This study was carried out to evaluate the soil dehydrogenase activity and microbial biomass C with soil type and land use in cropland of JeJu region. Soil chemical properties, dehydrogenase activity, and microbial biomass C were analyzed after sampling from upland (50 sites), orchard (50 sites), paddy (30 sites), horticultural facility (30 sites) in March. Average pH values was at 6.3 in upland soil, however soil chemical properties showed a large spatial variations in both orchard and horticultural facility soil. The Zn and Cu contents increased by the continuous application of pig manure compost in some citrus orchard soil. Soil dehydrogenase activity and microbial biomass C were higher in non-volcanic ash than in volcanic ash soil regardless of land use type. Soil dehydrogenase activity was two to four times higher in upland than in the others. It was at 38.7 ug TPF $24^{h-1}g^{-1}$ in non-volcanic ash of upland soil. Microbial biomass C content was very high in horticultural facility soil and it showed at 216.8 $mg\;kg^{-1}$ in non-volcanic ash. Soil dehydrogenase activity showed a positive correlation with organic matter ($r^2$=0.59), Zn ($r^2$=0.65), and Cu ($r^2$=0.66) in non-volcanic ash horticultural facility soil. There was a negative correlation ($r^2$=0.57) between soil organic matter and dehydrogenase activity in volcanic ash upland soil.
The application of sludge wastes into agricultural fields has been increasing annually in Korea. In particular, sewage sludge application has been widely accepted in decades. Sewage sludge application aid in the recycling of essential nutrients and act as a source of organic matter improving the structure and water-holding properties of the soil. The efficient use of sludge wastes, however, requires an individual assessment of waste products. This study assessed the biological characteristics of organic waste-treated lysimeter soils and develop its indicator to assess the soil health of organic waste-treated lysimeter soils. Several analytical techniques more recently developed such as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), and community level substrate utilization (CLSU) fingerprints allow for detailed analyses of soil microbial communities. PLFA and RFLP was, therefore, used in the study to characterize the microbial communities in soil without the need to isolate individual fungi and bacteria. PLFA, RFLP and CLSU have been utilized to assess microbial characteristics of the lysimeter soils with four different sludge wastes for eight consecutive years. Each of these methods was analyzed for a different aspect of soil microbial characteristics. The study would disclose those methods yielded highly reproductive results for each soil and allow distinguishing the soils based on the structures of specific geneand PLFA-pools more than CLSU fingerprints. PLFA methods, especially, revealed the same relative similarities of the treated soils based on cluster analysis of the biological characteristics. Pig manure compost-treated soil, however, was only the same relative resemblance among the three methods. These results indicated that PLFA easily assessed the biological soil characterization.

The purpose of this paper is to derive priorities and implications for the organic resource conservation policy in the livestock sector. We conducted a survey on the importance-performance of the organic waste resource reclamation of livestock sector using a 5-point Likert scale. The importance average for the resource recycling of livestock organic waste was 3.63 and the average of performance was 3.04. As a result of the IPA on livestock manure recycling measures, it is necessary to improve feed quality, establish a local recycling system, increase demand for compost and liquid, enhance customer linkages, and develop cost reduction technologies. It requires intensive support for promoting the spread of odor reduction technologies and integrated management of biomass. It is necessary to introduce mid- and long-term measures such as the revival of feed in tariff, promote by-product feeding, establish solid fuel process management standards, create hygiene safety standards, develop eco-beads and promotion of feed conversion. It is required to strengthen support for the development of odor reduction technologies and prepare consultative organizations among related departments, develop eco-friendly solid fuel technology, and support policies for renewable energy certification.
Application of sludge wastes into the field may help soil fertility with physical, chemical and biological properties. Efficient use of sludge waste, however, requires an individual assessment of the waste products. A lot of experiment into the organic waste-treated soils has been done for decade. However, studies have not been carried out on the assessment of agricultural soil by Basidiomycota. This study was assessed the influence of sludge application on soil healthy in agricultural upland soils. The organic wastes selected for long-term application experiment in this study were municipal sewage sludge (MSS), industrial sewage sludge (ISS), leather processing sludge (LS), alcohol fermentation processing sludge (FS), and pig manure compost (PMC). To develop the soil healthy assesment method, soil samples were diluted by 20X with distilled water. After shaking at 200rpm for 30 minutes, the shaked sample was mixed on PDA(Potato Dextrose Agar). And sterilized at $121^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. Coriolus hirsutus (MKACC 50560) was inoculated on petri-dish including PDA mixed sample. After the media was incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for five days, the mycelial growth of C. hirsutus was measured. When the mycelial growth on sample media was compared with growth on media contained PDA only, well grown media contained sample soil was assesed as healthy soil. The results suggest that the simple method by Coriolus hirsutus is a handy way to assess the healthy of waste sludge-applied upland soils.

This investigation into unfermented soybeans, which were left from the soybeans used to make cheongguk-jang, was conducted to find out its availability of the application to the environmental-friendly fertilizers. The test of cultivating lettuce, using 1/5000a Wagner pot, was carried out inside the affiliated farm glasshouse, belonged to University of Chung-Nam National. The results showed that in the category of leaf length, the control and cheongguk-jang soybeans treatment plot had similar outcomes and in the category of the extract of the cheongguk-jang soybeans, it increased by about 26~33%. And in the categories of width and number of leaves it showed that the extract treatment increased by about 9~20%, in compared to the control. Finally, in the category of fresh weight, the results showed that cheongguk-jang soybean and the extract of the cheongguk-jang soybean effectively increased by about 9~27%, and that pig manure compost treatment plot with the extract of the cheongguk-jang soybean also significantly increased by about 26%, compared to the control. Accordingly, the unfermented soybean left in the production of cheongguk-jang and the extract of the cheongguk-jang soybean are considerably appeared to be valuable environmental-friendly fertilizers.
This study was carried out to know the effect of urea addition for composting of paper mill sludge(PMS). For the purpose. PMSs containing 0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 6% urea were composted at aerated static pile(ASP) for about 80day periods. During the composting, the basic physical, chemical, and biological parameters such as temperature, color. C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity, and phytotoxic test were investigated. From the measurement of the parameters, 0~3% urea-containing PMS except for 6% urea-containing PMS showed to be normally stabilized. Thus among these treatments, 0% and 3% urea-containing PMS were applied at agitated bed system(ABS), a pilot plant of a large scale, to evaluate the possibility of practical use. Considering to the changes of the parameters investigated during composting in ASP and ABS, PMS showed to be successfully stabilized in the two facilities. However, when composted with PMS and urea, even the final PMS compost stabilized for a period enough brought out the bright grayish color. So it may be necessary to add a subsidiary amendments such as animal manure to form brown-colored products.

This study was conducted to evaluate the field application of the developed recommendation system in organic rice (Oriza sativa L.) paddy and to investigate the mineral nitrogen content in soil and rice productivity. According to the developed system, hairy vetch (HV), rye+rapeseed oil cake (R+OC), rapeseed oil cake (OC) for only basal fertilization (OC-B), OC for split application (OC-S), pig manure compost (PMC), and chemical fertilizer (CHM) were applied to paddy soil at the rate of 107~133 kg N/ha. Results were followed, unhulled rice yield of OC-S (111%), OC-B (110), R+OC (106), HV (101), and PMC (96) were no significantly different with CHM (100). Also there was positive correlation (R2=0.803*) between unhulled rice yield and cumulative inorganic N in soil. For nitrogen use efficiency of rice, OC-B, OC-S, and R+OC were not significantly different with CHM. In conclusions, the developed organic materials use recommendation system was effective for organic rice productivity. It could be useful for organic farmer to apply the organic materials use recommendation system for rice.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature on soil microbial biomass, enzyme activities, and PLFA content in the volcanic(VAS) and the non-volcanic ash soil(NVAS). The soils were treated with organic materials such as organic fertilizer pelleted(OFPL), organic fertilizer powdered(OFPD), pig manure compost(PMC), and food waste compost(FWC). Two grams of organic materials were well mixed with 30g of dried volcanic and non-volcanic ash soil(< 2 mm) with 50% of soil moisture content. And the soils were incubated at 10, 20, $30^{\circ}C$ in incubator. Soils were analysed on the incubation times as followed; soil pH, total nitrogen, organic matter(at 75, 150, 270 days), microbial biomass C and PLFA (at 75, 270 days), microbial biomass N and soil enzyme(at 150, 270 days). pH values of soils treated with PMC and FWC had no changes on soil type, and incubation temperature. However, the pH was increased with temperature in the soils treated with OFPL. The changes in NVAS was higher than in VAS. Soil microbial biomass C content were high in the condition of high temperature and organic fertilizers treatment in VAS. But the contents were gradually decreased with incubation period in both NVAS and VAS. Soil microbial biomass N was high in NVAS treated with organic fertilizers and in VBS treated with PMC and FWC. PLFA content was higher in NVBS than in VBS at 75 days but showed high in VBS at 270 days. Urease activity of NVBS treated with OFPL showed $10^{\circ}C$ (75.0)> $20^{\circ}C$ (16.3)>$30^{\circ}C$ ($4.6ug\;NH{_4-}N\;g^{-1}\;2h^{-1}$) at 150 days. It were decreased gradually high temperature and time passes. And it showed high at $10^{\circ}C$ in VBS. Glucosidase activity was higher in NVBS than in VBS. Correlation coefficient of between soil microbial biomass C and microbial activity indicators showed that PLFA was high significantly at $r^2=0.91$ in NVBS and ${\beta}-glucosidase$ was $r^2=0.83$ in VBS. Soil microbial activities showed differences in the relative sensitivities of soil type and soil temperature.

Integration of crop-livestock farming has been a problem-solving mode for abatement of environmental pollution and recovery of resources in recent years. The objectives of this study were 1) to suggest the customized integration of crop-livestock farming model reflecting the regional characteristics through in-depth analysis of case study and 2) to analyze the livestock nutrients flow in terms of three primary elements as nitrogen(N), phosphorous(P), and potassium(K). The personal interview and survey were carried out in 2012 for a total of 161 farms from four different regions(NS, NW, JJ, YC) in South Korea. The mass balance analysis was used to suggest and evaluate the models for two sites(JJ and YC). The results showed that NS and NW sites produced relatively more livestock manure than the sites of YC and JJ because of the regional differences in livestock numbers and urbanization. The models were suggested for the site JJ and site YC, and 'two track model(energy and resource recovery)' and 'dispersal type model' were assigned respectively. For the nutrient flows, the releasing P and K with new models had increased up to 7%, while N release had decreased down to 15% in both YC and JJ sites compared to the present treatment system. Estimated value showed that there was oversupply of N (719 ton/yr) and $P_2O_5$ (1,269 ton/yr) in YC and deficiency of N (671 ton/yr) and excessive $P_2O_5$ (32 ton/yr) in JJ respectively. Therefore, P runoff has to be considered an eutrophication occurs in rural small stream when an integration of crop-livestock farm system is applied into both sites.
To get well matured farm yard manure from ricestraw as quickly as possible during winter season, straw piles wrapped with polyethylene film and/or straw thatch were stored in the vinyl house or open air. Their maturities and changes of temperature in heap were investigated from the beginning of December 1983 to March of next year. Heat increment in vinyl house was high $2-5^{\circ}C$ than at open air at the lowest temperature but it didn't rise over the freezing point. However, the highest temperature was arisen over than $20^{\circ}C$ averagely at the vinylhouse compared to those of open air during three months. Temperature in piles of straw manure was reached to about $70^{\circ}C$ in maximum and rose again very rapidly after repiling in the vinyl house, whereas increment of temperature after repiling was delayed and took long times to reach the maximum temperature at open air. Wrapping with P.E. film also affected the insulation of decomposing heat of straw pile and promoted the repeat of piling even at open air. By these results, ricestraw would be decomposed rapidly by insulation with P.E. film in the vinyl house and could be reached to matured compost for application to field on next spring season. P.E. film covered for vinyl house was endured until May of next year without tear by weathering.
