Chloride Diffusion Coefficient at Reference Time for High Performance Concrete for Bridge Pylons in Marine Environment (해상교량 주탑용 고성능 콘크리트의 기준재령 염소이온 확산계수)

  • High performance concrete mixes are selected and corresponding test specimens are made for the study of chloride diffusion coefficient at reference time. The concrete mixes were same designs as those used in construction of bridges located in a marine environment. Mix design variables included binder type, water-to-binder ratio, mineral admixtures to total binder weight substitution ratio, fine aggregate source, chemical water reducer admixture type for high strength and high flowability, and target slump or slump flow. The test results showed that the diffusion coefficients at reference time varied significantly according to the type of mineral admixtures and their substitution ratios. A model for diffusion coefficient at reference time considering the type of mineral admixture and the substitution ratio was developed. Diffusion coefficients from the developed model were compared with those from literature review, a previous model, and additional test results. All of the comparisons verified that the developed model can reasonably predict diffusion coefficients and the application of the model to the durability design against chloride penetration is appropriate.

  • There are many structures attacked by chloride ions near a marine environment. And they are attacked by a salt of de-icing chemicals. So, the embedded reinforcement is corroded. In the same time, these are under a fatigue loading by a traffic loading in bridges. In previous studies, there are many researches that deal with a bond behavior under a monotonic loading according to the rate of a steel corrosion. But there are most cases that the steel corrosion and the repeated loading are acted on structures simultaneously. So, in this study, it is investigated a fatigue-bond behavior of RC structures under a steel corrosion and a fatigue loading. Main variables of the test are a corrosion of steel reinforcement and a level of stress.

A Study on the Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance of Coated Steel Using Polymer Dispersion (폴리머 디스퍼션을 이용한 강재의 내식성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Reinforced concrete structures under sever conditions such as marine structures, bridges and structural constructed with aggregated(dredged front sea). can be deteriorated from corrosion of the reinforcing bars. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion reflectance of coated steel using polymer dispersion and polymer cement slurry. Polymer dispersion and polymer cement slurry with various polymer types were coated to the surface of bars and steel plate, and tested for accelerated corrosion tests. Tests include adhesion in tension, bending test, chloride ion spray, penetration of NaCl 10% solution and carbonation. From the test results, the corrosive resistance of steel is considerably improved by using polymer dispersion and polymer cement flurry at surface of steel. The difference of the corrosive resistance is hardly recognized according to types of polymer dispersion. The coated steel using polymer dispersion and polymer foment slurry will be improved to a great extent compared to those of plain steel when increasing content of chloride ion in cement concrete.

  • Reinforced concrete is used for bridges and large structures that are constructed with social overhead capital because they are economically and semi-permanently integrated with reinforcing bar and concrete. However, when the chloride ion in the concrete destroys the passive film of the reinforcing bar by the marine exposure environment and the snow remover used in the winter season, and the reinforcing bar is corroded by various chemical and physical actions, the durability is deteriorated in a short period, and the life span is shortened. In this study, a repair method to recover the durability of the initial structure by effectively removing chloride ion from the damage caused by salting of the above mentioned reinforced concrete was conducted.

Development of Maintenance Simulation System and Prediction of Chloride Ion Permeation for Marine Concrete Structures (해양콘크리트 구조물의 염해 예측 및 유지보수 시뮬레이션시스템 개발)

  • As both laboratory accelerated experiment and field exposure experiment were performed, at recent, the fifth field test at five year exposures was proceeded according to long period experimental plan. Field experiment, for the adoption of the developed evaluation model, which is consisted of the analysis of chloride penetration profile at gate bridges of sea-dike completed 30 years ago was carried out during upgrading the basic evaluation model with analyzing the annual field test data. The surface concentration of chlorides was replaced to the concentration of chloride of inner concrete near the surface chlorides among his research results at basic model. Maage's suggestion function was accepted too as a diffusion coefficient of chloride after verifying the change of diffusion coefficient by analysis of annual field test data. The comparison of field data with model predictions and the estimation of remaining life time demonstrates that the proposed updated model and maintenance simulation system can be used to predict the chloride penetration profile in the marine tidal zone and appropriate repair period and cost.

Monitoring corrosion of reinforced concrete beams in a chloride containing environment under different loading levels

  • Corrosion has significant adverse effects on the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, especially those exposed to a marine environment and subjected to mechanical stress, such as bridges, jetties, piers and wharfs. Previous studies have been carried out to investigate the corrosion behaviour of steel rebar in various concrete structures, however, few studies have focused on the corrosion monitoring of RC structures that are subjected to both mechanical stress and environmental effects. This paper presents an exploratory study on the development of corrosion monitoring and detection techniques for RC structures under the combined effects of external loadings and corrosive media. Four RC beams were tested in 3% NaCl solutions under different levels of point loads. Corrosion processes occurring on steel bars under different loads and under alternative wetting - drying cycle conditions were monitored. Electrochemical and microscopic methods were utilised to measure corrosion potentials of steel bars; to monitor galvanic currents flowing between different steel bars in each beam; and to observe corrosion patterns, respectively. The results indicated that steel corrosion in RC beams was affected by local stress. The point load caused the increase of galvanic currents, corrosion rates and corrosion areas. Pitting corrosion was found to be the main form of corrosion on the surface of the steel bars for most of the beams, probably due to the local concentration of chloride ions. In addition, visual observation of the samples confirmed that the localities of corrosion were related to the locations of steel bars in beams. It was also demonstrated that electrochemical devices are useful for the detection of RC beam corrosion.

Evaluations of Corrosion Resistance of Coated Steel Using Polymer Cement Slurry (폴리머 시멘트 슬러리로 코팅한 도장철근의 내식성 평가)

Polymer cement slurry with various polymer dispersions and corrosion inhibiting agent were coated to the surface of bars, and tested for accelerated corrosion tests. Tests include immersion in NaCl 10% solution, chloride ion spray, autoclave cure, autoclave cure after carbonation, penetration of NaCl 10 % solution, carbonation after penetration of NaCl 10% solution. Test results, show that the anti-corrosive performace is considerably improved by using polymer cement slurry at surface of steel. And this trend is marked by adding of corrosion inhibiting agent. This difference of the anti-corrosive properties is hardly recognized according to types of polymer dispersions. The coated steel using polymer cement slurry will be improved to a great extent compared to those of plain steel when increasing content of chloride ion in cement concrete.

GEOTECHNICAL DESIGNS OF THE SHIP IMPACT PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR INCHEON BRIDGE

  • The Incheon Bridge, which was opened to the traffic in October 2009, is an 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge connecting the Incheon International Airport with the expressway networks around the Seoul metropolitan area by way of Songdo District of Incheon City. This bridge is an integration of several special featured bridges and the major part of the bridge consists of cable-stayed spans. This marine cable-stayed bridge has a main span of 800 m wide to cross the vessel navigation channel in and out of the Incheon Port. In waterways where ship collision is anticipated, bridges shall be designed to resist ship impact forces, and/or, adequately protected by ship impact protection (SIP) systems. For the Incheon Bridge, large diameter circular dolphins as SIP were made at 44 locations of the both side of the main span around the piers of the cable-stayed bridge span. This world's largest dolphin-type SIP system protects the bridge against the collision with 100,000 DWT tanker navigating the channel with speed of 10 knots. Diameter of the dolphin is up to 25 m. Vessel collision risk was assessed by probability based analysis with AASHTO Method-II. The annual frequency of bridge collapse through the risk analysis for 71,370 cases of the impact scenario was less than $0.5{\times}10^{-4}$ and satisfies design requirements. The dolphin is the circular sheet pile structure filled with crushed rock and closed at the top with a robust concrete cap. The structural design was performed with numerical analyses of which constitutional model was verified by the physical model experiment using the geo-centrifugal testing equipment. 3D non-linear finite element models were used to analyze the structural response and energy-dissipating capability of dolphins which were deeply embedded in the seabed. The dolphin structure secures external stability and internal stability for ordinary loads such as wave and current pressure. Considering failure mechanism, stability assessment was performed for the strength limit state and service limit state of the dolphins. The friction angle of the crushed stone as a filling material was reduced to $38^{\circ}$ considering the possibility of contracting behavior as the impact.

A Numerical Study on the Effect of Steel Casing on Bearing Capacity of Drilled Shafts for Marine Bridges (수치해석을 이용한 국내 해상교량 현장타설말뚝의 강관지지효과)

  • This study is concerned with the characteristics of the behavior of drilled shafts with steel casing, a material that is used for large bridge foundations in Korea, and especially for weak submerged ground conditions. The effect of steel casing on bearing capacity of drilled shafts was also verified in this study. Three large drilled shafts with 1.8, 2.4, 3.0m diameter respectively were selected, and 3-D finite element analysis has been undertaken on the following three models: 1) drilled shafts without steel casing, 2) drilled shafts with steel casing, 3) steel-concrete composite drilled shafts. Interface element between concrete core and steel casing was taken into account, and ground conditions and load combinations were applied which had been considered in the fields. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions were evaluated to understand the characteristics of the behavior of the drilled shafts. Based on the study performed, the steel casing used as load-carrying materials in the drilled shafts can reduce the horizontal and vertical displacement of drilled shafts by 32~37% and 15~19% respectively compared with drilled shafts without steel casing.
