  • The FSA(Force Sensitive Application) system measures hand force by using force resistance sensors. Compared to conventional hand force measurement systems such as Lafayette hand dynamometer and Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer, the FSA system can be applied to analyze use of hand forces while the hand is manipulating objects for a task, However, the measurement performance of the FSA system has not been objectively evaluated. The present study tested the FSA system in terms of stability, repeatability, accuracy, and linearity. It is shown that the FSA system has good stability (CV$\leq$0.02) and linearity($R^2$=0.82), but has low repeatability(CV=$0.11{\sim}0.19$) and accuracy(22% of underevaluation on average). This performance result indicates that measurements from the FSA system should be used for relative comparison rather than for absolute comparison.

  • The parametric approaches to sliding mode design are newly proposed for the class of multivariable systems. Our approach is based on an explicit formula for representing all the slid-ing modes using the Lyapunov matrices of full order. By manipulating Lyapunov matrices, the sliding modes which satisfy the design criteria such as the quadratic performance optimization and robust stability to parametric uncertainty, etc., can be easily obtained. The proposed ap-proach enables us to adopt a variety of Lyapunov- (or Riccati-) based approaches to the sliding mode design. Applications to the quadratic performance optimization problem, uncertain systems, systems with uncertain state delay, and the pole-clustering problem are discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that applies matrix decomposition technique to the connection of actuator capabilities of each robot to object acceleration limits for multiple cooperative robot systems. The robot systems under consideration are composed of several robot manipulators and each robot contacts a single object to carry the object while satisfying the constraints described in kinematics as well as dynamics. By manipulating kinematic and dynamic equations of both robots and objects, we at first derive a matrix relating joint torques with object acceleration, manipulate the null space of the matrix, and then we decompose the matrix into three parts representing indeterminancy, connectivity, and redundancy. With the decomposed matrix we derive the boundaries of object accelerations from given joint actuators. To show the validity of the proposed method some examples are given in which the results can be expected by intuitive observation.

  • Privacy-preserving collaborative filtering schemes are becoming increasingly popular because they handle the information overload problem without jeopardizing privacy. However, they may be susceptible to shilling or profile injection attacks, similar to traditional recommender systems without privacy measures. Although researchers have proposed various privacy-preserving recommendation frameworks, it has not been shown that such schemes are resistant to profile injection attacks. In this study, we investigate two memory-based privacy-preserving collaborative filtering algorithms and analyze their robustness against several shilling attack strategies. We first design and apply formerly proposed shilling attack techniques to privately collected databases. We analyze their effectiveness in manipulating predicted recommendations by experimenting on real data-based benchmark data sets. We show that it is still possible to manipulate the predictions significantly on databases consisting of masked preferences even though a few of the attack strategies are not effective in a privacy-preserving environment.

  • This paper demonstrates details of thermal behavior of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) by using the principal component analysis based two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (PCA2D) through eigenvalue manipulating transformation (EMT). By uniformly lowering the power of a set of eigenvalues associated with the original data, the smaller eigenvalues becomes more prominent and the subtle contribution from minor components is now highlighted much more strongly than the original data. Thus, the subtle difference of thermal behavior of LB film of PtBMA from minor components, which is not readily detectable in the conventional 2D correlation analysis, is much more noticeable than the original data. PCA2D correlation spectra with EMT operation for the temperature-dependent IR spectra of LB film of PtBMA reveal the hidden property of phase transition processes during heating.

  • The main purpose of this research is to develop a program supporting landscape planting design on AutoCAD basis using AutoLISP and DCL language. Current CAD use in landscape architecture field is mainly focused on customizing plant symbols for supporting two dimensional drafting rather than three dimensional consideration. This program is composed of eight module a such as PLANT module for inserting plant symbols, LABEL module for labeling task, SIMULATION module for simulating plant growth and seasonal color variation, TABLE module for generating plant table automatically, BUILDING module, BLOCK module, UTILITY module for deleting, transforming, shading symbols and DB MANAGER module for manipulating data. Design automation ability using automatic object recognition technique in this program allows AutoCAD to be used as a design tool in addition to its main role as a drafting tool through supporting landscape designers to generate many alternatives in the early phase of design.

  • We have developed WinBioDBs with Windows interfaces, which include importing modules and searching interfaces for 10 major public databases such as GenBank, PIR, SwissProt, Pathway, EPD, ENZYME, REBASE, Prosite, Blocks, and Pfam. User databases can be constructed with searching results of queries and their entries can be edited. The program is a stand-alone database searching program on Windows PC. Database update features are supported by importing raw database files and indexing after downloading them. Users can adjust their own searching environments and report format and construct their own projects consisting of a combination of a local databases. WinBioDBs are implemented with VC++ and its database is based on MySQL.

  • The ability of understanding the number and number systems, grasping the properties of number systems, and manipulating number systems is the foundation to understand algebra. It is useful to deepen students' mathematical understanding of number systems and operations. The authentic understanding of numbers and operations can make it possible for the students to manipulate algebraic symbols, to represent relationship among sets of numbers, and to use variables to investigate the properties of sets of numbers. The high school students need to understand the number systems from more abstract perspective. The purpose of this study is to study on understanding and application ability of eleventh graders of basic properties of operations with real numbers.

  • Process adjustment is a complimentary tool to process monitoring in process control. Process adjustment directs on maintaining a process output close to a target value by manipulating another controllable variable, by which significant process improvement can be achieved. Therefore, this approach can be applied to the 'Improve' stage of Six Sigma strategy. Though the optimal control rule minimizes process variability in general, it may not properly function when special causes occur in underlying process, resulting in off-target bias and increased variability in the adjusted output process, possibly for long periods. In this paper, we consider a responsive feedback control system and the minimum mean square error control rule. The bias in the adjusted output process is investigated in a general framework, especially focussing on stationary underlying process and the special cause of level shift type. Illustrative examples are employed to illustrate the issues discussed.
