  • In this study, styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) was synthesized from styrene and maleic anhydride and further reacted with sulfuric acid to obtain water-soluble SMA and the flow and strength tests of cement mortar mixed with copolymers were carried out to evaluate the capability of copolymers as high range water reducer for the concrete. It was found from flow experiment that the fluidity of cement mortar mixed with sulfonated SMA (SSMA) was larger than that miced with aminophenol-substituted SSMA (SmSMA). The decreasing rate of the flow of cement mortar mixed with SSMA and SmSMA was decreasing rate of the flow of cement mortar mixed with SSMA and SmSMA was significantly lower than that mixed with naphthalene condensate (NSC). The compressive strength of the hardened cement mortars containing 0.5% copolymers after 28 days curing was examined. The compressive strength of hardened cement mortar containing SSMA and SmSMA was increased up to 32% and 13%, respectively, when compared to the plain. As the results, the copolymers (SSMA and SmSMA) used in this study are greatly expected as a good high range water reducers for the concrete.

  • The surface energies and acid-base interaction between the untreated and treated Jute or Hemp fibers and different matrix compositions of polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymers (PP-MAPP) were investigated using dynamic contact angle measurement. The contribution of the acid-base property into the interfacial adhesion of the natural fibers/matrix systems were characterized by calculating the work adhesion coming from the acid-base interaction. On the other hand, microfailure mechanism of both single Jute and Hemp fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and acoustic emission. Distinctly different micro failure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems wet ε observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.

  • A series of blends containing ethylene-vinyl alcohol(EVOH) and styrene-maleic anhydride(SMA) copolymers has been produced to study the effect of compatibilization on the crystallization behavior of the dispersed semicrystalline component. The crystallization behavior and the morphology of the blends have been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM), respectively. Depending on the compatibilization, a part of crystallization of the dispersed phase took place with greater undercooking. Homogeneous crystallization was responsible for the shift of crystallization temperature for those compatibilized blends.

  • A catalyst for promoting the commercialization of N-phenylamleimide (PMI), a compound used to strengthen the heat resistance of ABS resins and also completely imported, was developed. N-phenylmaleamic acid (PMA) was first quantitatively obtained through the reaction of maleic anhydride and aniline. A catalyst was then investigated for obtaining PMI. Zinc acetate/$Et_3N$, composite catalyst, showed better performance than a single acid catalyst. By using the developed composite catalyst, PMI could be synthesized with the yield and purity of 90% and 99.3%, respectively without any further purification processes.

  • Alloys of nylon(PA6) and ethylene-propylene-diene polymer, modified with maleic anhydride(MEPDM) were prepared using a melt kneading process. This study focuses on the effects of the content of MEPDM in PA6 blend on the mechanical and thermal properties of such blends where MEPDM is the dispersed phase. Mechanical properties were examined by stress-strain measurements and impact strength test. Both impact strength of PA6/MEPDM at room temperature and at $-20^{\circ}C$ were improved up to 400-550% with the amounts of MEPDM. However, PA6/MEPDM containing 3-5 wt% of MEPDM showed the about $700kg_f/m^2$ of the maximum tensile strength but 8.5 % of the lowest elongation. For certain compositions of PA6 with rubbery MEPDM, the interesting reduction of elongation is caused by the reaction of the polyamide amine end groups with maleic anhydride portion in MEPDM, that provided a reinforcement in the PA6 matrix. In addition, the introduction of antistatic agent on the surface of alloys causes significant reduction of their surface electrostatic resistance.

  • In this study, the PPS/ABS blend system was investigated in order to identify the relationship between the incorporation of compatabilizing moieties and the mechanical properties. ABS resin was chemically modified by the incorporation of maleic anhydride using reactive extrusion method to yield MABS resin, and PPS/MABS blend was prepared by a twin screw extruder. Single glass transition behavior was observed in the various compositions of PPS/MABS blend by dynamic mechanical analysis study. Upon the examination of the mechanical properties, the PPS/MABS blend exhibited an enhanced tensile, flexural and impact strength, which might be due to the better chemical compatibilization to result in the reduced interfacial tension between each components.

  • Starch was grafted with maleic anhydride by melt process and then the grafted starch was blended with poly(lactic acid). The thermal properties of the poly(lactic acid), poly(lactic acid)/starch, and poly(lactic acid)/ modified starch were observed by DSC and TGA analysis. In the case of poly(lactic acid)/modified starch, an additional melting peak at 1$65^{\circ}C$ accompanying with 172$^{\circ}C$ assigned to pure poly(lactic acid) melting transition was clearly displayed in DSC analysis. Also, smooth decomposition pattern between starch and poly(lactic acid) was also monitored in poly(lactic acid)/modified starch blend by TGA analysis. The modulus of poly(lactic acid)/modified starch was 12% higher than that of poly(lactic acid)/starch. The thermal and mechanical characteristics of poly(lactic acid)/modified starch might be due to the enhanced compatibilization between each components, which was also observed in SEM analysis.

  • This article aims to enhance the biodegradability and environment-friendliness of petroleum based biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-succinate-co-terephthalate)(PBAST) by blending chemically modified thermoplastic starch(CMPS). CMPS is a kind of bio-based biodegradable resin which is manufactured by reacting starch with maleic anhydride(MA) in the presence of a plasticizer and a free radical initiator. The characteristic properties of PBAST/CMPS blends were investigated by observing their morphology, thermal, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. The good interfacial adhesion between the phases examined by SEM revealed that PBAST/CMPS blends were compatible blends. The tensile strength and elongation decreased with increasing CMPS content, while modulus increased. The biodegradability of the blends was much higher than that of pristine PBAST and increased with increasing CMPS contents.

  • PP/KF felt was used to load a high content of kenaf fiber (KF) into polypropylene (PP), and polyurethane (PU) was used as a binder. In order to find an optimum composition ratio of the PU binder, the flexural strength of the PP/KF/PU felt composite according to the isocyanate and polyol ratio was evaluated. PP-g-MAH grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) was applied as a compatibilizer. Tensile, flexural, and impact properties were evaluated to consider changes in mechanical properties of the PP/KF/PU felt composite, and the properties were improved.

  • In this study, we prepared glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites using Brabender twin-screw extruder. Compatibilizer, polypropylene-based maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH), was used to increase the molecular interaction between polypropylene matrix and glass fiber and to enhance melt processability. We also measured the shear and uniaxial elongational behaviors of glass-fiber reinforced composites in the absence or presence of compatibilizer. The effects of compatibilizer and fiber loading on the viscoelastic behaviors were examined. It was fuund that the PP-g-MAH compatibilizer improved the fluidity and increased the molecular bonding of composite melts in shear flow. Transient elongational viscosity was increased with fiber loadings in uniaxial elongational flow However, it was decreased with increasing elongational rates because of microscale shear flow between fibers.
