The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of jaw growth in a growing rabbits, when they are subjected to refractive force and after removal of refractive force. The experimental animals were Oryctolagus couniculus, male rabbits of 4 weeks of age. The mandible is retracted with 200gm in force of each side to the posterior and superior direction for 14 hours a day. Then rabbits were used as control group. First experimental group received refractive force for 4 weeks. Second experimental group received for 8 weeks. Third experimental group received for 12 weeks. True lateral films and dorso-ventral films were taken before wearing appliances, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks after wearing appliance. The changes of rabbits jaw growth were observed radiographically. The findings were as follows : 1. Mandibular refractive force decreased total mandibular length, mandibular condylar length and angular length. 2. Mandibular refractive force increased nasal height, condylar width and angular width. 3. Mandibular refractive force decreased mandibular lenght growth but increased mandibular width growth. 4. There is no phenomena of catch-up growth after refractive force removal.
The purpose of the present study were to disclose whether the depth of the mandibular antegonial notch can be used as an indicator of mandibular growth potential. The patients composed of 76 samples and were classified following 3 groups, based on the depth of mandibular antegonial notch : Deep notch group (more than 3mm), Neutral notch group (1-3mm), Shallow notch group (less than 1mm). For each case, the first lateral cephalograms were taken prior to the start of treatment and the second films 3-4 years after. The results were as follows; 1. Deep notch group had a shorter corpus, less ramus height and greater genial angle than did Shallow notch group. 2. Deep notch group had a more retrusive mandibular position than Shallow notch group. 3. Deep notch group had longer total anterior facial height and longer anterior lower facial height group. 4. Deep notch group grow vertical clockwise growth pattern, while Shallow notch group grow horizontal counterclockwise growth pattern. 5. Deep notch group had less mandibular growth than Shallow notch group during observation period.

Object : Patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular prognathism have various causes and clinical features. So, it is difficult to find a satisfactory treatment method functionally and esthetically. Every traditional classification and interpretation to find etiopathogenesis and/or to establish ideal surgical modality has many limitations because it can't be applied simply to various conditions of patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular prognathism. Therefore, we employ a new classification to interpret more details of the morphologic change of mandible and the spatial change of mandible and maxilla. Materials and Methods : Using panoramic X-ray films, PA cephalograms and submentovertex films of 126 patients diagnosed with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular prognathism as resources, the following results were gathered after analyzing each characteristics through distributing the patterns according to the morphological mandibular asymmetry and mandibular and maxillary spatial asymmetry. Results : Almost frequency of morphological mandibular asymmetry was shown. In case of condyle-ramus elongation and body elongation group, it's frequency was the highest. Higher frequency of compensating vertical growth was shown on the side of over growing maxilla in case of vertical length difference between left and right condyle-ramus. On the other hand, higher frequency of no compensating vertical growth difference between left and right side was shown in case of no vertical length difference in condyle-ramus. Spatial mandibular asymmetry generally occurred when there was no morphological mandibular asymmetry. Correlation between condyle length difference and condyle-ramus length difference between left and right side was very high, but correlation between condyle length difference and body length difference, and correlation between condyle length difference and body vertical length difference was low. Conclusion : In case of patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular prognathism, it is suggested that various pattern of facial asymmetry is occurred by the independent growth of each unit rather than dependent growth of other unit by major growth unit abnormality. Due to the untypical pattern and the various asymmetry occurring according to the changes of each mandibular growth unit, it is considered that an appropriate surgical method should be searched based on the accurate recognition of the each pattern for patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular prognathism.
Purpose: Craniofacial structure form results from the adaptation to morphologic and functional changes in their neighboring structures for a mutual balance. The purpose of this study is classification of maxillomandibular complex growth pattern follow by cranial base growth pattern. And this study is identifying the correlation between maxilla-mandibular complex growth pattern and orthodontic criteria. Methods: 142 Class III malocclusion patients had orthognathic surgery at Wonkwang University Dental Hospital during April 2004 to October 2010. Patients were divided into 4 groups and the correlation between cranial base and maxillomandibular growth patterns were evaluated. Results: There was a correlation between cranial base and maxillomandibular growth patterns. Positive relationships were found between the occlusal plane, Incisor mandibular plane angle, mandibular plane, positioning of pogonion and the saddle angle, indicating maxillary growth patterns. Negative relationships were found between SNA, SNB, maxillary incisor angle and saddle angle. Positive relationships were found between the ratio of the anterior and posterior cranium, positioning of pogonion and the percentage of cranial depth indicating mandibular growth patterns. Negative relationships were found between the occlusal plane, maxillary incisor angle, mandibular plane, mandibular angle and cranial depth. Conclusion: Cranial base and maxillofacial growth patterns were correlated and the classification should be adjusted before orthognathic surgery.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of growth hormone treatment (GHT) on craniofacial growth in children of short stature. Methods: Nineteen untreated children of short stature were referred from the Pediatric Department, Yeungnam University Hospital as a subject group. All subjects had lateral cephalograms taken before, after 1 year and after 2 years of growth hormone treatment. As a reference group, we selected 19 normal children with paired sampling who matched the subjects' age and sex, from the Department of Orthodontics, Kyungpook National University Hospital. Results: Before GHT, anterior cranial base length and upper posterior facial height, posterior total facial height, mandibular ramus length, and mandibular corpus length were significantly smaller in the reference group. In angular craniofacial measurements, saddle angle and mandibular plane angle were larger. SNA and SNB were smaller in the reference group. After two years of GHT, growth hormone accelerated growth in several craniofacial components. The posterior total facial height, the anterior, posterior cranial base length, and the mandibular ramus length were increased. And the difference in mandibular plane angle and ANB values compared with the reference group was decreased. Conclusions: GHT over 2 years leads to a craniofacial catch-up growth tendency, which is pronounced in interstitial cartilage and condylar cartilage.
This study was undertaken to investigate the difference of chin morphology and mandibular form in relation to different mandibular growth direction. The subject was divided into three group i.e., control group, vertical group, and horizontal group, according to the criteria of $Bj{\ddot{o}}rk$ sum, and each group was composed of 15 females and 15 males. Medial axis analysis in addition to the routine cephalometric analysis using P.I.A.S. (personal image analysing system) was carried out to find out the differences of mandibular morphology on each group. The results were as follows: 1. The area of symphysis was larger in horizontal growth group than that of vertical growth group. 2. Protruding chin area was also larger in horizontal growth group than that of vertical growth group. 3. There was a close correlationship between protruding chin area and other form of mandible. 4. Antegonial notch depth and ramus posterior contour depth was deeper in vertical growth group than in horizontal growth group, and antegonial notch depth was more influenced by anterior part of notch than posterior part of notch. 5. Mental medial axis and incisal medial axis length, in relation to corpus medial axis length was larger in vertical growth group than in horizontal growth group.
This study was designed to investigate the growth amount and rate of mandible by the measurements of mandibular lateral surface and the relationship of peak growth increments between mandible and body height The sample consisted of twenty-five boys and fifteen girls between the ages of 6 and 13 The surface of mandible was measured from digitized roentgenocephalometric analysis (A 27 point mandibular model) The findings of this study can be summarized as follows 1 No significant difference was found between mandibular lateral surfaces of the both sexes at the ages studied. 2 The mean growth amount of mandibular lateral surface from 6 to 13 years of ages was $9\;09cm^2$ in boys and $8\;29cm^2$ in girls, and the mean growth rate was 46 07% in boys and 42 57% in girls 3 The prepubertal peak growth increment in mandible was found between the ages of 11-12 in girls and 12-13 in boys 4 The prepubertal peak growth increments of mandible occured one year later that of body height in boys and girls.

Introduction: Condylar fractures are common in the maxillofacial region, comprising 29-40 percent of all mandibular fractures, accounting for about 20-62 percent). Previous studies reported that pediatric condylar fractures can cause disorders in facial growth and function, and the treatment methods have been controversial. Recently, conservative treatment has shown good results in skeletal growth and functional recovery but the conservative treatment of pediatric condylar fractures has shown unpredictable and undesirable results in some cases, such as facial asymmetry and temporomandibular joint disorder. This study examined the specific age groups and specific mandibular condylar fracture type in growing children treated conservatively in the past. Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients (10 men and 8 women) who received conservative treatment for unilateral condylar fractures in Dankook University Dental Hospital between 2000 to 2007 were followed up for a mean period of 7.2 years. Results: In the survey of 18 pediatric patients who received conservative treatment for condylar fractures, the incidence of temporomandibular dysfunction and growth disturbance was 45% and 35%, respectively. Conclusion: In all complications, the symptoms observed most frequently was mouth opening displacement of the mandible exceeding 2 mm. The other complications of functional and growth disturbance included facial asymmetry concentrated along specific condylar types. Complications including facial asymmetry and functional and growth disturbances showed an increasing tendency according to the specific fracture types. Functional and growth disturbances in the undisplaced condylar fracture type showed a lower incidence(P <0.05). Functional and growth disturbances differed according to the fracture type, which has poor relationship with articular fossa and condyle(P <0.05). Functional and growth disturbance in the cases of the high-level condylar fracture type showed a higher incidence(P <0.05). The functional and growth disturbances of the fracture types were similar in the fragment-contact and non-contact groups(P >0.05).
The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the growth changes of mandibular symphysis and lower incisors with age. The material was 294 lateral cephalometric radiographs taken longitudinally from 6 to 13 year old children, who were not teated orthodontically. The following conclusions seem to be warranted. 1. The sex difference of the measurements of mandibular symphysis and lower incisors were not statistic ally significant. 2. There were growth increments (2.69mm in boys and 2.08mm in girls) in the total thickness of mandibular symphysis. 3. There were a great change and individual variations on the curvature of anterior border of mandibular symphysis. 4. The chin angle had a tendency to decrease progressively in both sexes. 5. There were growth increments (8.23mm in boys and 7.40mm in girls) in the anterior dental height. 6. The lower anterior teeth tended to incline labially with age.
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes of the mandible of a growing rat when they are subjected to a retractive force and those after removal of the retractive force. The experimental animals were Sprague-Dawley male rats of four weeks of age. A mandible was retracted with 50 grams of force on each side in the posterior and superior direction for 8 hours per day. The animals were sacrificed after 1 week, 2-week and 4-week force application, and after 4-week force application-4-week force removal period. The changes of rat mandibular growth following retractive force on the growing rat mandible were observed histologically and biometrically. The findings were as follows ; 1. Histologically, the thickness of the condylar cartilage was slightly reduced in the anterosuperior region with the retractive force. However, in the group of 4-week force application-4-week force removal, there was no significant difference in the thickness of the condylar cartilage. 2. There were no significant histological changes in the articular disk and glenoid fossa through the experimental period. 3. The length and anterior height of the mandible subjected to the retractive force were significantly smaller and greater than those of the control group. 4. There were no significant differences in the mandibular length between 4-week force application - 4-week force removal and the control group. 5. It was concluded that a mandibular retractive force produced inhibitory effects in the growth of the mandible, but that these effects were not sustained during mandibular growth in this experimental model.
