A reliability analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the uncertainty from the limited in-situ samples and the inherent heterogeneity of the ground on the probability of piping for the marine embankment near shore. The result are compared with those of the deterministic piping stability analysis performed using the fininte element flow analysis. The random variables used are hydraulic conductivity of the ground subsurface and embankment, and the water level of both internal and external side of the embankment. The probability of piping is most sensitive to the mean and standard deviation of internal water level of the embankment among the random variables included in the reliability analysis. It is found that the lower limits of internal water level which satisfies the allowable proability of piping failure for the embankment studied were E.L(-) 1.83m and E.L(-) 1.48m during and after the construction of the embankment, respectively.

N-value is usually used to assume the displacement depth of embankment on the soft marine clay. But N-value of the soft marine clay tend to underestimate unlike overestimating of general cases. In general case, if the length of rod is more long then N-value is more large because it is under the influence of energy loss of hammer blow. So it is reasonable to correct N-value down. But in the case of soft marine clay, N-value must not be correct down. Especially to assume the displacement depth of embankment on the soft marine clay, it must be used laboratory test results or CPT, Vane Test than N-value. In this study, it is compared with two field cases that design displacement method of embankment.
This paper investigates the development of failure surfaces induced by an embankment on soft marine clay deposits and the characteristics of such surfaces through numerical simulations and its comparative study with monitoring results. It is well known that the factor of safety of embankment slopes is closely related to the vertical loading, including the height of the embankment. That is, an increase in the embankment height reduces the factor of safety. However, few studies have examined the relationship between the lateral movement of soft soil beneath the embankment and the factor of safety. In addition, no study has investigated the distribution of the pore pressure coefficient B value along the failure surface. This paper conducts a continuum analysis using finite difference methods to characterize the development of failure surfaces during embankment construction on soft marine clay deposits. The results of the continuum analysis for failure surfaces, stress, displacement, and the factor of safety can be used for the management of embankment construction. In failure mechanism, it has been validated that a large shear displacement causes change of stress and pore pressure along the failure surface. In addition, the pore pressure coefficient B value decreases along the failure surface as the embankment height increases. This means that the rate of change in stress is higher than that in pore pressure.

The purpose of this study aims at analyzing the profit from manage a fishing place in the cultivating fishery by embankment. With the spread of the living pattern laying stress on the quality of life and the introduction of a 5-day workweek system, demand for tourism and leisure are increasing steadily and available time for them is getting longer. However, those newly-increasing demands for tourism and leisure will have a tendency of focusing on adventurous and experiential activities. From the point of view, it is needed to develop something new that can meet those kinds of demands for an experiential tourism and activity, particularly based on the cultivating fishery by embark a bay. Marine recreational fishing is one of the most popular outdoor leisures and the number of people who are participating is sharply increasing more and more because of the increasement of their income and demand for marine leisure. In this regard, this paper is focused on the economic analysis a fishing place in the cultivating fishery by embankment. According to the analysis result, the cultivating fishery by embankment is a profitable business operating fishing place in their place.
The Saemangeum embankment construction have changed the flowing on the topography of the coastal marine environment. However, the variety of ecological factors are changing from outside of Saemangeum embankment area. The ecosystem of various marine organisms have led to changes by sea surface temperature. The aim of this study is to monitoring of sea surface temperature(SST) changes were measured by using thermal infrared satellite imagery, MODIS and Landsat. The MODIS data have the high temporal resolution and Landsat satellite data with high spatial resolution was used for time series monitoring. The extracted informations from sea surface temperature changes were compared with the dyke to allow them inside and outside of Saemangeum embankment. The spatial extent of the spread of sea water were analyzed by SST using MODIS and Landsat thermal channel data. The difference of sea surface temperature between inland and offshore waters of Saemangeum embankment have changed by seasonal flow and residence time of sea water in dyke.
In this study, for the stability analysis of marine embankment, the slope stability analysis and possibility of lateral movement with the marine embankment in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$harbor were carried out. In order to simulate the practical site condition, the expected maximum sea water level and maximum embankment height were assumed for these analyses. For the evaluation of soil properties, field test, laboratory test, and especially chemical composition analysis were performed for the this analysis. Based on these test results, the soil parameters were determined by applying ground improvement concept under columnar stabilized ground condition and also the effect of staged backfilling was considered under the dredged ground condition. For the optimal design, the stability analyses of embankment with changed height and unchanged height were performed under unimproved soil condition. The result showed that both cases were unstable not only with slope stability but also with lateral movement. Therefore, Deep Mortar Piling was applied for stability analysis and this result was safe. As the conclusion, the deep mortar piling method was suggested as reinforced foundation design for this site.
Sandmats are used to dissipate trapped water rapidly from the embankment built on marine soft ground. At present, however, it becomes difficult to obtain qualified sands since natural resources such as river sand are to exhausted. Also, low permeability of sand may cause low degree of consolidation and instability of embankment. In this study, design and construction methods was discussed. Drainage capacities of prefabricated horizontal drains which were installed in highway construction site are investigated in order to find possible substitution for river sands as drainage materials. On the basis of measurement data at the construction site, it was concluded that use of the prefabricated horizontal drains shows satisfactory drainage capacity without instability of embankment.

Seasonal characteristics of water and sediment qualities and potential effects of the freshwater discharge from a small tide embankment interior in a coastal area in Goheung county were investigated from May to September in 2012. Chemical oxygen demand values (COD) were mostly higher than 2 mg/L in summer ebb tide, which exceed the standard value of water quality criteria II of acceptable level for aquaculture activities. Nitrogen and phosphorus were found as the limiting nutrients for algae growth in summer and fall and in spring, respectively. Nitrogen was the limiting nutrient for diatom growth in the whole studied period. The sudden high values of COD, ammonia, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) were found in water sample collected from station 5 which located in front of the tide embankment sluice gate during spring ebb tide. The freshwater discharge form the tide embankment interior maybe affected the survey areas during a short time interval. Mean values of eutrophication index of the surveyed coastal region in spring, summer and fall were all bigger than 1. Water quality was mostly considered at level II which acceptable for aquaculture activities. Sediment quality in this study was generally in the range of standard for fisheries environment.
Soil deformations such as settlement, heaving and lateral flow have frequently happened on marine reclaimed soft grounds due to embankment filling or banking. The electrical resistivity survey was applied to investigate on ground surface such soil deformation without disturbance of ground. A test embankment was performed to assess soil deformation in marine reclaimed soft grounds, where was located at Sihwa area in western coast of Korean peninsula. The soft ground was composed of clayey sediments. After embankment filling, the boundary of soil deformation affected by the filling could be investigated with application of the electrical resistivity survey. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that the extent of deformation is about 5 m laterally to the southern direction of embankment and about 5~6 m vertically in depth, which is about 1-1.2 times of embankment height. This shows that the electric resistivity survey can be applied to interpret the ground deformation in a soft ground region.

Sub-bottom profiler(SBP) has been used extensively for the mapping of basement in the foundation design of offshore structure, for pre- and post-dredging operations within harbors and channels, for selection of pipeline routes, sitting of drilling platforms, and in the exploration for an aggregates such as sands and gravels. During the construction of Siwha embankment for irrigation water and the expansion of arable land, the breaking of an embankment unfortunately occurred so that a lot of riprap was swept away and widely dispersed by the tide and strong current. The feasibility study for the construction of the tidal-powered electric plant in Siwha embankment was performed quite recently. Therefore we made use of SBP survey to investigate the distribution of the lost riprap. We could successfully map out the distribution of the lost riprap from the reflection amplitude characteristics of the sediments in SBP data set. We demonstrated the variation of reflection amplitude versus the sediments with and/or without riprap by means of the numerical modeling of acoustic wave equation using finite difference method. Also we examined an amplitude anomaly of the ripraped area through the physical modeling using ultrasonic.
