Combustion Characteristics of Heavy Fuel Oil-water Emulsion

  • This study is intended to check the flame temperature to raise in burning grade C heavy fuel oil and emulsion fuel oil in a boiler and to measure the concentration of Dry Shoot(DS) and Soluble Organic Fraction(SOF) after collecting the Particulate Matters (PM). The flames temperature in boiler was measured by burning grade C heavy oil and oil-water emulsion (C heavy oil $70\%\;and\;30\%$ of water) Combustion characteristics of two fuels was also compared by trapping particulate matters (PM) in exhaust gas and measuring the generated quantities of DS and SOF in fuel gas.

Utilization of alternative marine fuels for gas turbine power plant onboard ships

  • Marine transportation industry is undergoing a number of problems. Some of these problems are associated with conventional marine fuel-oils. Many researchers have showed that fuel-oil is considered as the main component that causes both environmental and economic problems, especially with the continuous rising of fuel cost. This paper investigates the capability of using natural gas and hydrogen as alternative fuel instead of diesel oil for marine gas turbine, the effect of the alternative fuel on gas turbine thermodynamic performance and the employed mathematical model. The results showed that since the natural gas is categorized as hydrocarbon fuel, the thermodynamic performance of the gas turbine cycle using the natural gas was found to be close to the diesel case performance. The gas turbine thermal efficiency was found to be 1% less in the case of hydrogen compared to the original case of diesel.

오일-질소가스 혼합유체를 이용한 고온 오일플러싱 시스템 공정설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Process Design of Hot Oil Flushing System Using Oil-Nitrogen Gas Mixing Fluid)

  • 본 연구에서는 해양플랜트설비 건조 현장에서 사용되고 있는 기존 고온 오일 플러싱 장비에 대한 성능개선을 위해 기존의 플러싱 장치에 사용되던 오일에 질소가스를 혼합한 고온 오일 플러싱 시스템에 대하여 국제표준화기구 코드(ISO code)를 기준으로 이론적 연구를 수행하였다. 연구를 위해 오일-질소가스 혼합유체 플러싱 시스템 공정을 설계 후 청정성능에 영향을 주는 혼합유체의 혼합비율, 온도, 레이놀즈수 및 액상분율 등에 대한 공정모사 결과도 분석하였다. 그 결과 관 직경과 가스상의 체적분률이 일정한 상태에서 혼합유체의 체적유량이 증가될수록 수평 유압배관 입출구의 액상분율 차이 ${\Delta}{\alpha}_L$ 값은 증가하게 되고 배관길이 방향의 위치에 따라 오일과 질소가스 기포 사이의 상분포가 달라짐을 확인했다. 이러한 상분포의 변화는 오일-질소가스 혼합유체 플러싱 시스템의 청정성능에도 커다란 영향을 줄 것으로 예상된다.

A Study on High Precision Temperature Control of an Oil Cooler for Machine Tools Using Hot-gas Bypass Method

  • This study aims at precise control of oil outlet temperature in the oil cooler system of machine tools for enhancement of working speed and processing accuracy. PID control logic is adopted to obtain desired oil outlet temperature of the oil cooler system with hot-gas bypass method. We showed that the gains of PID controller could be easily determined by using gain tuning methods to get the gain of PID controller without any mathematical model. We also investigated various gain tuning methods to design the gains of PID and compared each control performance for selecting the optimal tuning method on the hot gas bypass method through experiments. Moreover, we confirmed excellent control performance with proposed PI controller gain even though disturbances were abruptly added to the experimental system.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Diesel Engine by Mixing DME and Bunker Oil

  • DME (Dimethyl ether) is regarded as one of the candidates of alternative fuels for diesel engine, because of its higher cetane number suitable for a compression ignition engine. Also, DME is a simple chemical structure, colorless gas that is easily liquefied and transported. On the other hand, Bunker oil (JIS C heavy oil) has long been used as a basic fuel in marine diesel engines and is the lowest grade fuel oil. In this study, the combustion and emission characteristics were measured experimentally in the direct injection type diesel engine operated with DME and Bunker oil mixed fuel. From our experimental results, it is induced that DME and Bunker oil blended fuel would be an effective fuel which can reduces the concentration of harmful matter in exhaust gases.

A study on combustion of blended straight vegetable oil in marine diesel engine cylinders

  • Straight vegetable oil (SVO) is widely recommended as fuel for diesel engines in general and especially for marine diesel engines. However, SVOs used directly as fuel for diesel engines may cause problems for the engines; SVOs blended with diesel oil are a better choice. To widen understanding of the possibility of using blended SVOs as fuel alternatives, this paper presents results of experimental research on the combustion of blended straight vegetable oil in a marine diesel engine's cylinders. Results show that the fuel combustion process have the same curves as in simulations and, in the case of using blended fuels with up to 20% palm oil, the test diesel engine technical parameters such as engine output, exhaust gas temperatures, and specific fuel consumption are very similar to those of diesel oil (DO). Based on these results, marine diesel engines are strong potential applications and particularly recommended for the use of SVO blends.

  • This paper addresses some concerns faced by the shipping industry nowadays. Initially, the environmental issues were resolved and stricter regulations are now being implemented with regards to the exhaust gas, specifically nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), emitted from ships. Secondly, with the increasing and unstable cost of fuel oils in the world market, it has become almost a necessity to explore on a new alternative fuel. Hence, this study was conducted. An experiment was carried-out on a fishing survey vessel with the main engine (M/E) and generator engine (G/E) operated on expensive marine gas oil (MGO). During the experiment, two pre-refinery systems were installed and different fuel oil samples were employed for the M/E and the G/E. Furthermore, the NOx emission and soot concentration were monitored and verified. The results confirmed the compatibility of some fuel oil types to the engines and meeting the emission standards. MDO, MF15 and Bunker A can be used in place of MGO for the engines(M/E, G/E).

  • 비에스테르화 대두유의 활용 가능성을 평가하기 위해 현재 대부분의 디젤 자동차에 채택되어 있는 전자 제어 분사식 과급디젤기관에 경유, 에스테르화 바이오 디젤유 5% 및 비에스테르화 대두유 5% 혼합유를 사용하여 성능 실험을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 에스테르화 바이오 디젤유 5%와 비에스테르화 대두유 5%의 연소성능이 대부분 비슷하지만 NOx는 비에스테르화한 것이 더 적게 배출되었고 이는 Fuel NO에 의한 것을 밝혔다.

  • 본 논문에서는 해군함정의 추진용 디젤엔진의 연료로 사용되는 선박용 디젤연료와 바이오디젤을 단기통 엔진에 적용시켜 연료분사시기에 따른 실린더 내 연소특성, 엔진성능 및 질소산화물 배출 특성을 분석하고, 초고속 카메라를 이용하여 선박용 디젤연료와 바이오디젤연료의 연소과정을 분석하는데 초점을 두었다. 연료분사시기가 $BTDC25^{\circ}CA$에서 $BTDC5^{\circ}CA$까지 지각될수록 실린대 내 연소최고압력은 점점 떨어졌으나, 토크는 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 질소산화물은 $BTDC15^{\circ}CA$에서 가장 높게 측정되었으며, $BTDC15^{\circ}CA$를 기준으로 지각 및 진각조건에서는 저감되는 것으로 분석되었다. 연료분사시기가 $BTDC5^{\circ}CA$일 때 선박용 디젤연료와 바이오디젤연료의 연소과정을 비교한 결과 산소가 포함된 바이오디젤연료의 착화시기가 선박용 디젤연료보다 빠르나, 화염이 확산되어 발달할수록 화염강도는 선박용 디젤연료가 큰 것으로 분석되었다.

  • 최근 국제 유가의 상승으로 인한 선박 운용비를 절감하기 위하여 중소형 선박에서도 저질연료유의 사용이 검토되고 있는 추세이다. 이 연구에서는 현재 중소형 선박에서 연료유로 사용중인 경유와 중유 MF380 을 혼합하여 소형선박에 사용이 가능하도록 제조한 혼합연료유인 MF30 연료유에 대하여 그 물리 화학적 특성을 분석하고 정제처리 및 연료유첨가제 효과에 대해 알아보았다. 연구 결과 두가지 전처리 방식인 원심식청정기와 가열 및 균질 방식 (M.C.H) 의 효과는 다소 미약하였지만, 유동점과 인화점은 다소 낮아졌다. 연료유첨가제로 인한 개질 효과는 뚜렷이 나타나지 않았다.
