  • Researches and developments of tidal energy converters are close to commercialization stage. But, commercialization of tidal energy converters is not ready in korea. In Europe, many experts of company, laboratory and public institution involved in marine energy are active for commercialization of marine energy converters in European Marine Energy Centre. Furthermore, in IEC/TC114, standardization of technical standards for assessment and certification of tidal energy converters of each country is under discussion. Therefore, We have to prepare for commercialization, standardization and entry into the overseas market. In this study, trends of commercialization and standardization of international markets of marine energy converters are investigated and certification schemes of overseas are analyzed. We expect that this study will make contribution to establish the foundation of commercialization of tidal energy converters.

  • While global demand for energy increases annually, at the same time the demand for carbon-free, sulphur-free and NOx-free energy sources grows considerably. This state poses a challenge in the research for newer sources like biomass and shale gas as well as renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydraulic energy. Although wave energy also is a form of renewable energy it has not fully been exploited technically and economically so far. This study tries to explain those reasons in which it is beyond doubt that the demand for wave energy will soon increase as fossil energy resources are depleted and environmental concerns gain more importance. The electrical energy supplied to the grid shall be produced from wave energy whose conversion devices can basically work according to three different systems. i. Systems that exploit the motions or shape deformations of their mechanisms involved, being driven by the energy of passing waves. ii. Systems that exploit the weight of the seawater stored in a reservoir or the changes of water pressure by the oscillations of wave height, iii. Systems that convert the wave motions into air flow. One of the aims of this study is to present the classification deficits of the wave energy converters (WECs) of the "wave developers" prepared by the European Marine Energy Center, which were to be reclassified. Furthermore, a new classification of all WECs listed by the European Marine Energy Center was arranged independently. The other aim of the study is to assess the technological state of the art of these WECs designed and/or produced, to obtain an overview on them.

  • Ocean waves are mighty and powerful. Humans have explored the possibility of harnessing this mighty power for decades now. Estimated as suffice, if only, a fraction of this energy is captured and harnessed, the worry for decrease in fossil fuels diminishes and the current energy consumption of the world can be met. Though different types of methods and devices for extracting energy from this nonstop, free source has been proposed, a handful of them have reached commercialization and others are on the verge. This paper discusses the journey so far in terms of devices that have been developed or prototypes proposed or commercialized. Only a list full of them have been discussed though they exist in numbers.

  • The design of the exhaust manifold for the pulse converters of a 4 strokes high power medium-speed diesel engine is presented in terms of fatigue analysis. The said system undergoes thermal expansion due to high temperature of exhaust gas and is exposed to intrinsic vibration of the internal combustion engine. Moreover, the exhaust pulse generates pressure pulsating along the runner inside manifold. Under such circumstances, the design and construction of exhaust manifold must be carried out in a way to prevent early failure due to fracture. To validate the design concept, a test rig was developed to simulate the combination of thermal and vibrational movements, simultaneously. Experimental results showed that a certain sense of reliability can be achieved by considering a field factor obtained from the results of engine bench tests.

  • The structure of the variable liquid column oscillator(VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquide column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. VLCO is the technology to absorb high potential energy made by process of accelerated motions to occur the effect of an air spring by installation of inner air chamber. So, the application of VLCO can obtain to improve efficiency of energy than wave energy converters made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiments were carried out for the motion characteristics of simple floating body by varying the amount of internal fluid. The experimental results were compared with the calculated results.

  • The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed that a simple floating body was filled with internal fluid of same draft. The characteristics of motions were evaluated in each case of the opening or closing of the upper valves.

  • EquiMar (Equitable Testing and Evaluation of Marine Energy Extraction Devices in terms of Performance, Cost and Environmental Impact) is one of the first round of energy projects under the European Commissions 7th Framework Programme (FP7). The three year EquiMar project aims to deliver a suite of protocols for the evaluation of both wave and tidal converters, harmonizing testing and evaluation procedures across the wide range of available devices, accelerating adoption through technology matching and improving the understanding of both environmental and economic impacts associated with the deployment of devices. The EquiMar protocols will cover site selection, initial design, scaling up of designs, the deployment of arrays and environmental impact assessment as well as economic issues. EquiMar will build on existing protocols, e.g. UK DTI Marine Renewables Development Fund (MRDF) protocols for wave and tidal energy, and engage with international standards setting activities, e.g. IEC TC114.
