Swine manure has been recognized as a organic sources for composting and many research was conducted to efficiently utilize and treat. This study was to evaluate a feasibility for producing swine manure compost under various treatment with mixture of swine manure and saw dust. Treatments were designed as follows; non aerated composting pile(REF), aerated composting pile of $100L/m^3$(EXP1), and aerated composting pile of $150L/m^3$(EXP2). The total days of fermentation were 28 days and each samples were collected at every 7 days from starting of composting. Temperature sensors were installed under 30~40cm from the surface of composting pile. Inner temperature in composting piles of EXP1 and EXP2 was rapidly increased to $67{\sim}75^{\circ}C$ within 1~2 days. The elevated temperatures found during the thermophilic phase are essential for rapid degradation of organic materials. While swine manure composted, moisture content, total nitrogen, EC of EXP1, EXP2 in sample at 28 days were lower than those of REF. But, pH and organic matter of EXP1, EXP2 in sample at 28 days were higher than those of REF. After finishing fermentation experiment, maturity was evaluated with germination test. Calculated germination index(GI) at REF, EXP1 and EXP2 were 23.49, 68.50 and 51.81, respectively. The values of germination index were higher at EXP1 and EXP2 which is aerated composting piles than REF which is non aerated composting pile. According to the results, composting process by aerated static pile compost had significant effect on the reduction of required period for composting. Supplying adequate amount of air to compost swine manure will greatly reduce composting period.
This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of different fertilizer on growth and yield of Fritjllaria thunbergii in Chungbuk Rural Development Administration from 1993 to 1995. Emergence date was faster about 1 to 5 days in fertilizer application than that of non-fertilizer, and emergence ratio was lower about 2.4% to 35.7% in fertilizer application than that of non-fertilizer. Plant height was longer about 2.8cm to 10.6cm in fertilizer application than that of non-fertilizer, and leaf length and width had same tendencies. Bulb height was increased about 0.1 to 0.2cm in fertilizer application than 1.9cm in non-fertilizer and bulb width was increased about 0.5 to 0.7cm in fertilizer application than 2.2cm in non-fertilizer. Total yield was increased about 27% in N-P-K fertilizer, 24% in compost, 23% in compound fertilizer for garlic and 21 % in fowl dropping manure than 572kg/10a in non-fertilizer. Yield of marketable goods was high about 79% in compost. 72% in compound fertilizer for garlic and fowl dropping manure, and 69% in organic fertilizer than 229kg/l0a in non-fertilizer. Therfore, in the cultivation of Fritillaria thunbergii the application of organic fertilizer such as compost and fowl dropping manure was considered more profitable than the application of chemical fertilizer in middle region.

We conducted a short-term incubation experiment in order to understand the effect of the salinity of reclaimed coastal soils on nitrogen mineralization of livestock manure compost (LMC). Two soils with the same soil texture but different EC levels were collected from the same field. These samples were treated with 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% of LMC by weight basis and incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ to observe changes in inorganic N contents, pH, and dehydrogenase activity with respect to time. As a result, regardless of the soil EC level, as the LMC increased, the total content of the inorganic N ($NH_4{^+}+NO_3{^-}$) increased. Difference in the soil EC level did not affect N mineralization of LMC greatly. The soil EC had negligible effect on the dehydrgenase activity as with the case of inorganic nitrogen. The $NH_4{^+}$ contents remained very low throughout the experimental period starting from the first week of incubation. We believe this is due to the high pH level (pH 7.9 and pH 8.3) of the original soils leading to ammonia volatilization. On the other hand the $NO_3{^-}$ content maintained high level as the LMC treatment level increased and reached maximum at the third week. The pH of the soil during incubation period decreased as the $NO_3{^-}$ contents increased and increased slightly after three weeks. The rise of pH level is believed to be from the $NO_3{^-}$ absorption for immobilization by microbes. In conclusion, the high soil $EC_{1:5}$ level of $12dS\;m^{-1}$ conducted in this experiment did not affect the growth in terms of soil microbes involved in N mineralization of LMC.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of organic materials on soil organisms. Changes in the community structure, and population density of soil organisms (microbes, nematodes, and microarthropods) were studied in a Korean ginseng field. Phospholipid fatty acids analysis showed that the relative abundances of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes did not differ significantly. The aerobes/anaerobes ratio was the lowest in soils amended with leaf mold, indicating that the decomposition speed was slow. Further, the addition of leaf mold to the soil enhanced the saturated/monounsaturated fatty acid ratio and cyclopropyl fatty acid/precursor ratio, which indicated an increase in environmental stresses. Application of pig manure compost (PMC) had positive effects on the population density of nematodes, and negative effects on that of oribatid mites. The population densities of nematodes, and microarthropods remained relatively low in the plots that had been treated with leaf mold or pig manure compost. It is suggested that pre-planting soil management directed at enhancing the biological decomposition efficiency should be continued over a long period to increase the soil bioactivity in virgin soils.
The microflora changes of 10 water-controled treatments combined with livestock manures(pig, chicken) and bulking agents(sawdust, paper sludge) were investigated. The B/F values of the P-1 and C-1(65%, $H_2O$) treatments were 3571 and 5400 respectively, but those of the P-4 and C-4(50%, $H_2O$) treatments showed very low values, 667 and 334, respectively. The B/F values tended to increase with higher water content of the treatments. In the composting processes, the successions of microflora, adapting the compost environments, took place via fluctuating temperature. In the high temperature period, the numbers of mesophilic bacteria and fungi decreased, but that of the spore forming bacteria increased. However, the number of mesophilic bacteria inereased during the cold period. The B/F values of compost ranged 25-300, which indicates a decrease in the quantity of bacteria. The time required for the temperature of compost to reach $60^{\circ}C$ showed different patterns. There was no pathogenic microorganism in the treatments which reached a high temperature in a short period of time, but, in the treatments which reached a high temperature over a Long period of time, the pathgenic microorganism was not still alive.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of various fertilizers on the growth and yield of tree peony Moutan cortex RADICIS from 1990 to 1994. The paeonol content, a main medical ingredient of tree peony, was 0.5% in the control, and the contents of the chemical fertilizer(N-P-K) and the two-kind compound fertilizer treatments were $0.26{\sim}0.41%$, and those were lower than $0.40{\sim}0.45$ of the compost, the fowl dropping manure and the organic fertilizer treatments. The weights off dry root(radix) rind were increased by 42% in the fowl dropping manure treatment and by 49% in the compost treatment compared with 151kg/10a in the control. All things considered, compost, fowl dropping manure and organic fertilizer were more effective than chemical fertilizers for the culture of tree peony.
This research investigates the quality changes during composting of bagasse and pig manure amended with 30% of surfactant-coated charcoal (SC). Two treatments, 30% uncoated charcoal (UC) amendment and no charcoal (NC) amendment, were done as control. Charcoal was coated with 0.37 mM tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDMA), a cationic surfactant, at the dosage of 10 g/L. At the end of the composting period, the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of SC amendment was 9.7; whereas, the C/N ratios of UC and NC amendment were 12.6 and 21.4, respectively. Plant nutrients contents of the compost produced from SC amendment were 20.7 mg $NH_4{^+}-N/g$, 42.8 mg $NO_3{^-}-N/g$, and 41.7 mg P/g. High nitrate and phosphate concentrations in SC amendment were due to the adsorption of these anions on the positive charge of TDMA. Desorption of plant nutrients retained in the compost pellets was also investigated. It was predicted that nitrate was fully desorbed from a pellet at 23 days for SC amendment, which was later than UC (14 days) and NC (10 days) amendment. A slow release of nitrate from the compost pellet will reduce the nitrate leaching into the environment. Thus, the adding of SC in the compost pile is one of the alternative methods to improve the quality of compost and plant nutrient retention.

Poultry manure compost (PMC) as the organic fertilizer sources has a high nutrient content such as nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, and its properties been affected by bulking agent. This study was conducted to evaluate properties of mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) containing PMC composting with sawdust and peat moss as bulking agent, and to measure a characteristics of plant growth by their application. The MOF containing 10~30 % PMC had a coincidency with its guideline in Korea. As applied with MOF containing PMC composting with sawdust (PMCS) or MOF containing PMC composting with peat moss (PMCP), dry weight of plant was increased in MOF treatments blending with 10~30 % PMCS or 10~30 % PMCP. In correlation coefficient between blending ratio of PMC in MOFs and plant growth indexes, PMCS was not significantly different, but its PMCP a positive effect (P<0.05). These results indicated that PMC was able to blend about 10~30 % as mixed organic fertilizer source, and its application increased in plant growth.
Cellulose-digesting bacteria were isolated from hindgut of Allomyrina dichotoma (Coleoptera: Dynastidae). The bacterial isolates were identified as Yersinia sp. and Bacillus sp. The addition of the identified bacteria to diet increased growth rate of the cetoniid beetle, Protaetia brevitarsis senlensis (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae), probably by digesting cellulose nutrient contained in the oak tree sawdust diet. An additive of wheat flour at more than 10% to the sawdust diet significantly enhanced growth of P. brevitarsis senlensis. Trimmed branches of apple trees have been disposed in the apple farms and could be used for a diet component of the cetoniid beetle when the cellulose-digesting bacteria were mixed with the derived-sawdust. Resulting manure from mass rearing of P. brevitarsis senlensis contained high organic matters and trace amounts of toxic metals. When the manure were splayed on soil, it was effective as a natural compost and significantly stimulated lettuce growth. This research suggests a model technology to use cellulose-digesting bacteria to use for culturing grub, which results in natural recycles of trimmed branches in apple farms as grub diet, and to use grub manure as a natural compost.

This study was performed about composting in a batch reactor of laboratory scale using garbage waste and swine waste. Sawdust and coconut peat were materials to control optimum moisture, C/N ratio and specific gravity in the study. Comparing compost using only sawdust with compost using sawdust and coconut peat, the latter was higher at reduction rate and decomposition rate. Coconut peat was accelerated aerobic fermentation, because it had moisture holding ability, initial moisture was low, ventilation was good and control of optimum specific gravity was possible. Compost by only garbage waste was under standard of manure. but mixtures in same proportion of garbage waste and swine waste producted high quality compost. CEC value was average 63.8me/100g. The initial C/N ratio of compost was regulated effectively because of high C/N ratio of sawdust. As the C/N ratio(>40) was higher, reduction rate was higher. During the composting C/N ratio was improved more and more.
