According with variations in principal agronomic traits of fourteen malting barley cultivars as affected by different seeding methods and seeding rates. the analysis and interpretation of correlation coefficients and path coefficients was intended. From all treatments (seeding methods and rates), the positive significant relations detected between flowering days and maturing days, however the negative between maturing days and culm length, number of grains per spike, yields, and between 1000 grain weight and one liter weight, respectively. Direct effects on the yields were greatest by number of grains per spike in case of narrow-spaced row seeding and number of spikes per m$^2$ and number of grains per spike among others in broadcast seeding method On the other hand, indirect effects were not recognized in any treatments.
Finding the variations of principal agronomic traits, fourteen malting barley cultivars were tested with both narrow-spaced row seeding and broadcasting on high ridge respectively. The seeding rates were varied as 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 liter per 10a in the narrow-spaced row seeding and 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 litre in the broad casting on his ridge respectively. As a result of the test, there were highly significant differences in variation pattern of assessed traits among cultivars. However, the additional seeding rates in both seeding methods caused the drifts of earlier heading and maturity, longer in culm length, linear increase in number of spike and yields per unit area, slight reduction in 1000 grain weight, and slight increase in one litre weight, but no changes in number of grain per spike.
This study was carried out to attain the selection information on grain characters of malting barley. Indirect selection, making use of information on grain thickness, seemed to be an effective method for the selection of 1, 000 grain weight, grain hull and grain yield which were directly affected by grain thickness. Grain yield which had a direct effect on grain, meal and protein content seemed to be an effective selection indicator for them, however, a better method is expected upon improvement of indirect effects of hull and grain yield.

A stable method for strain distinction using viral RNA 1 structures analyses was developed and compared with the combined RT-PCR and RAPD methods. Seven out of 61 random primers were found to be polymorphic based on RAPD analysis resulting on the differentiation of the 33 BaYMV isolates into four distinct groups according to geographical districts. The first and largest group includes 13 isolate and consists mainly of two-rowed malting barley in Haenam area. The second group had ten collections from inland in west southern. The third group had seven isolates from west southern coastal region, where mainly six-rowed naked barley is cultivated. The last fourth group included three isolates from Gyungnam region in east southern area. Conclusively, RNA 1 analysis proved to be stable and efficient method for strain distinction for Korean BaYMV isolates. Further, results of pathogenicity and RNA 1 structure analyses revealed four groups BaYMV strains and were distributed all over Korea, represented by Naju, Haenam-okcheon, Iksan and Milyang.
Ten cultivars of malting barley grown at four locations were malted and assayed for six enzymes involved in the degradation of nucleic acids. Among these enzymes were deoxyrinonuclease, ribonuclease, phosphodiesterase, 3'- and 5'- nucleotidases and phosphomonesterase. Activities of all enzymes in five-day malts were significantly affected by variety and location of growth. The average levels of ribonuclease, deoxyribonuclease, 3'-nucleotidase and 5'-nucleotidase of 80 five-day malts were 11.2, 5.7, 5.6 and 1.2 units per gram of malt, respectively. Six-rowed barley malts contained higher levels of deoxyribonuclease, phosphodiesterase and 3'-nucleotidase than those of two-rowed barley malts, while two-rowed barley malts contained significantly higher ribonuclease levels than those of six-rowed barley malts.
Neutral lipids of the total lipid extracted from 4 representative varieties of barley grown in Korea and their corresponding malt were studied. Total lipids of barley and malt were solvent extracted with chloroform:methanol:water (1.0 : 1.0 : 0.9, v/v), The total lipids were fractionated into neutral and polar lipids by silicic acid column chromatography, and neutral lipids fraction was separated by thin layer chromatography and quantitated by TLC scanner. The fatty acid compositions was determined by gas liquid chromatography. The average content of total lipid in the 4 barleys and their malts were 3.3 and 2.9%, and average of neutral lipids content in the barley and malt lipids were 73.8 and 68.5%, respectively. Among the neutral lipids, triglycerides and free fatty acids were the major components, and triglycerides content decreased and free fatty acids content increased during malting. Sterol esters, free sterols, 1,3-and 1,2-diglycerides were the minor components of the neutral lipids, and contents of those components showed increasing tendency during malting. The major fatty acid composition of the total lipids were linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids, and in general, the malts had lower amounts of unsautrated fatty acids and high amounts of saturated fatty acids. Fatty acid composition of neutral lipids was of almost the same pattern as that of the total lipids.
Taiwan land race, Taichung 2 rowed barley #1 was crossed with England cultivar, Deba abed in 1972, and two isogenic lines-lax and compact heads-were made in 1982. So as to three fertilizer and three seeding density levels were treated at Dan-Kook Agricultural College farm located in Cheonan in 1984-1985. Lax head type had longer spike length and rachis than compact type. The traits uninfluenced by different head types were heading time, number of grains per spike, yield and soluble nitrogen content. However, the traits related to malting quality such as 1,000 grain weight, assortment ratio, protein content of grain and malt, malt extract, malt total nitrogen content, Kolbach index and diastatic power were significantly affected by head types. The number of spikes per m2, yield, assortment ratio, crude protein content of grain and malt yield ratio, extract yield ratio, malt total nitrogen, souble nitrogen content, Kolbach index and diastatic power were affected by fertilizer and seeding density levels in both isogenic lines. The malting quality was best at 12-12-9 kg/l0a fertilizer level and the yield was greatest at 15-12-9 kg/l0a level. Narrow-spaced or drilling seeding had greater yield and better malting quality than conventional row seeding. The plant with lax head type had some advantages in malting quality, suggesting that this trait would be considered as an selection criterion fer good malting quality lines.

This study was conducted to develop a easy seedling method to test large amounts of barley and wheat cultivars for resistance of powdery mildew. In addition, we also examined the resistance of genetic resources that have been used in barley and wheat breeding programs in Korea. This seedling test used paper bag with seeds can be completed within three weeks. to-day seedlings were available to inoculation and 8 days was needed for result reading. This method can test at least 180 collections at one time. we can identify the two resistant types by leave symptoms showed non infection and necrotic spots. Among the 79 Korean barley cultivars, only two cultivar, 'Sangrokbori' and 'Dajinbori' were resistant and 'Jejubori' showed moderate resistant. There was no resistant in hulless barley and wheat cultivars. It was same results in comparison of earlier resistant reports in field test. We confirm that this method could using in test of powdery mildew resistance in barley and wheat. Among the 1,401 genetic resources using in Korean breeding program, malting barley has more resistant collections comparing to 796 hulled and hulless barley and 273 wheat germplasms.

Viral diseases, especially Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) have been most serious in barley fields. In this study, we investigated the effect of different level of resistance to viral diseases on the plant growth and yield in malting barley. In diagnosis of virus infection, BaYMV and BaMMV were detected in 'Doosan 29' (susceptible), however, 'Jinyangbori' (moderate susceptible) and 'Hopumbori' (moderate) was infected by only BaYMV. Plant height was restrained about 8~29% in overwintered plant regeneration stage depending on the resistant of each cultivar. The culm length damaged also to 9~12% by BaYMV infection. The tiller numbers reduced to 10~14% in overwintering season, however, the head numbers in harvest season more decreased to 26~33%. Heading date was delayed to 3~3 days by the infection. In examination of yield components, 1,000 kernel weight and $\ell$ weight reduced according to culrivar's resistant degrees to 4.0~6.4% and 1.0~4.2%, respectively. The yield of abortive grain was doubled in BaYMV infection comparing to non-infested field. Three varieties tested in the non-infected field over two years were not significantly different for yield potential with ranges of 509kg~632kg/10a. However, significant yield reduction was observed in 'Saessalbori' and 'Baegdong' with ranges of 77~177kg/10a as compared to 'Hopumbori' (467 kg/10a) when tested in the virus-infected field. Yield potentials of these cultivars reduced by 26~43%, respectively, in the virus-infected field as compared to those in the non-infected field.

This study was conducted for 2 years at Chinju region to establish suitable seeding rate and fertilizing levels of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in spring-sown Jinyangbori. Heading and maturing were delayed by increasing fertilizers, especially nitrogen. Number of spikes per were secured by much seeding and increased application of nitrogen. One thousand grain weight reduced with increasing fertilization at any seeding rate. Relatively high harvest indices were observed with 12-10-4 at 10kg. 10a$^{-l}$ seeds planted, followed by 6-10-8 at 15 kgㆍ 10a$^{-1}$, and 6-10-4kgㆍ 10a$^{-l}$ at 20kg ㆍ 10a$^{-l}$ of N-P-K fertilizing combinations, respectively. There was no distinct differences on yield for various seeding rates in spring-sown barley. When seeding rate increased up to 15kgㆍ10a$^{-1}$, the positive effect of fertilizers was recognized as the function of balanced-application. It was possible to recommend 10kgㆍ10a$^{-1}$ as seeding rate and 6-5-4(N-P-K)kgㆍ10a$^{-1}$ as fertilizing combination in spring-time seeding considering low input and sustainable agriculture. There was no significant difference of protein content in grain by seeding rate. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer enhanced protein content in grain.
