  • Recent progress in manufacture of hot and cold rolled steel strip products and their applications were reviewed. The main trend in the technological development has been to meet the customers' requests for quality improvement and cost reduction. The weight reduction to reduce the fuel consumption is the main issue in the automotive industry and, therefore, various steels have been developed to improve formability as well as strength. The steels include super-EDDQ steels, bainitic steels, TRIP steels, etc. In the oil industry, efforts have been focused to improve strength together with either low temperature toughness or HIC/SSCC resistance. The packaging industry is also a highly competitive market, and steel and canmaking companies have worked cooperatively to develop cost-effective canmaking processes as well as high performance steels. This type of cooperation has also been found important in other industries such as the appliance and electronic industries for the benefits of both steelmakers and customers.

  • Advances in computer and sensor technology have made it possible to obtain superlarge manufacturing process data in real time, letting us extract meaningful information from these superlarge data sets. We propose a systematic data analysis procedure which field engineers can apply easily to manufacture quality products. The procedure consists of data cleaning and data analysis stages. Data cleaning stage is to construct a database suitable for statistical analysis from the original superlarge manufacturing process data. In the data analysis stage, we suggest a graphical easy-to-implement approach to extract practical information from the cleaned database. This study will help manufacturing companies to achieve six sigma quality.

  • Our furniture industry is rapidly changing due to the declining economy. The existing weak furniture industry in Korea has yielded its inability to complete in a very competitive marketplace. The furniture companies lack the special necessary skills and professional knowledge necessary to design and manufacture furniture. Therefore, constant effort by designers and managers is needed in order to strengthen the Korean furniture industry's strategy and advance it into becoming a recognized player in the area of furniture design, worldwide, Designers has to have systematic training in order to have insight into upcoming international trends and incorporate new manufacturing techniques immediately This study will analyze the curriculums related to furniture design departments in Universities and technical schools in Germany, a leader in the furniture industry. It will present new educational ideas and program for furniture designers in the Korean universities.

  • From the first customer located right at the substation to the last customer at the end of the line, voltage must be held within close limits, so the voltage regulation is more important than the thermal limit. On a typical distribution system during the peak load period, the voltage drop may be serious enough to cause unsatisfactory operation of home appliances in the residential area, and present many problems to manufacturing industries, where the voltage must be maintained within close limits to insure smooth operation. Among all the factors contributing to voltage drop in the distribution system, the voltage drop in the distribution transformer may account for 30% of this figure. If we can eliminate this factor, the power companies can provide better quality electricity to more customers with the existing distribution facilities, thus saving on initial investment costs. Taking all these problems into consideration, the author undertook the design of a capacitive transformer which would give zero voltage drop at rated load and at 80% lagging power factor while incorporating overload features to withstand 400% overload for at least 100 seconds. The following are the results obtained through design, manufacture and test of an initial experimental transformer built with these specific purposes.

  • An issue of globalized and competitive business environment is a transformation of manufacturing strategy for rapidly product development. To copy with these trends, building up a market from various product is becoming conspicuous the core strategy of manufacture. Therefore, it is increasing of necessity for the environment of collaborative product development. As a part of corresponding for these demands, we propose the method that allows easy and rapid integration of legacy resources within the company and between departments. The proposed framework can easily construct a distributed environment for collaborative design between departments in the companies. It was implemented using CO/sup TM/ based on DOME (Distributed Object-based Modeling Environment) that is knowledge based engineering solution.

  • Value can be defined as function divided by cost. The ultimate goal of VE (Value Engineering) is to simultaneously reduce cost and to enhance function in given projects. In general, there are eight phases (Selection, Investigation, Speculation, Evaluation, Development. Presentation, Implementation, and Audit) to perform VE. This paper presents analysis of important factors for VE in construction fields using QFD (Quality Function Deployment) technique. QFD was introduced in 1972 to help design supertanker in Mitsubish's shipyards in Kob, Japan and formally defined by the American Supplier Institute in 1987 as a system for translating consumer requirements into appropriate company requirements at every stage, from research, through product design and development, to manufacture, distribution, installation, and marketing, sales and services. The objective of this paper is to provide and analyze the trend on the viewpoint of efficient value engineering of field workers. The data are collected by questionnaires. The samples for this study are chosen from 13 companies in Korea during 2 months (2002. 7 ∼ 2002. 8). The results of this study will play an important role not only for the efficient value engineering but also for preparing of life cycle cost analysis.

  • Manufacturers collect and analyze field reliability data to enhance the quality and reliability of their products and to improve customer satisfaction. To reduce the data collecting and maintenance costs, the amount of data maintained for evaluating product quality and reliability should be minimized. With this in mind, some industrial companies assemble warranty databases by gathering data from different sources for a particular time period. This “marginal count failure data” does not provide (i) the number of failures by when the product entered service, (ii) the number of failures by product age, or (iii) information about the effects of the operating season or environment. This article describes a method for estimating age-based claim rates from marginal count failure data. It uses covariates to identify variations in claims relative to variables such as manufacturing characteristics, time of manufacture, operating season or environment. A Poisson model is presented, and the method is illustrated using warranty claims data for two electrical products.

  • The second volume of the Iwakura Reports is the writing on Britain. What is interesting, here, is the fact that the mission had visited the large factories in the major industrial cities. The editor of the reports in particular recorded the productive processes of goods at many factories, and wrote his own impressions of the landscapes of those cities. Those records let us know the real situation of the British economy at the time. Japanese historians admit that the activities of the Iwakura mission largely contributed to Japan's modernization. But there are few studies that analyzed the second volume of the reports which had mainly described modern factories and industrial cities. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the records of the reports on the British industry, and to examine what they recognized from the industrial civilization. The Iwakura Reports would furnish important information to the notables that had initiated the early industrialization in Japan. After the mission's visit, some British companies' export to Japan increased rapidly. What is more important, however, is that the British economy was losing its own vitality in the late Victorian age in which Japan began to be rapidly industrialized. During the Japanese industrialization, some Japanese diplomats and factory-owners might have realized the decline of the British industry. Britain began to be overtaken by her rival countries such as the United States and Germany. The Iwakura Reports do not let us know the change of the British manufacture in the late nineteenth century. Later, the leading figures of Japan's industrialization might focus on the rise of Germany or America. As the Iwakura mission had visited Britain in the early stage of the competition between Britain and other rival states, they could not know the real situation of the British economy. Furthermore, with compiling his manuscripts, the editor of the reports could not help being based upon the factory-owners' explanations and their brochures. This is the reason why he focused only on the excellence and competitiveness of British manufacture.
