  • This paper presents a method for designing private networks considering response time under packet switching network environment Specifically, we propose the designing process of a private network, where the host is assumed to be synchronous and the terminals to be asynchronous, according to protocol and access lines. To calculate the response time for the networks, we use the mutual independent M/M/1 and M/W/s queueing models. Comparing the response time derived from the model with the actual one, it is found that the model yields almost same performance in a more economic way. From the experiment, it is suggested that the necessary number of lines as well as the response time for a specific network can be estimated properly by sensitivity analysis.

  • In general, there are three kinds of methods in analyzing dynamic robust design experiment: loss model approach, response function approach, and response model approach. In this talk, we review the three modeling approaches in terms of several criteria in comparison. This talk also generalizes the response model approach based on a generalized linear model. We develop a generalized two-step optimization procedure to substantially reduce the process variance by dampening the effect of both explicit and hidden noise variables. The proposed method provides more reliable results through iterative modeling of the residuals from the fitted response model. The method is compared with three existing approaches in practical examples.

  • A desirability function approach to a multiresponse problem is proposed considering process parameter fluctuation which may amplify the variance of response. It is called POE (propagation of error), which is defined as the standard deviation of the transmitted variability in the response as a function of process parameters. In order to obtain more robust process parameter setting, a new desirability function is proposed by considering POE as well as distance-to-target of response and response variance. The proposed method is illustrated using a rubber product case in Ribeiro et al. (2000).

  • Application of residential demand response (DR) programs are currently realized up to a limited extent due to customers' difficulty in manually responding to the time-differentiated prices. As a solution, this paper proposes an automatic home load management (HLM) framework to achieve the household minimum payment as well as meet the operational constraints to provide customer's comfort. The projected HLM method controls on/off statuses of responsive appliances and the charging/discharging periods of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery storage at home. This paper also studies the impacts of different time-varying tariffs, i.e., time of use (TOU), real time pricing (RTP), and inclining block rate (IBR), on the home load management (HLM). The study is effectuated in a smart home with electrical appliances, a PHEV, and a storage system. The simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HLM program. Peak of household load demand along with the customer payment costs are reported as the consequence of applying different pricings models in HLM.

  • Climate change, rapid urbanization, and population concentration have led to a higher frequency and magnitude of disasters in the world. Recently, the occurrence of large-scale complex disasters, which are caused by a combination of natural disasters, man-made disasters, and social disasters, is increasing. In Korea, there are many case studies of damage prediction and response technology development for individual natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons. On the other hand, the system basis for the efficient response and management of large-scale complex disasters is insufficient. Therefore, this study examined the representative cases of natural, social disasters, and related cases of domestic disaster response management systems. In addition, this paper proposes ways to improve the legal system for complex disaster management policies and establish a cooperation system between the ministries for an efficient response.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) empirically studies the relationship between a response variable and input variables in the product or process development phase. The ultimate goal of RSM is to find an optimal condition of the input variables that optimizes (maximizes or minimizes) the response variable. RSM can be seen as a knowledge management tool in terms of creating and utilizing data, information, and knowledge about a product production and service operations. In the field of product or process development, most real-world problems often involve a simultaneous consideration of multiple response variables. This is called a multiple response surface (MRS) problem. Various approaches have been proposed for MRS optimization, which can be classified into loss function approach, priority-based approach, desirability function approach, process capability approach, and probability-based approach. In particular, the loss function approach is divided into univariate and multivariate approaches at large. This paper focuses on the univariate approach. The univariate approach first obtains the mean square error (MSE) for individual response variables. Then, it aggregates the MSE's into a single objective function. It is common to employ the weighted sum or the Tchebycheff metric for aggregation. Finally, it finds an optimal condition of the input variables that minimizes the objective function. When aggregating, the relative weights on the MSE's should be taken into account. However, there are few studies on how to determine the weights systematically. In this study, we propose an interactive procedure to determine the weights through considering a decision maker's preference. The proposed method is illustrated by the 'colloidal gas aphrons' problem, which is a typical MRS problem. We also discuss the extension of the proposed method to the weighted MSE (WMSE).

  • In order to take advantage of the building as an energy demand resources, it requires automated systems that can respond to the demand response event. Load aggregator has been started business in Korea, research and development of building energy management and demand response systems that can support them has been active recently. However, the ratio of introducing automated real-time demand response systems is insufficient and the cost is also high. In this research, we developed a building energy management system and OpenADR protocol to participate in a demand response and then evaluated them in real building. OpenADR is a standard protocol for automated system through the event and reporting between load aggregator and demand-side. In addition, we also developed a web-based building control system to embrace different control systems and to reduce the peak load during demand response event. We verified that the result systems are working in a building and the reduced load is measured to confirm the demand response.

  • Purpose: For effective crisis communication in the event of a disaster, we present policy measures by exploring what activities are required of companies on a daily basis. Method: Employees working for L company were surveyed about the disaster response department, disaster message, and perception of the company during the company's response to COVID-19, as well as the level of response behavior of the employee. Results: First, caller characteristics did not have a significant effect on behavioral changes of members. Second, while the disaster response message within the company had no effect on the members' normative behavior, it had a positive effect on the discretionary behavior. Third, caller characteristics and disaster response messages had a positive effect on public relations, and public relations appeared to mediate caller characteristics and members' discretionary behavior. Conclusion: Studies on disaster response messages are required in the disaster control tower inside the company in normal times, and activities to build a member-friendly corporate culture for strengthening public relations are needed.
