  • Mallotus nepalensis (Euphorbiaceae) is a small tree found in central and eastern Himalayas, Nepal, Wallich and Sikkim. The 90% ethanolic extract of Mallotus nepalensis exhibited mild CNS depressant activity. Four compounds, lupeol (1), ${\beta}-sitosterol$ (2), ursolic acid (3) and ${\beta}-sitosterol-\;{\beta}-D-glucoside$ (4) were isolated from the 90% ethanolic extract of this plant of which 1, 3 and 4 are being reported for the first time from this species.

예덕나무 피 추출물의 노화 방지 효과에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Anti-aging Effects of Mallotus japonicus Bark Extracts)

  • 노화는 크게 내인성 노화와 광노화로 분류된다. 내인성 노화는 시간이 지남에 따라 진행되는 자연적인 노화이며, 광노화는 자외선에 우리 몸이 노출되면서 발생되는 노화 현상으로 주로 피부에서 잘 나타난다. 대표적인 노화 기작으로는 체내 활성 산소의 증가로 인한 생체 구성 성분의 퇴화를 들 수 있다. 따라서, 효과적인 노화 방지를 위해서는 활성 산소를 억제할 수 있는 항산화제를 지속적으로 공급해 주어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 천연 식물 성분인 예덕나무 피 추출물이 노화 방지에 매우 우수한 효과가 있다는 실험 결과들을 보여준다. 먼저, 예덕나무 피 추출물(Mallotus japonicus bark extracts)은 hydroxy radical scavenging activity와 SOD like activity를 가지고 있으며 과산화 수소에 의해 발생하는 피부 손상을 억제하는 효과가 매우 뛰어나다. 또한 광노화 방지 효과도 매우 뛰어나 자외선 조사에 의해 발생할 수 있는 피부 세포 손상을 억제하여 주며 자외선에 의한 유전자 변이도 억제해 주는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로, 예덕나무 피 추출물은 피부에서 일어날 수 있는 노화 현상을 억제하는데 매우 뛰어난 효과를 가진 물질로서 화장품 원료로서의 이용 가능성이 매우 높다.

예덕나무로부터 Listeria monocytogenes 에 대한 항균 활성 물질의 분리 및 구조동정 (Isolation and Identification of Antimicrobial Active Substance from Mallotus japonicus Muell on Listeria monocytogenes)

  • 항균 활성이 우수한 예덕나무의 75% 에탄올 추출물을 용매 분획 후 일정 수준의 농도로 액체 배지(tryptic soy broth)에 첨가하여 L. monocytogenes 5 균주를 배양시킨 결과 헥산분획물 20 ppm에서 72시간 동안 증식 저해 효과를 나타내었다. 항균 활성이 우수한 예덕나무 헥산 분획물을 silica gel column chromatography로 1회 분획하여 항균 활성이 우수한 획분 M34를 얻었으며 M34 획분은 50 ppm 수준의 농도에서 실험 균주 모두 증식을 저해했다. 획분 M34를 2회 연속 분리하여 소 획분 M34-4-4를 얻은 후 액체 배지에 첨가하여 L. monocytogenes 2 균주를 접종한 후 72시간 배양한 결과 50 ppm 수준의 농도에서 증식 저해 효과가 나타났으며, M34-4-4을 구조 동정한 결과 linolenic acid로 확인되었다.

바다빙어과 2종 (Hypomesus nipponensis와 Mallotus villosus)의 변이 (Variability in Two Species of Osmeridae (Hypomesus nipponensis and Mallotus villosus))

  • The variability within and between Korean pond-smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis; KPS) and Canadian capelin (Mallotus villosus; CCP) were studied in order to clarify the genetic distances and differences. The dendrogram obtained by the seven primers indicates cluster 1 (KOREAN 01$\sim$KOREAN 11) and cluster 2 (CANADIAN 12$\sim$CANADIAN 22). The longest genetic distance displaying significant molecular differences was found to exist between individuals in the two geographic species of Osmeridae, between individuals' no. 10 of Korean and no. 18 of Canadian (0.686). 121 unique shared loci to each species, with an average of 17.3 per primer, were observed in the KPS species, and 264 loci, with an average of 37.7 per primer, were observed in the CCP species. 77 shared loci by the two species, with an average of 11.0 per primer, were observed in the two fish species. RAPD analysis showed that the KPS species was more genetically diverse than the CCP species. KPS species may have high levels of genomic DNA variability owing to the introduction of the wild individuals from the other sites to sampling sites although it may be the geographically diverse distribution of this species. As stated above, the existence of species discrimination and genetic variability between the KPS and the CCP species was identified by RAPD analysis.

Pentacyclic Triterpenoids from Mallotus apelta

  • A new triterpene (1) and six known pentacyclic terpenoids (2-7) were isolated from the methanol extract of the dried leaves from Mallotus apelta. Based on the spectral and chemical evidence, their structures were determined to be 3$\alpha$-hydroxyhop-22(29)-ene (1), hennadiol (2), friedelin (3), friedelanol (4), epifriedelanol (5), taraxerone (6), and epitaraxerol (7).

  • Two popular ethnomedicines of the Onge, a Negrito tribe of Andaman Islands, were evaluated for analgesic and antiinflammatory activity. The methanol extract as well as the different fractions of methanol extract of both Alstonia macrophylla and Mallotus peltatus leaves were studied using Swiss albino mice and Wistar albino rats. Acetic acid induced writhing, Tail flick and Tail immersion; Carrageenin- and Dextran-induced paw oedema tests were used. Dose-dependent analgesic and antiinflammatory activity were demonstrated for both methanol leaf extracts as well as fractions. Results were highly comparable with that of the standard drug pethidine.

  • This paper describes efficient synthetic approaches for isolating biologically interesting natural pyranochalcones and their unnatural derivatives from Mallotus Philippensis. The key strategies involve ethylenediamine diacetate-catalyzed benzopyran formation reactions and base-catalyzed aldol reactions.

New Cytotoxic Benzopyrans from the Leaves of Mallotus apelta

  • Two new benzopyrans 6-[1'-oxo-3'(R)-hydroxy-butyl]-5,7 -dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-ben-zopyran (1) and 6-[1'-oxo-3'(R)-methoxy-butyl]-5,7 -dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran (2) were isolated from the leaves of Mallotus apelta Muell.-Arg., (Euphorbiaceae). Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, especially by 1D-, 2D-NMR and MS spectra. Compound 1 was found to have strong cytotoxic effect against two human cancer cell lines as human hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep-2, $IC_{50}\;:\;0.49\;{\mu}g/mL$) and rhabdosarcoma (RD, $IC_{50}\;:\;0.54\;{\mu}g/mL$), while compound 2 showed moderate activity against Hep-2 cell line ($IC_{50}\;:\;4.22\;{\mu}g/mL$) by in vitro assay.

Standardization and Quality Evaluation of Kampilla

  • Kampilla is an important herbal drug of indigenous system of medicine. Fruit dust of Mallotus philippensis Muell-Arg constitutes the genuine drug Kampilla. However, due to limited distribution of this plant and its high medicinal value, the drug is heavily adulterated with the cheaper substances. Hence the present study was undertaken to evaluate both the authentic and market samples. The drug consists of resin glands and trichomes. Resin glands are lined by a delicate yellowish thin membrane and bear a pore at the tip. Quantitative standards of the drug powder showed 82.50% yield in total ash while alcohol soluble extract of market and authentic sample exhibit 0.97% and 3.458% respectively. The main adulterant noticed in the market sample is brick powder. Simple methods are suggested to identify the genuine drug.

칠산도의 관속식물상 (Vascular Plants of Chilsan Islet)

  • 칠산도에서 확인된 관속식물은 37과 74속 71종 13변종으로 총 84종류였다. 꾸지뽕나무나 예덕나무가 출현하는 것으로 보아 남부아구에 속한다고 볼 수 있다 제1도는 밀사초와 사철쑥, 제2도는 밀사초, 제3도는 밀사초와 예덕나무, 제4도는 누리장나무 그리고 제6도는 참억새와 띠가 우점하였다.
