Fast Computation of DWT and JPEG2000 using GPU (GPU를 이용한 DWT 및 JPEG2000의 고속 연산)

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method for Processing DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Since the DWT and EBCOT (embedded block coding with optimized truncation) are the most complicated submodules in JPEG2000, we design a high-performance processing framework for performing DWT using the fragment shader of GPU based on the render-to-texture (RTT) architecture. Experimental results show that the performance increases significantly, in which DWT running on modern GPU is more than 10 times faster than on modern CPU. Furthermore, by replacing the DWT part of Jasper which is the JPEG2000 reference software, the overall processing is 2$\sim$16 times faster than the original JasPer. The GPU-driven render-to-texture architecture proposed in this paper can be used in the general image and computer vision processing for high-speed processing.

  • A mobile phone is becoming no longer a voice communication tool due to smartphones and mobile internet. Also, it now becomes a total entertainment device on which we can play game and get services by variety applications through the Web. As smartphones are getting more popular, their usages are also increased, which makes the interest of advertising industry in mobile advertisement increased but it is bound to be limited by the size of the screen. In this paper, we suggest an augmented reality logo system based on Android platform to maximize the effect of logo advertisement. After developing software and mounting it on a real smartphone, its performances are analyzed in various ways. The results show the possibility of its application to real world but it's not enough to provide real time service because of the low performance of hardware.

Op-Art in Fashion of Post-Modern Society (포스트모던 사회의 패션에 표현된 옵아트)

  • OP-Art was not appreciated by painters and art critics. and according1y has been forgotten in art history. But recently Op-Art is revitalized in fashion and is in its palmy days. This study intends to re-assess the value of Op-Art, by reviewing its influence on fashion design in the post-modern society To this purpose, conceptual characteristics of Op-Art was analyzed. And then, on the bases of these characteristics, the figural characteristics and the meaning of Op-Art in fashion design of post-modern society was re-explained. Op-Art is characterized as an art of flatness of picture plane which uses repetition of simple forms and colors. It is also based on trick of visual perception. Finally. it creates an impression which is flickering or vibrating by means of optical illusion. These characteristics give birth to some features such as simplicity. anonymity and mobility in the Op-Art fashion. The meanings of Op-Art in fashion design in post-modern society are as follows. First, repetition of simple units employed in Op-Art produces feeling of simplicity. which makes the Op-Art fashion works perceived as polysemy. In other words, the feeling of simplicity can be interpreted In diverse perspectives within the social context of our society. The material civilization and technology civilization, which causes the alienation and standardization of man. can be the backgrounds of the Op-Art fashion. Second, Op-Art is an art based on perspectives of spectators. Anonymity in the Op-Art fashion enhances participation of spectators. which gives Op-Art a sense of affinity. Third, through the feeling of mobility created by optical illusion techniques. the Op-Art fashion expresses the opposition to the ideal body image made by power group. In post-modern society, Op-Art in fashion gives new meaning to art. Op-Art in fashion proposes new roles of artist and spectators, and new concepts of art related with roles of human beings. Through general sensibility of men, Op-art in fashion can express new recognition of the post-modern society.

An Application of AdaBoost Learning Algorithm and Kalman Filter to Hand Detection and Tracking (AdaBoost 학습 알고리즘과 칼만 필터를 이용한 손 영역 탐지 및 추적)

  • With the development of wearable(ubiquitous) computers, those traditional interfaces between human and computers gradually become uncomfortable to use, which directly leads to a requirement for new one. In this paper, we study on a new interface in which computers try to recognize the gesture of human through a digital camera. Because the method of recognizing hand gesture through camera is affected by the surrounding environment such as lighting and so on, the detector should be a little sensitive. Recently, Viola's detector shows a favorable result in face detection. where Adaboost learning algorithm is used with the Haar features from the integral image. We apply this method to hand area detection and carry out comparative experiments with the classic method using skin color. Experimental results show Viola's detector is more robust than the detection method using skin color in the environment that degradation may occur by surroundings like effect of lighting.

  • This research aimed at providing the direction for future improvement of broadcast subtitle design by identifying the user perception on broadcast subtitles of Terrestrial DMB. First, we contemplated on the existing research about broadcast subtitles. As a result, we found out that broadcast subtitle plays an essential role when watching a program and that the minimization of letters, clear fonts and color arrangement, rearrangement of components were identified as main factors that increase readability. However, the terrestrial DMB user evaluation on image quality, composition, color and brightness was not that positive. In addition, the evaluation on the readability of broadcast subtitle, information transmission, subtitle composition, letter font, number and size of letter was more negative. Developing a subtitle design which considers user convenience and suits terrestrial DMB screens in aspects of broadcast subtitle form and composition, limit of information, clearness and size of the letter is required.

Simulation for Small Lamellar Grating FTIR Spectrometer for Passive Remote Sensing

  • A miniaturized FTIR spectrometer based on lamellar grating interferometry is being developed for passive remote-sensing. Consisting of a pair of micro-mirror arrays, the lamellar grating can be fabricated using MEMS technology. This paper describes a method to compute the optical field in the interferometer to optimize the design parameters of the lamellar grating FTIR spectrometer. The lower limit of the micro-mirror width in the grating is related to the formation of a Talbot image in the near field and is estimated to be about $100{\mu}m$ for the spectrometer to be used for the wavelength range of $7-14{\mu}m$. In calculating the far field at the detection window, the conventional Fraunhofer equation is inadequate for detection distance of our application, misleading the upper limit of the micro-mirror width to avoid interference from higher order diffractions. Instead, the far field is described by the unperturbed plane-wave combined with the boundary diffraction wave. As a result, the interference from the higher order diffractions turns out to be negligible as the micro-mirror width increases. Therefore, the upper limit of the micro-mirror width does not need to be set. Under this scheme, the interferometer patterns and their FT spectra are successfully generated.

An analysis of year-to-year change of degraded forest land in Mongolia nature reserve Mt. Bogdkhan in Ulaanbaatar (몽골 울란바토르 복드한산 자연보호지역의 산림훼손지 경년변화 분석)

  • Focused on Mt. Bogdkhan nature reserve in Mongolia, this study was conducted as a fundamental research to discover a tendency and characteristics of forest damage and to draw up measures for proper plans of forest restoration through an analysis of year-to year change using satellite images. In specific, land cover mapping was conducted by using Landsat images from 1994 to 2011, and then year-to year change was analyzed to investigate the features of forest damage in Mt. Bogdkhan. The results showed that the whole area of a reservation in Mongolia in 2011 was about $416.89km^2$; among them, forest area was $167,87km^2$, accounting for about 40.3%, followed by bare patch and grassland area (58.6%) and urban dry area (1.1%). In particular, compared in 1994, the area of forest in 2011 has increased by $6.12km^2$; while bare patch and grassland area has decreased by $10.81km^2$. Primary causes of forest degradation occurred in Mt. Bogdkhan nature reserve included illegal logging for fuel, forest and grassland degradation caused by domestic animals grazing, man-made forest fire, and disaster caused by insect pest.

Finite element modeling technique for predicting mechanical behaviors on mandible bone during mastication

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to propose finite element (FE) modeling methods for predicting stress distributions on teeth and mandible under chewing action. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For FE model generation, CT images of skull were translated into 3D FE models, and static analysis was performed considering linear material behaviors and nonlinear geometrical effect. To find out proper boundary and loading conditions, parametric studies were performed with various areas and directions of restraints and loading. The loading directions are prescribed to be same as direction of masseter muscle, which was referred from anatomy chart and CT image. From the analysis, strain and stress distributions of teeth and mandible were obtained and compared with experimental data for model validation. RESULTS. As a result of FE analysis, the optimized boundary condition was chosen such that 8 teeth were fixed in all directions and condyloid process was fixed in all directions except for forward and backward directions. Also, fixing a part of mandible in a lateral direction, where medial pterygoid muscle was attached, gave the more proper analytical results. Loading was prescribed in a same direction as masseter muscle. The tendency of strain distributions between the teeth predicted from the proposed model were compared with experimental results and showed good agreements. CONCLUSION. This study proposes cost efficient FE modeling method for predicting stress distributions on teeth and mandible under chewing action. The proposed modeling method is validated with experimental data and can further be used to evaluate structural safety of dental prosthesis.

An Analysis of the Fashion Trends Expressed on the Korean Men´s Golfwears (우리나라 남성 골프웨어에 나타난 패션 경향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the fashion trends of Korean men's golfwears and furnished the researchers of same major with reliable data base. Lately, Korean men were concerned about their appearance rather than social position. Moreover, they tried to express the needs of youthfulness with free lift through clothings. These trend had been showed itself not only development of golfwears, but also change of esthetic tastes of men's golfwears. First of all, the development of men's golfwears was affected by the major three factors out of many various factors. That is, popularization of golf by the international activities of Korean progolfers, appearance of young consumers after IMF and the casualization of the men's formal dress, the making an everyday dress of men's sportswears. The results of analyzing of fashion trends of the men's golfwears is as follow: 1. The characteristics with naturalness, comfort of men's golfwears was manifested casualization trends by the factors of downward tendency of golfer's age, 5-days working, men's biz casual preference, individual ism after IMF. 2. Men's character golfwears was showed by the ageless as a youthfulness expression, the Sportism as an international trend, 2002 world cup, etc. 3. All of golfwears have to be functional characteristics because the golf is an active sports spending long time in golf course. Unconstruction style was an important fashion trends of men's golfwears by using functional materials to meet the needs of consumers. 4. The men's clothing was deviated from a fixed idea called masculine after IMF. Moreover, this trend was increased by the appearance of lovely man, genderlessness and had an effect on men's golfwears. Consequently. men's golfwears was showed feminization characteristics as a feminine, sensitive style. In the future, Korean men will try to express their character and thought freely through golfwears, men's golfwears will be continued ‘beyond the golf course’ image reflecting in the future fashion trends.

Spatial analysis of Shoreline change in Northwest coast of Taean Peninsula

  • The coastline influenced naturally and artificially changes dynamically. While the long-term change is influenced by the rise in the surface of the sea and the changes in water level of the rivers, the short-term change is influenced by the tide, earthquake and storm. Also, man-made thoughtless development such as construction of embankment and reclaimed land not considering erosion and deformation of coast has been causes for breaking functions of coast and damages on natural environment. In order to manage coastal environment and resources effectively, In this study is intended to analyze and predict erosion in coastal environment and changes in sedimentation quantitatively by detecting changes in coastal line from data collection for satellite images and aerial LiDAR data. The coastal line in 2007 and 2012 was extracted by manufacturing Digital Surface Model (DSM) with Aviation LiDAR materials. For the coastal line in 2009 and 2010, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method was used to extract the KOMPSAT-2 image selected after considering tide level and wave height. The change rate of the coastal line is varied in line with the forms of the observation target but most of topography shows a tendency of being eroded as time goes by. Compared to the relatively monotonous beach of Taean, the gravel and rock has very complex form. Therefore, there are more errors in extraction of coastlines and the combination of transect and shoreline, which affect overall changes. Thus, we think the correction of the anomalies caused by these properties is required in the future research.
