  • This catalogue is the result of a four-year survey of the mollusks of Jeju Island, the southernmost island in the Republic of Korea. Forty-eight survey stations were visited, with a total of 82 specific localities being sampled. Literature records were also obtained. Local and world distribution of each species is included. This survey reports a total of 1,072 mollusk species and subspecies; 1,015 marine and 57 land and freshwater. There are 812 gastropods, of which 755 are either entirely marine or have marine affinities. The best represented of the marine families are the Pyramidellidae, Trochidae, and Ovulidae. There are 225 bivalves, none being freshwater species, with the Veneridae, Mytilidae, and Arcidae having the largest number of species. Among the smaller classes there are sixteen Cephalopoda, eleven Polyplacophora, and eight Scaphopoda. Compared to mainland Korea, Jeju Island has a rather small terrestrial mollusk fauna and a depauperate freshwater one, with mainly Palearctic connections. The Helixarionidae and Bradybaenidae are the largest terrestrial families. The marine faunal affinities with the neighboring Japonic and Indo-West Pacific provinces are also discussed, revealing that this island's mollusk fauna is a blend of warm-temperate and subtropical-tropical species.

  • The metabolites of marine mollusk Mytilus edulis were isolated and characterized, revealing the presence of the rare free fatty acids and proteinogenic amino acids together with a non-proteinogenic free amino acid, taurine. The free fatty acids in this organism were particularly interesting for the presence of both unusual n-6 acid [20:4 (n-6)] and triple bond containing acid (2,5-octadecadiynoic acid). In addition to the proteinogenic amino acids commonly found in proteins, non-proteinogenic free amino acid taurine was isolated and the structure was determined by its physicochemical properties. Recently taurine has been given much interest in the molecular level because of diverse biological activities and the medicinal properties. Furthermore, the result of the analyses of analyses of free amino acids showed that glycine, glutamic acid, serine and alanine, which were considered to be related to the taste of this organism, are predominantly present.

  • Chejudo, because of its location off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, has a varied marine mollusk fauna. As a preliminary step in an attempt to enumerate and study the mollusks of the island, a field trip was made by the authors to the Songsan Ilchulbang area on february 20, 2001. The purpose of the trip was to survey the mollusk fauna of the shoreline west of Songsan. (omitted)

  • The Federated States of Micronesia consists of four states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae, which are located in the West Pacific Ocean. In order to investigate molluscan fauna of Kosrae Island, field survey was made twice from 21st to 30th of January, 2011 and from 6th to 17th of January, 2012 for four localities including 10 intertidal and 14 subtidal zones of Kosrae Island. The mollusk samples collected were identified based on their morphological characteristics, comprising a total of 120 species from 30 families through this survey. In this study, we provided species list and illustrations for 120 species identified, and combined these with the previous record, resulting in a total of 208 species from 47 families in Kosrae Island.

  • An aeolid nudibranch species Flabellina athadona (Bergh, 1875) is newly recorded from Korean waters. This species is distinguished from other congeneric species by the following characteristics: translucent white body, deep orange colored digestive glands, plenty of white specks, and a reversed Y-shaped marking on the head between rhinophores and oral tentacles. In this report, we also provide an identification key for the genus Flabellina in Korea, photographs, and diagnostic characteristics of F. athadona. Molecular identification using mtDNA cox1 partial sequences is also provided to help differentiate F. athadona from some of its closely related congeneric species.

  • Jeju Island, because of its location off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, has a varied marine mollusk fauna, As part of a continuing effort to enumerate and study the mollusks of the island, extensive SCUBA diving surveys have been done in the Sogwipo area, particularly around the islets of Munsom, Pomsum, and Supsum. • The tissue extract (TTE) of a marine snail Telescopium telescopium, collected from the coastal regions of West Bengal, India, was extensively screened for pharmacological and biochemical properties. Telescopium telescopium (TTE) produced significant lysis of washed rat erythrocytes (both direct and indirect), produced haemorrhagic lesions in the skin and also released haemoglobin (in vitro tissue damage) from different tissue samples. TTE was found to produce pro-inflammatory effects when injected into the rat hind paw and also increased peritoneal vascular permeability. Furthermore, intravenous administration of TTE produced a decrease in blood pressure (hypotensive effect) in anaesthetized rats. The extract produced potent esterase activity, as was evident from the breakdown of FDA with subsequent release of fluorescein (in vitro). TTE also demonstrated prominent cholinesterase, phospholipase, phosphatase and protease activities.

  • The top shell, Omphalius rusticus (Gastropoda: Trochidae), is marine mollusk inhabiting underneath a rock in the intertidal zone of the coasts of Korea and Japan, and it is one of the edible gastropods. This species is a herbivorous animal. Up to now, there have been some reports on the Trochidae: aspects of classification, spawning periodicity, production, growth and size-frequency distribution of living populations, feeding, reproductive cycle, and induction of larval metamorphosis. • The bivalve Malleus regula ($Forssk{\aa}l$ in Niebuhr, 1775) is reported for the first time from Korea. This is the second species of Malleidae reported from this country. Since the species is quite variable, comparisons were made with the original description and descriptions in the literature; some taxonomic comments were also made. Global warming and possible changes in the northward-flowing Tsushima Current may account for the addition of new mollusk species to the island's fauna.
