This investigation was designed to compare the craniofacial morphology of Class III malocclusions with that of normal occlusions using PM line. The subjects consisted of forty-four normal occlusions (twenty-three males and twenty-one females) and sixty-nine Class III malocclusions (thirty males and thirty-nine females), aged eight through ten. Using the tracings of the standard lateral cephalograms, various angles, linear measurements and linear ratios of counter-part were recorded and analyzed by t-test. The following characteristics of craniofacial morphology of Class III malocclusion were obtained by this study. 1. Maxillary anteroposterior position was balanced with Nasion but was not balanced with mandible because maxillary bony arch was small and positioned posteriorly and mandibular corpus was large and positioned relatively anteriorly. 2. Upper and lover alveolar bony arch were not balanced each other in its size. 3. In counterpart analysis, Class III malocclusion was more horizontally unbalanced than normal occlusion. 4. Class III malocclusion was divided into 11 groups by maxillary and mandibular bony arch position, size and alveolar bony arch size. Unbalanced bony size of the maxilla and mandible was a major characteristics of Class III malocclusion.
To study the sexual maturity at puberty and interrelation between pubertal growth peak and sexual maturity, 68 malocclusions (female 44, male 24) were longitudinally studied for 4 years and cross-sectional samples of 210 malocclusions were studied together. The pubertal growth peak was determined by stature increment and sexual maturity was studied using developmental stages of pubic hair and breast, menarche in female and those of pubic hair in male. The following results were obtained. 1. Mean age at menarche was 12.8 years and it was 11.8 months later than PHV. 2. At pubertal growth peak, developmental stage 2 (54.2%) and 3 (29.2%) of pubic hair were most in male, and stage 1 (72.7%) and 2 (20.5%) were most in female. 3. At pubertal growth peak, the developmental stage 2 (50%) of breast was most and the stage 3 (43.2%) was next. 4. In interrelation between skeletal growth and sexual maturity, PHV had most high correlation with menarche and stage 3 of breast, and menarche had most high correlation with stage 3 of breast. 5. Appearance of remarkable sexual maturity suggested that the PHV was passed already.
The quadrilateral analysis is a proportional analysis which evaluates the skeletal configuration of lower face on the relations between both jaws in the horizontal as we]1 as vortical dimensions. This study was undertaken to analyse the harmony and disharmony of quadrilateral patterns in normal occlusion and malocclusion. The present study was carried out on lateral cephalograms of 530 Korean children; the subjects consisted of 135 normal occlusions (63 male and 72 female), 105 Class II division 1 malocclusions (52 male and 53 female), 109 Class III malocclusions (50 male and 59 female), 91 hypodivergent facial types (44 male and 47 female) and 90 hyperdivergent facial types (45 male and 45 female). The following conclusions were reached: 1. Means and standard deviation in each group and sex were obtained from normal occlusion and malocclusion. 2. Quadrilateral mean diagram in normal occlusion was constructed for male and female, respectively. 3. In normal occlusion, 1:1 ratio exists between the maxillary base length (A' to Ptm') and mandibular base length (B' to J'), but lower facial height is targer than above. 4. Difference is effective to estimate the degrees of Class II and Class III malocclusion, and lower facial height (LFH) and sagittal angle is effective to recognize the hypodivergent and hyperdivergent facial type. 5. Quadrilateral analysis is able to visualize the anteroposterior and vertical dysplasia of lower face, and it is helpful to recognize certain problems in malocclusion.
There has been so much controversies about the position of upper and lower jaws, and their first permanent molars in normal occlusion and Angle's class $I{\cdot}II{\cdot}III$ malocclusions. So, the purpose of this study is to compare the position of upper and lower jaws, and their first molars in normal occlusion and Angle's class $I{\cdot}II{\cdot}III$ malocclusions by lateral cephalometric analysis. The sample consisted of one hundred and twenty girls(thirty in each group) who had completed growth. The findings of this study were as follows : 1. In class I malocclusion, both maxilla and mandible were slightly posterior position than normal occlusion, but they showed harmonious relationship. 2. In class II malocclusion, the mandible was greatly retruded, and the maxilla was also slightly retruded to the cranial base as compared with normal occlusion. 3. In class III malocclusion, the maxilla was significantly retruded to the cranial base, but no significant difference was found in mandibular position as compared with normal occlusion. 4. The maxillary first molar was located at posterior position in class II malocclusion, and anterior position in class III malocclusion to the cranium, so that the rotation of mandible was influenced by that. 5. The mandibular first molar showed constant relationship to the mandible in all four groups, but different position to the cranial base in direct proportion to the mandibular position. 6. On the treatment planning of class III malocclusion, it seems to be better to promote the mandibular horizontal growth by inhibiting the vertical growth of maxillary molar area, and on the treatment planning of class III malocclusion, it seems to be better to promote the antero-inferior growth of maxilla mi to promote the mandibular vertical growth by inducing the vertical growth of maxillary molar area.
Most commonly used axis for central incisors in lateral cephalometric radiographs is the line connecting root apex and incisor edge. However, crown axis and root axis do not always coincide in cases of malocclusion patients. The angle created by these axis are called the collum angle, which should be considered in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. In this study, 31 Class I malocclusion, 30 Class II division 1 malocclusion, 31 Class II division 2 malocclusion, and 31 Class m malocclusion patients were selected and their collum angles were measured. Correlation between these angles and malocclusions was investigated, and the correlation analysis with other parameters in cephalometrics was done. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean collum angles according to the types of malocclusions are ; $3.11^{\circ}{\pm}3.54^{\circ}$ for Class I, $1.23^{\circ}{\pm}2.41^{\circ}$ for Class II division 1, $3.77^{\circ}{\pm}4.39^{\circ}$ for Class II division 2, and $3.90^{\circ}{\pm}4.08^{\circ}$ for Class III malocclusion. 2. Statistically significant differences in collum angles were noted between Class II division 1 group and Class II division 2 and Class III group. 3. Significant correlations were found between collum angles and other parameters used in cephalometrics, namely IMPA for Class I, Wits for Class II division 1, Overbite for Class II division 2 and for ClassIII.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the post-retention stability of the lower incisor axis in Class II division 2 malocclusions. The dental casts and lateral cephalograms from before (T1) and after (T2) orthodontic treatment and long-term post-retention (T3) in 62 Class II division 2 malocclusion cases were included in this study. After several linear and angular measurements at each time were taken, the significance in the amount of change of the lower incisor axis for each gender and extraction versus non-extraction was evaluated. The results showed that the lower incisors that inclined labially during treatment were unstable and relapsed to the original lingual position in Class II division 2 malocclusions (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between extraction and non-extraction groups for the amount of lingual relapse of the lower incisors (p>0.05). There was no significant difference between male and female groups for the axial change of the lower incisors (p>0.05). As a result of multiple regression analysis, the cephalometric measurement best predicting the lower incisor position to the A-Pog line post-retention was pre-treatment L1-Apog(mm) and pre-treatment SNGoMe$(^{\circ})$. Because of the instability of labially inclined lower incisors after orthodontic treatment, the treatment goal should be the pre-treatment incisor axial position.
Objective: A recent study suggested that rs6504340, a polymorphism within the homeobox B (HOXB) gene cluster, is associated with the susceptibility for malocclusions in Europeans. The resulting malocclusions require orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of rs6504340 and other dentition-implicated polymorphisms with dental and occlusal traits in Korean and Japanese populations. Methods: The study participants included 223 unrelated Koreans from the Busan area and 256 unrelated Japanese individuals from the Tokyo metropolitan area. DNA samples were extracted from saliva specimens. Genotyping for rs6504340 and four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been shown to be associated with the timing of first tooth eruption and the number of teeth at 1 year of age (rs10506525, rs1956529, rs9674544, and rs8079702) was performed using TaqMan assays. The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), overjet, overbite, arch length discrepancy, crown sizes, and length and width of the dental arches were measured. Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate relationships between rs6504340 and these dental/occlusal traits. Results: We evaluated the aesthetic components and dental health components of the IOTN in the Korean and Japanese populations and found that neither rs6504340 nor the other four SNPs showed any association with dental and occlusal traits in these East Asian populations. Conclusions: These negative results suggest that further research is needed to identify the genetic determinants of malocclusions in order to reach a consensus.

The purpose of this study was to compare the palatal dimensions (volume, width, length, and height) in different malocclusions (Class I, II, and III) in mixed dentition using a three-dimensional digital scanner. The study was performed on 30 selected casts from 1400 casts that were taken at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Dankook University. Casts consisted of Class I, II, and III malocclusion groups in Hellman's dental age IIIA. The mean age was 8 years and 6 months ± 11 months. Each cast was scanned by three-dimensional digital scanner, Medit T710 (Medit, Seoul, Korea), and shaped into the three-dimensional image and calculated palatal dimensions using the Plan T program (SMD solution, Seoul, Korea). The values were statistically compared and evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Mann-Whitney test. According to our results, subjects with Class II malocclusion showed lower palatal width and longer palatal length compared to those with Class I and Class III. For palatal height, Class III malocclusion subjects in mixed dentition exhibited a larger number than Class II and Class I. Lastly, for palatal volume, compared to other malocclusions, Class III showed higher results; however, there were no significant differences. The form of the palate differs in types of malocclusions and understanding of these differences is important in clinical significance. Based on this study, the understanding of the relationship between the shape of the palate and the skeletal pattern provides useful information about orthodontic treatment plans, early diagnosis of malocclusion, and morphological integration mechanisms. Orthopedic treatment in the maxilla should be performed during early and intermediate mixed dentition to enhance treatment efficiency.
The present paper describes 3 clinical cases in which the orthodontic treatment was effected by the Bioprogressive therapy following the extraction of the upper and lower first premolars. What is most noteworthy in the present treatment is the use of a systems approach to diagnosis and treatment by the application of the visual treatment objective in planning treatment, evaluating anchorage and monitoring results, and the rest being performed routinely by the Bioprogressive mechanism. The result achieved by this method is very favorable and the efficiency of the Bioprogressive therapy is quite satisfactory.

The importance of the hyoid bone lies in its unique anatomic relationships. It has no bony articulations but provides attachment for muscles, ligaments, and fascia of the pharynx, mandible, and cranium. Various studies have documented a variability of hyoid bone position in relation to changed mandibular position or head posture. The aim of this study is to investigate the hyoid bone position and inclination on cephalometric radiographs of three groups of patients exhibiting Class I, II, and III malocclusions. The conclusions obtained from this study can be summarized as follows ; 1. Class III malocclusion patients show a more anterior position of the hyoid bone and also less steep inclination of the hyoid bone. 2. The anteroposterior position of the hyoid bone relative to the cervical vertebra and mandible was very constant. 3. The hyoid bone represented the anterior bony boundary of the pharynx at a lower level than PNS.
