A Study on the Traffic Stream and Navigational Characteristics at the Adjacent Sea Area of Busan Central Wharf (부산 중앙부두 주변 해역의 교통 흐름 및 통항 특성에 관한 연구)

  • At the adjacent sea area of Busan Central Wharf, a variety of vessels, such as middle-large passenger ships, small fast sailing ships, container ships, cargo ships and working ships as well as small miscellaneous vessels are freely sailing comparatively without special steering and sailing Rules and marine traffic control because exclusive wharfs in accord with their purpose and use have been arranged in each wharf. In this research, we analyzed traffic stream and navigational characteristics of main traffic route based on statistics and distribution of tracks by ship's type and tonnage of the passing vessels after conducting marine traffic survey twice using exclusive software by targeting the sea area during the period of time. We examined the traffic safety of the passing vessels by classifying the sea area by each function based on the analysis about this traffic situation, and analyzing the effect by designating 'Buknea passage'. We also studied the plan for the effective rearrangement of Central Wharf considering basically the traffic safety oif arrival and departure in a point if view of navigators.

A Prediction of Marine Traffic Volume using Artificial Neural Network and Time Series Analysis (인공신경망과 시계열 분석을 이용한 해상교통량 예측)

  • Unlike the existing regression analysis, this study anticipated future marine traffic volume using time series analysis and artificial neural network model. Especially, it tried to anticipate future marine traffic volume by applying predictive value through time series analysis on artificial neural network model as an additional input variable. This study used monthly observed values of Incheon port from 1996 to 2013. In order for the verification of the forecasting of the model, value for 2013 is anticipated from the built model with observed values from 1996 to 2012 and a proper model is decided by comparing with the actual observed values. Marine traffic volume of Incheon port showed more traffic than average for May and November by 5.9 % and 4.5 % respectably, and January and August showed less traffic than average by 8.6 % and 4.7 % in 2015. Thus, it is found that Incheon port has difference in monthly traffic volume according to the season. This study can be utilized as a basis to reflect the characteristics of traffic according to the season when investigating marine traffic field observation.

  • Marine environment has been polluted and damaged by many sources such as industrial waste, natural seepage, oil spill and offshore production etc. Among them, oil spill from oil tankers is one of most harmful sources to marine lives as its input amount is huge at a limited area for short period. In Korea, the port of Yeosu is known to be very vulnerable to oil spill with large amount of petroleum transported across the harbour. In this regards, the author analyzed and reviewed marine environment and appropriate response to marine oil spill at this area. For these purposes, oceanographic and meteorologic features as well as regional characteristics of harbor facilities, shipping routes, marine traffic and fisheries were investigated, also traffic densities were analyzed in order to check marine accident probabilities making direct observations for 72 hours visual1y and by portable radar.

  • In recent years, the maritime traffic environment has been changing in various ways, and the traffic volume has been increasing constantly. Accordingly, the requirements for maritime traffic analysis have become diversified. To this end, traffic characteristics must first be analyzed using vessel trajectory data. However, as the conventional method is mostly manual, it requires a considerable amount of time and effort, and errors may occur during data processing. In addition, ensuring the reliability of the analysis results is difficult, because this method considers the subjective opinion of analysts. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an automated method of traffic network generation for maritime traffic analysis. In the experiment, spatiotemporal features are analyzed using data collected at Mokpo Harbor over six months. The proposed method can automatically generate a traffic network reflecting the traffic characteristics of the experimental area. In addition, it can be applied to a large amount of trajectory data. Finally, as the spatiotemporal characteristics can be analyzed using the traffic network, the proposed method is expected to be used in various maritime traffic analyses.

  • The high tech marine transportation infrastructure is an innovative transportation infrastructure that may be able to secure a safe transportation environment as well as efficient operation by connecting up-to-date skills including a broad range of wire and wireless communication-based information, control and electronics technologies. When integrated into the marine transportation infrastructure by the standard requirements, these standard technologies help monitoring and managing navigational aids. This paper defined a concept of middleware in the marine traffic management systems which gives characteristics of system independency, scalability, extensibility, and researches a functionality of the middleware and a software block of the middleware.

A Study on Evaluation of Marine Traffic Congestion based on Survey Research in Major Port (주요항만의 실측조사 기반 해상교통혼잡도 평가 연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed AIS measured data for ten days by selecting the four main ports with many ships arriving in the national ports. The peak time congestion of the main ports, calculated by survey research, was about 3.8-5.7 times higher than the hourly average congestion. This is very different from the results of the advanced research, evaluating the marine traffic congestion of the Ulsan main port based on the existing Port-MIS statistical data, which showed a peak time congestion of about 1.7 times higher than the hourly average. This identifies the problem of distorting the traffic characteristics of the current passage. Therefore, in order to evaluate marine traffic congestion, it would be more appropriate to calculate it based on survey research, rather than Port-MIS statistical data.

A Study on Maritime Traffic Characteristics according to Water Time(Multte) (물때에 따른 해상교통특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study seeks to analyze ships traffic characteristics according to water time in order to provide the necessary data for efficient traffic management development. To analyze maritime traffic volume according to water time, 1 year amount of solar calendar data were converted into lunar calendar, and then applied the traditional water time system of West Sea by using AIS(Automatic Identification System) observation data gathered in Mokpo port for a year of 2013. As a result, it was found herein that the number of outbound ships was larger on the $2^{nd}-3^{nd}$ water times than the $7^{th}$ water times by 23-24 %. And the number of inbound ships was higher on the $12^{th}-13^{th}$ water times than the $9^{th}$ water time by 29-33 %. The hourly variation index of inbound and outbound ships according to time, in particular, was found to change in the form of sine function model. This study is expected to serve as a necessary basic material for development of maritime traffic management according to water time.

Study on the Roll Motion of Moored Ships Using Marine Traffic Characteristics (해상교통특성과 계류중인 선박의 Roll 동요량에 관한 연구)

  • When a berth is built close to a fairway, a moored vessel will be affected by the ship waves generated by navigating vessels. In this study, a portable measurement system was developed to measure the roll motion of an actual vessel, and the results were compared with simulation results. The simulation results showed that the roll motion satisfies the loading safety criteria. However, the actual results of the vessel, did not satisfy the criteria in some cases. In this study, 18 cases that did not satisfy the loading safety criteria were analyzed. Among these cases, three cases were affected by a different time zone of the remaining 15 cases, 11 cases (73.3%) were observed to be consistent with arrival times of passenger ships of more than 10,000GT sailing between in Mokpo and Jeju. The results of this study can be used to reflect marine traffic characteristics in the assessment of loading safety, which can increase the reliability of results of the loading safety assessment of ships.

A Study on Improvement of Criteria for Mooring Safety Assessment in Single Point Mooring

  • The recent increase in crude oil trading has led to an increase in the workings of SPM for crude oil carriers. VLCCs generally encounter difficulty entering port due to limitations in terms of sea depth and maneuverability. The SPM is a system that allows mooring to the buoy located in the outer sea for such vessels. However, the buoy is more affected by relatively external forces because of their of shore location. Therefore, the safety assessment of SPM is particularly important as it can lead to large oil pollution disasters in the event of SPM accidents. Despite this, in the implementation of the Marine Traffic Safety Audit Scheme in Korea, there exists no guidance for SPM. In this study, a SPM mooring safety assessment is performed using OPTIMOOR, a numerical analysis program, so as to understand the mooring characteristics of SPM. As a result, it is confirmed that the tension of mooring lines and hull movement in the SPM are greatly affected by the encounter angles with external forces. In addition, it is found that the maximum tension of the mooring line is elevated as the water depth becomes shallower through sensitivity analysis. According to SPM characteristics, which has a large influence on the encounter angle, this study has proposed an amendment to setting criteria in the implementation of the Maritime Traffic Safety Audit Scheme which could improve the reliability and accuracy of mooring safety assessments.
