  • Ciliates are unicellular eukaryotes and one of the most abundant and speciose protistan groups. However, their diversity is underestimated, and many new species are waiting for our discovery. During several field surveys conducted from 2018 to 2021 to document indigenous Korean ciliates, 10 unrecorded ciliate species were collected and investigated from freshwater, marine, and semiterrestrial habitats. The morphology of these species was studied based on observation of living and protargol-stained specimens. These species belong to five classes as follows: 1) class Heterotrichea - Peritromus faurei; 2) class Spirotrichea - Heterotachysoma dragescoi, Pseudokeronopsis parasongi, and Certesia quadrinucleata; 3) class Nassophorea - Chilodontopsis depressa; 4) class Prostomatea - Plagiocampa rouxi and Urotricha furcata; and 5) class Oligohymenophorea - Metanophrys similis, Uronema gallicum, and Protocyclidium citrullus. Also, we provide a brief diagnosis, photomicrographs, and information of the locality for each species. Further, we compare each species with the most recent description and with similar congeners.

  • The varunid crab, Varuna yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986, is known as widely distributed in the Southeast Asian region. Three specimens of varunid crabs were collected near the estuary of the river from Korea and identified as V. yui. Varuna yui could be distinguished from the other congeneric species, V. litterata (Fabricius, 1798), by having a more extended mesial lobe on the distal region of the male first gonopod. In this paper, morphological diagnosis and illustrations of the newly collected V. yui are provided. The specimens examined herein were deposited in the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources.

  • The marine carotenoid fucoxanthin can be found in marine brown seaweeds, macroalgae, diatoms, and microalgae, and has remarkable biological properties. Numerous studies have shown that fucoxanthin has considerable potential and promising applications in human health, but the underlying mechanisms involved in its anti-allergic activity are not fully understood. We here investigated the mechanisms by anti-allergic activity of fucoxanthin fraction from Eisenia bicyclis in immunoglobulin E-antigen complex (IgE/DNP-BSA)-stimulated RBL-2H3 mast cells. This study we found that the fucoxanthin inhibits the release of ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase and suppressed not only transcriptional activation of NF-${\kappa}B$, but also phosphorylation of ERK and JNK in IgE/DNP-BSA-treated RBL-2H3 cells. Fucoxanthin may be useful for preventing allergic diseases, including asthma and atopic dermatitis.

  • We found three fouling bryozoans from the materials collected from seven localities (ports, yacht marina, intertidal and subtidal zones) in the coastal seas of South Korea from 2003 to 2021. These three species, Thalamoporella californica (Levinsen, 1909), Scruparia ambigua (d'Orbigny, 1841), and Tricellaria inopinata d'Hondt and Occhipinti Ambrogi, 1985, and one genus Scruparia Oken, 1815 are newly added to the Korean bryozoan fauna. Of the three species, Scruparia ambigua and Tricellaria inopinata are cosmopolitan or widespread, and Thalamoporella californica is from the East Pacific Ocean in tropical/temperate water. It seems that some of the previously reported T. occidentalis in Korea have a high probability of being T. inopinata. In this study, some Tricellaria occidentalis reported by Seo (2005) are synonymized into T. inopinata. A total of 77 species of fouling bryozoans has been reported in Korea, with three new bryozoans resulting from this study. Descriptions and illustrations of the three fouling bryozoans using scanning electron microscopy are provided in this study.

  • Coastal dunes must be conserved. Their native halophytes support coastal geography while their symbiotic microorganisms help vegetation thrive. The Goraebul coast has the largest, well-conserved dune system on the East Sea of the Korean Peninsula due to a climax mixed halophyte (C. soldanella, C. kobomugi, and E. mollis) vegetation support. This study identified rhizobacteria and their diversity in mixed halophyte communities unique to Goraebul. Five phyla, 12 genera, and 21 species were identified based on 16S rDNA sequences from 65 isolates. The phylum Bacillota, class Bacillota, order Bacillales, and family Bacillaceae were identified, with Bacillus as the dominant genus (46.15%). The richness and Shannon's diversity were higher at the species than at the genus level due to the dominance of Bacillus; however, various Bacillus species (7) were identified. Therefore, the climax mixed vegetation adapted to the Goraebul coast may exert natural selection pressure in favor of the common characteristics of Bacillus. However, despite this advantage, the Shannon equitability (0.86), Simpson (0.08), and Shannon diversity (2.79) indexes indicate a stable rhizosphere cluster and the climax mixed vegetation is affected by symbiotic relationships between healthy rhizosphere microbiota.

  • A phenolic substance was isolated from the bark of Pinus koraiensis. It was identified to be pinostilbenoside. Its anti-$LTD_4$ activity was evaluated using isolated guinea pig trachea, and its half maximal bronchodilating activity ($EC_{50}$) was $593{\pm}56{\mu}g{\cdot}ml^{-1}$. Because it is not known that stilbene derivatives possess anti-asthmatic activity through $LTD_4$ antagonism, here we report the result.

  • Three species in the genus Aetea (Bryozoa: Cheilostomata: Aeteidae) are described: Aetea anguina (Linnaeus, 1758), A. ligulata Busk, 1852, and A. truncata (Landsborough, 1852). Aetea ligulata Busk, 1852 and A. truncata (Landsborough, 1852) are new records of Korean bryozoan fauna. Four of the 17 species in the genus Aetea Lamouroux, 1812 are cosmopolitan or widespread. Three of these species (Aetea sica (Couch, 1844) was not observed) are reported in this study.

  • The first occurrence of the genus Hornera (Bryozoa, Cyclostomata) is reported from waters around Jeju Island, Korean Peninsula. Hornera jeongsangi n. sp. differs from all known species of the genus Hornera in having very prominent spiny protrusions around the autozooidal apertures, which are not arranged in fascicles, the gonozooidal ooeciopore facing frontally and nonporous zooidal walls around the ooeciopore.
