  • This paper is to investigate the effects of the asymmetrical support stiffness on the stability of a supercritical driveshaft with asymmetrical shaft stiffness and anisotropic bearings. The equations of motion is derived for a system including a rigid disk, a massless flexible asymmetric shaft, anisotropic bearings and a support beam. The Floquet theory is applied to perform the stability analysis with the variation of the support stiffness, the shaft asymmetry, the shaft damping and the shaft speed. The results show that the asymmetric support stiffness is closely related to the stability caused by primary resonance as well as the supercritical operation. First, the stiffness variation can stabilize the system around primary resonance by weakening the parametric resonance from the shaft asymmetry. Second, it also improve the stability characteristics at a supercritical operation when the support stiffness is not so high relative to the shaft stiffness.

  • Variations of springback in stamped parts are induced by the uncontrollable noises including the variation of incoming material properties, lubrication and other forming process parameters. Reduction of springback variation is very important during springback compensation processes on stamping dies and assembly processes. To reduce the variation of springback, a robust optimization methodology which uses complex method combined with orthogonal array is proposed. The proposed method is applied to the robust design of U-channel die for the reduction of side wall curl. It is shown that the drawbead and die radius of U-channel draw die can be effectively optimized by the proposed method.

  • This study analyzed thevariation in the cutting force when the cutting area of a terrace volume is machined, which is generally left after the rough cutting of a sculptured surface. The numerically simulated results for the cutting forces are compared with cutting force measurements by considering the theoretical prediction of the cutting area formation and specific cutting volume. The variation in the cutting force is measured using a dynamometer installed on a machining center for 19 different kinds of test pieces, which are selected according to the variation in the terrace volume factor, tool diameter factor, and cutting depth factor. As a result, it is verified that the cutting forces evaluated by the numerical analysis coincide with the measured cutting forces, and it is proposed as a practical cutting force prediction model.

  • Springback is a very typical dimensional discrepancy phenomenon, which occurs usually on the final stamping parts after the tool loading is removed. Variation of springback leads to amplified variations and problems during assembly of the stamped components, in turn, resulting in quality issues. The variations in the properties of the incoming material and process parameters are the main causes of springback variation. In this research, a robust design methodology which combines orthogonal array based experimental design and design space reduction skim to reduce the springback variation for advanced high strength steel parts in sheet metal forming is suggested. The concept of design space reduction is adapted in the experimental design setup to improve the quality of the obtained solution. The effectiveness of the proposed procedures is illustrated through a robust design of springback in metal forming process of a cross member of auto body.

  • The arbitrarily-bended pipe is widely used in a heat exchanger system. Thus, the pipe bending process has important role in performance and productivity of heat exchanger system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bending process for manufacturing of sound pipe. And, the spring-back effect and the variation of pipe thickness should be controlled effectively. The change of spring-back ratio and the thickness variation of pipe according to the change of bending radius, bending angle and pipe thickness are analyzed by FEM analysis. The analytic results are compared with the experimental data, accordingly the results show good agreement. The method of the analysis can be applied for manufacturing of precision bended pipe.

  • The collaboration hub has been developed since 2004 as an online collaboration space, which supports the various collaborative works amongst small and medium enterprises using information sharing, collaboration project management, and project history management. Because of the change of manufacturing environment and rapid development of information technologies, it should be evolved from the existing version called Collaboration Hub 1.0. Recently, a lot of manufacturing enterprises know the importance of business process management(BPM) and start to introduce BPM systems. Our research group has developed the new version of Collaboration Hub 1.0 called Collaboration Hub 2.0 which contains the BPM concept, the consistent product data management, and the specialized functions overcoming the various variation of manufacturing. This study scrutinizes the meaning and role of the Collaboration Hub 2.0 and introduces an application study of it to the value chain of automobile module development consisted of a leading company and subcontractors. The case study covers the definition, execution and monitoring of collaboration process, the specialized functions overcoming the manufacturing variation and the key performance index of collaboration business.

  • Grinding System is very difficult to examine closely wear phenomenon or dynamic characterastic because it is very complex and different from a general cutting system, Considering automatization and precision it is very important to examine closely grinding system. In this study grinding wheel surface is acquired by using computer vision system in order to explain wear and loading phenomenon. We investigate the relationship between wear and Fourier spectrum of acquired image and observe the entropy variation in the process of manufacturing.

  • Tolerance analysis of auto body requires the consideration of its compliance because of potentially significant deformation during the spot-weld assembly process. In this paper, a relatively recent method for such analyses is briefly introduced as one can find in the literature. In this method, it is important to take into account of the covariance between the sources of variation as they are closely located, which is the case in most auto body assembly. However, it is often impossible to know such covariance, for example, when a new car is being developed. Therefore, a mechanics-based method is proposed in this paper to estimate the covariance among the sources of variation by finite element analyses and simple statistical computations. The proposed method is illustrated by applying it to a three-dimensional model of real front wheel housing.

  • Process Capability indices(PCIs) have been widely used in manufacturing industries to provide a quantitative measure of process performance. PCIs have been developed to represent process capability more exactly. The traditional process capability indices Cp, Cpk, Cpm, $Cpm^+$ have been used to characterize process performance on the basis of univariate quality characteristics. Cp, Cpk consider the process variation, Cpm considers both the process variation and the process deviation from target and $Cpm^+$ considers economic loss for the process deviation from target In the previous studies, only one designated location on each part is measured. System process capability index even though in single process, multiple measurement locations on each part are required to calculate the reliable process capability. In manufacturing industry, there is growing interest in quantitative measures of process variation under multivariate quality characteristics. The multivariate process capability index incorporates both the process variation and the process deviation from target or considers expected loss caused by the process deviation from target. In this paper, we compare various process capability indices and propose the application method of PCIs.

  • In this paper, we report a robust steering control using time delay control for the vehicle dynamics variation due to tire/road contact condition variation, the lateral disturbance force due to the side wind, and the yaw disturbance moment due to the difference between the left and right tires' pneumatic pressure. We controlled the side slip and yaw damping compensation for rapid steering at the high velocity of the vehicle. Based on the developed control, the driver can only consider the desired path without concerning on the vehicle dynamics variation, disturbances, and undesired side slip and yaw oscillations. Simulation results show that robustness from the vehicle dynamics variation and disturbances was achieved by using the developed time delay control. We evaluated the side slip and yaw damping compensation capability for the rapid steering at the high velocity of the vehicle in the cases of three control methods.
