An Experimental Study on the Durability Performance for Ternary Blended Concrete Containing Both Fly Ash and Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (플라이 애시와 고로슬래그 미분말을 복합 활용한 3성분계 혼합 콘크리트의 내구성능에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Ternary blended concrete, which contains both fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag, has an initial cost effective and is environment friendly. Furthermore, it has a lot of technical advantages such as the improvement of long term compressive strength, high workability, and the reduction of hydration heat. However, as the use and study on the performance of ternary blended concrete is limited, it is worthwhile studying the actual performance of this technology. This study examined the durability performance of ternary blended concrete, compared to binary blended concrete and ordinary portland concrete. It led to the conclusion that ternary blended concrete is very suitable for submerged members under marine environment. However, it should be noticed that ternary blended concrete becomes weak on carbonation, when it is situated on combined deterioration environment of carbonation and chloride. Therefore, the curing duration of ternary blended concrete should be prolonged in order to enhance the resistance of carbonation.

  • In this study, structural stability of large diameter high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe during installation was numerically investigated in order to investigate the effect of concrete collar dimension, water depth and tension (pulling force). From the numerical simulation results, the total stress of HDPE pipe with designed concrete collar was within 2.5%, so the total weight of concrete collar for sinking of HDPE is important rather than concrete collar dimension. Furthermore, the tension area for possible installation is decreased as the air filling rate is increased. Therefore, it is important to calculate the reasonable tension range before actual installation for safe installation of HDPE pipe.

  • Generally, the durability of the reinforced concrete structures reduce when they are constructed in marine environments. The Mg ions and sulfate ions in seawater cause chemical attacks in concrete and the cracks in concrete result from corrosion of steel due to chlorides. In this study, the mortar specimens made from 5 different types of cement were immersed in artificial seawater of 2 times concentration and then we measured the compressive strength, the length change and the weight change. As a result of this study, we found that the compressive strength ratio decreased in the immersed 56days. We also found the longer the immersed days were, the more the increase of weight ratio and the length change were.

  • When the concrete structures are in contact with seawater, concentration of chloride for estimating chloride diffusion coefficient can be defined as the chloride concentration of sea water. However, in case the concrete structures, constructed in the seashore, aren't directly in contact with seawater, it is difficult to establish the interface concentration of chloride. In addition, marine concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack such as rebar corrosion, among the cause of salt attack, airborne sea salt is primary factor. Therefore, in this study, salt attack environment by airborne sea salt was investigated in terms of the distance from seashore at 33 spots, 6 areas in East, West, South coast for 1 year. Results indicated that airborne sea salt is decreased by $y=a{\cdot}x^{-b}$ equation to the distance from seashore.

  • The building that supply tidal and splash zone was constructed near Seamangeum Gate Bridge. The specimens that will be tested for maintenance of gate bridge were exposed on the tidal and splash zone, totally about 650(Fig. 1). The characteristics of strength, salt penetration profile, field application of surface repair material and section recover material will be acquired by periodical test. The program was developed to obtain optimal maintenance strategy of gate bridge as a marine concrete structure and to deposit experimental data, lab. test result, field test result, on its D/B. On this paper, we hope to introduce two years exposure data as compressive strength, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of dynamic elasticity, field adoption of repair and recover materials. As briefly speaking the results, possion's ratio, elasticity, strength was general, but the recover materials have some problems. There was crack between concrete and recover material and delamination figures.

  • A chloride is an important deteriorating factor which governs the durability of the reinforced-concrete structures under marine environments. Also, the main penetration mechanism of chloride ion into concrete is a diffusion phenomenon. In this study, It is evaluated the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion in non-steady state by Fick's second law. Submergence method in salt water carried out in this experiment. Two types of cement which is different in mineral composition were used. In addition, the effect of mineral admixtures of blast-furnace slag and meta-kaolin was studied. In conclusion, the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion is much affected according to cement type and mineral admixtures, also, it is proved that meta-kaolin as well as blast-furnace slag is effective in preventing penetration of chloride ion.

  • Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars is a major concern for ocean engineers when reinforced concrete structures are exposed to marine environments. Evaluating the degree of corrosion and corrosion-induced defects is extremely necessary to pursue a proper retrofit or rehabilitation plan for reinforced concrete structures. A promising inspection should be carried out for the evaluation, otherwise the retrofit or rehabilitation process would be useless. Nowadays, ultrasonic guided wave-based inspection techniques become quite promising for the inspection, mainly because of their long-range propagation capability and their sensitivity to different types of defects or conditions. Evaluating haw the guided waves response to the different types of defects or conditions is quite challenging and important. This study shows how surface conditions of reinforcing bars and a corrosion-induced defect, separation, affect guided wave propagation in reinforced concrete. Experiments and associated signal analysis show the sensitivity of guided waves to the surface conditions, as well as the amounts of separation at the interface between. concrete and steel bar.

Corrosion of Steel in Concrete Deteriorated by Freezing/Thawing and Carbonation (동결융해 및 중성화를 받은 콘크리트의 철근 부식 특성)

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcing in concrete deteriorated by freezing/thawing and carbonation was characterized. Concrete specimens were prepared using various kinds of cements such as ordinary portland cement (type I), low heat portland cement (type IV, belite rich cement), sulphate resistance portland cement (type V), blast furnace slag portland cement and ternary blended cement. Of various cements, type V and type IV with lower $C_3A$ content revealed better steel corrosion resistance after freezing/thawing and carbonation. $C_3A$ content in cement might affect freezing/thawing resistance in sea water.

Current Status on the Chloride Content and Carbonation of Train Structures in the East (동해안 39개 철도구조물의 염화물 함유량과 중성화에 대한 현황분석)

  • Recently, the premature corrosion for reinforced concrete structure exposed to chloride bring about a serious problem in concrete structures. Specially, the concrete structures of sea coast are exposed much to chloride which make rapid corrosion. Thus, construction activities and maintenances for marine facilities are more demanded than those for land structures. The results of this study have been analysed to identify the extent of chloride content and incidence of carbonation for construction age. After measuring chloride content in concrete, it was conclued that about 90% of all tests on concrete samples exceed the acceptable maximum limit to risk of chloride-induced carbonation. The carbonation rate coffnient by age of train structures in the east eatimated 6. 55, 4.76 grater than 3. 727. In the basis of this result, it is necessary to maintenance for the important train facilities with the regular tests of chloride and carbonation.

  • In this study, the device was developed for evaluating the effect of pressure on chloride ion penetration of concrete. And chloride-ion penetration depth and water soluble chloride contents was evaluated concrete using ordinary portland cement and blast-furnace slag cement using developed device. As a result, chloride ion penetration of concrete was promoted according to the action of pressure and the exposure period. and the incorporation of blast-furnace slag was effective for chloride attack resistibility under pressure.
