Generally, underwater unmanned vehicle have adopted an inertial navigation system (INS), dead reckoning (DR), acoustic navigation and geophysical navigation techniques as the navigation method because GPS does not work in deep underwater environment. Even if the tactical inertial sensor can provide very detail measurement during long operation time, it is not suitable to use the tactical inertial sensor for small size and low cost UUV because the tactical inertial sensor is expensive and large. One alternative to INS is attitude heading reference system (AHRS) with the micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensor because of MEMS inertial sensor's small size and low power requirement. A cost effective and small size attitude heading reference system (AHRS) which incorporates measurements from 3-axis micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes, accelerometers, and 3-axis magnetometers has been developed to provide a complete attitude solution for UUV. The AHRS based MEMS overcome many problems that have inhibited the adoption of inertial system for small UUV such as cost, size and power consumption. Several evaluation experiments were carried out for the validation of the developed AHRS's function and these experiments results are presented. Experiments results prove the fact that the developed MEMS AHRS satisfied the required specification.

In a marine ubiquitous sensor network (USN) system using expensive sensors in the harsh ocean environment, it is very important to discover failures and devise recovery techniques to deal with such failures. Therefore, in order to perform failure modeling, this study analyzes the USN-based real-time water quality monitoring service of the Gaduri Aqua Farms at Songdo Island of Yeosu, South Korea and devises methods of discovery and recovery of failure by classifying the types of failure into system element failure, communication failure, and data failure. In particular, to solve problems from the perspective of data, this study defines data integrity and data consistency for use in identifying data failure. This study, by identifying the exact type of failure through analysis of the cause of failure, proposes criteria for performing relevant recovery. In addition, the experiments have been made to suggest the duration as to how long the data should be stored in the gateway when such a data failure occurs.

In our daily life, the need of energy increases day by day. However, the amount of natural resources on the earth is limited and thus gaining renewable energy as an energy resource is one of the important and urgent problems. Solar energy is one of the most popular available energy sources that can be converted into electricity by using solar panels. In order for solar panels to produce maximal output power, the incident angle of the sunlight needs to be persistently perpendicular to the solar panel. By the way, most of the solar panels are installed at fixed position and direction. Therefore, as the sun's position changes, it is impossible to produce maximal output power inevitably. To improve this problem, in this paper, a sun tracking system using two degree-of-freedom (DOF) active sensor array is proposed so that the solar panel may always direct sunlight perpendicularly. And also a series of software, such as a search mode and a holding mode, which can control the developed sun tracking system is developed. Several experiments using the implemented sun tracking system are executed and the effectiveness of the system is verified from the experimental results.

A specially designed tendon, which is proposed by embedding an FBG sensor into the center king cable of a 7-wire strand tendon, was applied to monitor the prestress force and load transfer of ground anchor. A series of tensile tests and a model pullout test were performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed smart tendon as a measuring sensor of tension force and load transfer along the tendon. The smart tendon has proven to be very effective for monitoring prestress force and load transfer by measuring the strain change of the tendon at the free part and the fixed part of ground anchor, respectively. Two 11.5 m long proto-type ground anchors were made simply by replacing a tendon with the proposed smart tendon and prestress forces of each anchor were monitored during the loading-unloading step using both FBG sensor embedded in the smart tendon and the conventional load cell. By comparing the prestress forces measured by the smart tendon and load cell, it was found that the prestress force monitored from the FBG sensor located at the free part is comparable to that measured from the conventional load cell. Furthermore, the load transfer of prestressing force at the tendon-grout interface was clearly measured from the FBGs distributed along the fixed part. From these pullout tests, the proposed smart tendon is not only expected to be an alternative monitoring tool for measuring prestress force from the introducing stage to the long-term period for health monitoring of the ground anchor but also can be used to improve design practice through determining the economic fixed length by practically measuring the load transfer depth.

The ballast water may be discharged into another sea area with marine organisms, it caused problems to disturb the marine ecosystem. So, in order to remove these environmental risk factors, the IMO has mandated the installation of BWTS to the all ships. Our monitoring system diagnose and predict a failure of BWTS by analyzing the sensor information of BWTS collected from which the ships scattered in the ocean of several. This paper presents the design and implementation of communication modules for BWTS remote monitoring considering the satellite communication charge fee. In the our study, we implemented the safety and cost-saving communication modules by LabVIEW program. The collected sensor informations is encrypted and compressed by LabVIEW modules running on RIO. Then they will be transfer to the land server and will be decrypt to enable monitoring in the land server. For the verification, we build the test modules which can verify from collecting the sensor data to consuming them in the monitoring server. We carried out 20 times for the data pattern in all of case. So, we verified the excellent functionality and reliability through the experimental result.

A Flapping foil Produces an effective angle of attack, resulting in a normal force vector with thrust and lift components, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. A heaving foil model was made and it was operated within a circulating water channel at low Reynolds numbers. The unsteady thrust and lift acting on the heaving foil were measured simultaneously using a 6-axis force sensor based on force and moment detectors. We have been examined various conditions such as heaving frequency and amplitude in NACA 0010 Profile. The results showed that thrust coefficient and efficiency increased with reduced frequency and amplitude. We also Presented the experimental results on the unsteady fluid forces of a heaving foil at various Parameters.

In order to evaluate the safety of navigation at sea and the safety of mooring ship on berthing, it is necessary that the wave and wind induced ship dynamic motion should be measured in real time domain for the validity of theoretical evaluation method such as sea-keeping performance and safety of mooring. In this paper, the basic design of sensors is discussed and some system configurations were shown. The developed system mainly consists of 4 kinds of sensors such as three dimensional accelerator, two dimensional tilt sensor, two displacement sensors and azimuth sensor. Using the this measuring system, it can be obtained the 6 degrees of freedom of ship dynamic motions at sea and on berthing such as rolling, pitching, yawing, sway, heave, surge under the external forces.

In these days, welding is the most commonly used metallic connection technology and also is the fundamental production technology of the modem industrial, which is used in various areas of the industrial fields, such as shipbuilding, automobiles, airplanes and plant facilities. However welding process produces strong light, electric currents, and fume gases etc., and the welding automation is not so easy compared to the other works of manufacturing industries which produce the standardized products in large quantities. So it is difficult to weld and detect the all kinds of seams automatically by a specific sensor. In this paper the sensor applying strain gauges is used to detect the seams of triangular wave form. With the auto carriage having the sensor we proposed the experiment to weld and track the seam automatically.

This paper proposes the effective monitoring method for marine engine system, which is implemented based upon Controller Area Network (CAN). As the marine engine monitoring system requires various kind of information, a lot of sensor nodes are distributed to several places. The CAN supports huge numbers of message IDs for the sensor nodes and provides a stable communication channel in a wide area such as a 12,000 TEU container ship. Since the CAN is priority-based communication system, some of hard real-time messages like alarm messages which are time-critical to the operation of the vessel cannot be communicated within the dead-time. Therefore it is desirable to distinguish the bandwidth of the CAN for static state messages and transition-state messages not to be harmful to the engine operations. Using the features of message arbitration ability of the CAN, it is proposed in this paper that the bandwidth allocation is dynamically adjusted to cope with the increment of input signal to improve the performance of monitoring system. Effectiveness and validity of the proposed scheme have been demonstrated through real experiments.
