In the present study, the estrogenic activity and anti-osteoclastogenic activity of the Myelophycus simplex extract were evaluated using T47D-Kbluc cells and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs). As a result of the measurement of the estrogenic activity in the T47D-Kbluc cell line, the Myelophycus simplex extract showed increased estrogenic activity in a dose-dependent manner in association with its concentration. To confirm the regulatory effect of the Myelophycus simplex extract on the estrogen-responsive gene, the Myelophycus simplex extract showed a similar tendency to estradiol: the expression of estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) was significantly decreased while the expression of estrogen receptor 2 (ESR2) was increased. Furthermore, the Myelophycus simplex extract exhibited an inhibitory effect on osteoclast differentiation. In conclusion, these Myelophycus simplex extracts might be regarded as candidates for further studies or the development of functional food products or medicine to prevent or avoid postmenopausal symptoms for women.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory disease due to wear caused by the continuous use of cartilage. Although many drugs for treating OA are being studied, they have side effects, such as digestive disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Glucosamine, a drug derived from natural products, is known to be less effective. Therefore, the marine organism, Sargassum fulvellum, was studied to determine whether it contains substances with a chondroprotective effect on the inflammatory response of chondrocytes induced by interleukin-1β (IL-1β). A 30% ethanol extract of S. fulvellum (SF30%EtOH) has therapeutic and few side effects. We first confirmed the presence of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which is expressed during inflammatory reactions. We then examined the expression of collagen type II, which is the main component of the extracellular matrix and cartilage. Finally, the expression of extracellular matrix degrading enzymes, MMPs and ADAMTS-4 and -5, was confirmed. The results showed that SF30%EtOH reduced the expression levels of NO, iNOS, MMPs, and ADAMT-4 and -5, and increased the expression level of collagen type II in chondrocytes induced with IL-1β. Therefore, SF30%EtOH has a chondroprotective effect against inflammation, indicating its potential use for the prevention and treatment of OA.

"In summary, the freezing facilitty manufacturing industry has a bright prospects for further development. So followings are recommended: 1) The import restriction policy should be continued to expand the demand for the 10callT manufactured facilities, 2) Training of local people and import of advanced technologies should be encouraged 3) The capacities of the local manufacturing industry should be expanded to meet the: increasing demand for the facilities, 4) Further incentives should be affered to the freezing & cold storage sector for the repla¬cement of the worm-out facilities 5) The marketing channel of marine products should be reorganized into ""cold-chain system"" by providing a legislative supports."

As a previous step for the development of immunostimulating substance from marine natural products the two new lectins, MLA-II and MLA-III, have been isolated and purified from the hemolymph of Meretrix lusoria in addition to the previously reported MLA-I. The new lectins molecules were characterized as pure by electrophoretic studies.

This study determine the influence of the quality and brand factor of fish paste on the customer preferences with the aim of promoting marine products in the Busan region and especially of expandong the base of the fish paste market. A sample survey was conducted to analyze the customers among Busan citizens who purchase fish paste. The result showed that the quality and brand factor of fish paste have a significantly positive (+) influence on the customers' preferences.
