colombo Port Expansion Project (CPEP) started commencement with the purpose of accommodating mega ships, under the long-term strategies of making Colombo the hub of South Asia. In this context, the purpose of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between Indian ports' originated container traffic, and total transshipments of the port of Colombo, and also to identify the nature of the causality between the two variables, evaluating Granger causality test results. It finds unidirectional causality from total transshipments of Colombo to Indian ports' originated transshipments in the port of Colombo. It suggested that ongoing port expansion projects, opening up for new markets and attracting new shipping lines in the port of Colombo, have generated significant impact on Indian ports' container traffic, via the port of Colombo. Findings would be valuable for future forecasting of container traffic in Colombo port and the policy-making process in the port as well.

  • Under the competitive environment of shipping industry, the improvement of the quality of shipping service could be one of the most important factors to be considered in the recent shipping industry. However, there has been little study on the clear concept of the service quality in the shipping so far. The subject of this study is to define the concept of the service quality in the shipping by way of making investigation into the related precedent literatures studied. The quality of service is recognized in general as a degree of gap between the customer's expectation and the perception. Therefore the service quality of shipping could be measured by evaluating the gaps between shipper's expectation and performance of shipping service. If the determinants of the service quality in the shipping are proved, and the discrepancies of expectations and perception between the shipping company and the shipper could be clarified, such a result would be an useful help to establish marketing strategy.
