  • Ocean noise may be used for monitoring wind speed and rainfall rate on the sea surface, as well as for tracking whales' migration routes. In particular, low-frequency ocean noise has recently been of concern with relation to the behavior of marine mammals. Low-frequency ocean noise has been increasing over the past few decades due to increase of ship traffic and offshore oil industry activities. Mechanical noise such as flow noise and cable strumming noise may be induced if low-frequency ocean noise is measured by cabled traditional hydrophone in high current areas. To successfully measure low-frequency ocean noise in a shallow water environment with strong current, we developed a self-recording hydrophone. This paper describes the main configurations of the self-recording hydrophone and presents some results on measured data.

  • Low frequency exhaust noise of marine diesel engine is one of the most important noise sources in vessels. However, conventional absorptive silencers are ineffective to control exhaust noise because of low absorption in the low frequency range. In the paper, exhaust noise control of marine diesel engine was studied by using the hybrid silencer, which was composed of virtually divided array of concentric hole-cavity resonators and conventional absorptive silencer. A series of tests including field tests were performed to investigate the acoustic performance of the hybrid silencer. Consequently, its high performance of 5${\sim}$10 dB noise reduction in the low frequency range was confirmed and it is expected to be very helpful in reducing the exhaust noise of marine diesel engine.

  • Underwater noise produced by ships has been becoming an increasing issue. A dominantly contributing noise source is a ship propeller. Therefore, it is important to predict the propeller noise at the propeller design stages. This study applied the acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams equation for the prediction of the marine propeller BPF noise. A marine propeller BPF noise is investigated experimentally as well as numerically. Propeller BPF noise measurement and propeller cavitation observation tests are performed in the KRISO medium size cavitation tunnel. Numerical prediction schemes of marine propeller BPF noise are presented together with the noise measurement method. Propeller BPF noise predictions and experiments are performed under the various propeller operating conditions including non-cavitating and caveating conditions. Numerical and experimental results are compared and analyzed. It is shown that numerical prediction results are generally in good agreement with the measured data.

  • Noise externalities are a ubiquitous problem in modern societies. Research to estimate damages and potential efficient solutions therefore is important for addressing such problems. The results of a hedonic property model show that noise has a statistically significant and quantitatively important negative effect on property values. The key results for the best model show that damages (in year 2000 dollars) are - $5000 ${\ast}$ (ln dB), where dB is noise measured in decibels, allowing for the influence of other factors. Because ln(dB) is a strictly concave funaion, the "noise damage function"exhibits diminishing marginal effects with noise.

  • Seismic data is often contaminated with high-energy, spatially aliased noise, which has proven impractical to attenuate using Fourier techniques. Wavelet filtering, however, has proven capable of attacking several types of localized noise simultaneously regardless of their frequencies. In this study a 2-D stationary wavelet transform is used to decompose seismic data into its wavelet components. A threshold is applied to these coefficients to attenuate high amplitude noise, followed by an inverse transform to reconstruct the seismic trace. The stationary wavelet transform minimizes the phase-shift errors induced by thresholding that occur when the conventional discrete wavelet transform is used.

  • Low frequency exhaust noise of marine diesel engine is one of the most important noise sources in vessels. However, conventional absorptive silencers are limited because the absorptive material is not effective in low frequency range. In the paper, exhaust noise control of marine diesel engine has been studied by using the resonator type silencer, which was composed of concentric hole-cavity resonators. The acoustic performance of the resonator type silencer was verified by the insertion loss measurement considering flow effect. Consequently, its high performance, about $5{\sim}8dB$ noise reduction, in the low frequency range was confirmed by insertion loss measurements conducted in the ship.

  • In this paper, two-stage low noise amplifier(LNA) for S-band is designed and implemented using ATF54143 HEMT of HP CO. In order to get noise figure and input VSWR to be wanted, it is considered input VSWR and noise figure simultaneously in matching-circuit designing. The fabricated two-stage low noise amplifier has the gain of 27.8dB, input VSWR and output VSWR under 1.5.

  • To assess the noise stress of shrimp farms reasonably, we need a noise observation data underneath the waters first. But, it did not collect yet and airborne noise transfers to water noise wave using transition calculation. In case of construction of solar energy without noise stress protection wall, the threshold values (140 dB) from circumstance of underwater noise exceed within 17m at $S_2$ (15m away from source) and $S_3$ (15m away from source). Considering additional way to decrease the construction noise, all cases including minimum mode(Case A), general mode(Case B), and maximum mode(Case C) meet the guideline of underwater noise for fish farms. In case of the underwater noise could affect the fish farm, it is necessary to understand about farming species such as shrimp, monitoring of present states, and protection way under the construction.

  • Ambient noise as a background noise in the ocean has been well known for its the various and irregular signal characteristics. Generally, these signals we treated as noise and they are analyzed through stochastical level if they don't include definite sinusoidal signals. This study is to see how ocean ambient noise can be analyzed by the chaotic analysis technique. The chaotic analysis is carried out with underwater ambient noise obtained in areas near the Korean Peninsula. The calculated physical parameters of time series signal are as follows: histogram, self-correlation coefficient, delay time, frequency spectrum, sonogram, return map, embedding dimension, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, etc. We investigate the chaotic pattern of noises from these parameters. From the embedding dimensions of underwater noises, the assesment of underwater noise by chaotic analysis shows similar results if they don't include a definite sinusoidal signal. However, the values of Lyapunov exponent (divergence exponent) are smaller than that of random noise signal. As a result we confirm the possibility of classification of underwater noise using Lyapunov analysis.
