A Study on Gender Identity Expressed in Fashion in Music Video

  • In present modern society, media contributes more to the constructing of personal identities than any other medium. Music video, a postmodernism branch among a variety of media, offers a complex experience of sounds combined with visual images. In particular. fashion in music video helps conveying contexts effectively and functions as a medium of immediate communication by visual effect. Considering the socio-cultural effects of music video. gender identity represented in fashion in it can be of great importance. Therefore, this study is geared to the reconsidering of gender identity represented through costumes in music video by analyzing fashions in it. Gender identity in socio-cultural category is classified as masculinity, femininity, and the third sex. By examining fashions based on the classification. this study will help to create new design concepts and to understand gender identity in fashion. The results of this study are as follows: First. masculinity in music video fashion was categorized into stereotyped masculinity, sexual masculinity. and metro sexual masculinity. Second, femininity in music video fashion was categorized into stereotyped femininity. sexual femininity, and contra sexual femininity. Third, the third sex in music video fashion was categorized into transvestism, masculinization of female, and feminization of male. This phenomenon is presented into music videos through females in male attire and males in female attire. Through this research, gender identity represented in fashion of music video was demonstrated, and the importance of the relationship between representation of identity through fashion and socio-cultural environment was reconfirmed.

성역할정체감에 따른 체면민감성과 외모관리행동 (Social Face Sensitivity and Appearance Management Behaviors according to Sex Role Identity)

  • The purpose of this study was to classify sex role identity into groups and analyze the difference of social face sensitivity and appearance management behaviors by sex role identity. Questionnaires were administered to 306 people in their twenties and thirties living in Daegu Metropolitan City and Kyoungbuk province. The data was analyzed by using frequency, factor analysis, credibility, ${\chi}^2$-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test, and t-test. The findings were as follows. Sex role identity were classified into four groups (androgyny, masculineness, feminineness, and undifferentiation). Men in androgyny group showed the highest rate of 41.3% followed by undifferentiation(24.7%), masculineness(21.3%), and feminineness(12.7%). Women in undifferentiation group showed the highest rate of 35.9% followed by feminineness(24.4%), androgyny(23.7%), and masculineness(16.0%). Social face sensitivity were composed of four factors (consciousness of being embarrassed, social formality, other consciousness, and prestige). Appearance management behaviors were composed of six factors (skin management, fashion image management, plastic surgery management, weight management, hair management, and health management). According to the result of a significant difference between social face sensitivity and appearance management behaviors by sex role identity, male showed significant difference between the sub-variables of social face sensitivity factors (consciousness of being embarrassed, social formality, and other consciousness). Both of the male and female showed a significance of difference in consciousness of being embarrassed, and social formality. Male showed significant difference between the sub-variables of appearance management behaviors factors (fashion image management, weight management, hair management, and health management). Both of the male and female showed a significance of difference in fashion image management. Gender of twenties and thirties showed distinction between the sub-variables of social face sensitivity factors (consciousness of being embarrassed, and prestige) and appearance management behaviors (skin management, fashion image management, plastic surgery management, weight management, and hair management).

20-30대 남성 소비자들의 의복쇼핑성향과 성역할 정체성에 관한 연구 (Clothing Shopping Orientation and Sex Role Identity of Male Consumers Aged Between 20 and 40)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between male consumers' clothing shopping orientation and sex role identity. Since shopping, especially clothing shopping has been traditionally considered a female job, it was expected that male consumers' sex role identity would influence how they approach the task of clothing shopping. Data were collected through an Internet survey firm from men aged between 20 and 40 years(N=199). The major results are as follows: 1. Based on the six clothing shopping orientation factors identified tv factor analysis, the respondents were categorized into 5 distinct groups: Self-Directed Shoppers, Planners, Brand-Oriented Shoppers, Convenience Shoppers, and Impulsive High-Involvers. 2. Five sex role factors were identified by factor analysis: two masculinity factors (strong and reticent) and three femininity factors(gentle, meticulous, and affable). Among these factors, 'gentle' was considered the most ideal, followed in order by 'strong,' 'meticdous,' 'affable,' and 'reticent.' 3. The results of MANOVA showed that the clothing shopping orientation groups statistically differed in their perceived sex role identity as well as in their ideal sex role identity. Overall, Self-Directed Shoppers and Impulsive High-Involvers scored higher in both perceived masculinity and femininity than the other groups. Convenience Shoppers and Planners were high in femininity but low in masculinity. The Brand-Oriented Shoppers were low in both masculinity and femininity. The results indicate that Korean males who are in their 20s and 30s consider androgyny as a desirable state. In addition, those who are high in androgyny are more likely to be highly involved in clothing shopping.

성역할 개념, 의복 성정체감, 유니섹스 의복에 대한 태도 사이의 상관 연구 -대전, 충남북 지역의 남녀 대학생을 중심으로- (An ex post facto Relational Study of Genderlogy, and Gender Identity of Clothing and Attitudes toward Unisex Clothing -female and male college students in Taejeon, Chungnam, and Chungbuk province-)

  • The purposes of this study were 1) to find out any significant relationships among genderlogy, gender identity of clothing, and attitudes toward unisex clothing, 2) to investi- gate differences in genderlogy, gender identity of clothing, and attitudes toward unisex clothing between female and male college students, 3) to understand the structual dimension of genderlogy. The theory of this study was Bem's androgyny sex role theory which suggested an individual's masculine and feminine sex role lied on separate lines rather than on a linear line. The research design was an ex post facto survey and the subjects were 222 female college students and 179 male students in Taejeon, Chungnam and Chungbuk province. Using the SPSS program, factor analysis, 1-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and plot were calculated for statistical analysis. The findings of this study were summarized as follows: 1) The 1.test showed significant differences in genderloy, gender identity of clothing, attitudes toward unisex clothing between female and male college students. 2) There were significant relationship among genderlogy, gender identity of clothing, attitudes toward unisex clothing. 3) The moi or dimensions of genderlogy were found to be traditional sex role and equal sex roles. There were only moderate negative relationship between traditional and equal sex roles and these two dimensions affected differently on the gender identity of clothing, as well as the attitudes toward unisex clothing, therefore traditional sex roles and equal sex roles seemed to lie on separate lines, and the androgyny sex role theory was supported.

대학생의 성역할정체감과 건강행위 (Sex Role Identity and Health Behavior among University Student)

  • This study is to investigate sex role identity and health behavior among university students in Seoul, during the late of 1999. The instruments for data obtainment were KSRI of Kim(1994), and Health Style : A Self-Test provided by ODPHP National Health Information Center. These instrument were reliable, showing Cronbach $\alpha$ .98 and .77. Frequency, t-test, $x^2$-test, stepwise regression were conducted for data analysis, using SAS 6.12 program. The major findings were as follows : 1. For female student. Androgeny(34.0%)type was most common and subjects of feminity type were 28.7%. In contrast, Masculinity type(41.8%) was most prevalent. and undifferentiated type was 30.1% among male students. There were significant difference between male and female student in the type of sex role identity. 2. 89.6% of all subjects were included in risk group for exercise and physical activity, 86.4% for diet habit, 43.2% for alcohol drinking and drug use, 35.6% for stress control, 32.8% for safety behavior, 24.8% for smoking. The big health risk behavior problem of male students were smoking, drinking, diet habit, and exercise. The important health risk behavior problem were diet habit and exercise. There were significant difference in smoking, drinking, exercise between sex. 3. Analysis of the distribution by sex role identity type and health behavior revealed that subjects who were undifferentiated typed group had high risk behavior in stress control, safety, exercise, drinking. Smoking and drinking were more problematic for masculinity typed group had high risk behavior in diet and exercise. The data showed that androginy typed group had more healthy behavior, compared with other sex role identity typed group for all of health behavior. Further research is need to understand the role of sex role identity in health behavior, the variables associated with them. And sex role identity has to be considered in research and practice about health promotion.

대학생의 성역할정체감 유형에 따른 건강행위 (A Study of Health Behavior According to the Gender Role Identity among University Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate gender role identity and health behavior and to explore the relationship between gender role identity and health behavior among university student. Method: Participants were 245 university students who lived in Daegu. Each participant was administered the KGRII (Korean Gender Role Identity Inventory), and Healthy Life Style: A self-test provided by ODDHP National Health Information Center. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, ${\chi}^2$-test with SPSS 11.0 PC Program. Result: 1. As a result of health behavior level, male students had more health risk behavior problems than female students in smoking(p=.00) and drinking (p=.03). Female students had more health risk behavior problems than male students in exercise and physical activity(p=.00). 2. For female students, feminity type (29.3%) was most common, subjects of undifferentiated type was 26.4%. For male students, masculinity type(32.4%) was most prevalent, and androgenic type was 31.4%. 3. Androginy typed group had more healthy behavior compared with other gender role identity typed group. In contrast, undifferentiated typed group had more high risk behavior compared with other typed group for all of health behavior. Conclusion: These results suggest that gender role identity is a stronger predictor of heath related variable than is sex of subject. Therefore effect methods to develop health promotion program should consider not only sex difference but gender role identity.

병원 종사자의 성 역할 정체감과 성 고정관념이 남자간호사에 대한 편견에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of the Gender Role Identity and Gender Stereotypes on the Prejudice Against Male Nurses of Hospital Workers)

  • 여성이 대다수인 간호전문직에 남자간호사가 점차 증가하고 있으나, 그들은 성 고정관념에 따른 사회적 장벽에 부딪히며, 부서배치 등에서 차별을 경험하고 있었다. 본 연구는 병원 종사자들을 대상으로 성 역할 정체감과 성 고정관념이 남자간호사에 대한 편견에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위하여 시도되었다. 연구 결과 양성성 집단은 성 고정관념과 남자간호사에 대한 편견이 다른 집단에 비해 낮았으며, 병원종사자들은 남자 간호사들이 일반인들에게 낯설고 생소하며, 응급실, 중환자실, 수술실 같은 병원의 특수 부서에서 주로 일할 것이라는 편견을 가지고 있었고, 성 고정관념은 남자간호사에 대한 편견에 양의 상관관계가 있었다. 따라서 의료기관은 남자간호사에 대한 편견을 해소하기 위해 양성 평등적인 조직문화를 구축하기 위한 계획을 수립하여 성 고정관념을 탈피하기 위해 노력하고, 간호조직 내에서 남성과 여성이 동등한 기회를 부여받을 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다.

간호대학생의 성별에 따른 성정체성, 성평등의식과 자아존중감 (Gender Identity, Gender Equality, and Self Esteem of Nursing College Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences between gender identity, gender equality, and self-esteem among nursing college students. Methods: The subjects were nursing college students who were selected from 4 different nursing colleges. We measured gender identity, gender equality, and self-esteem using verified measurement tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. Results: Gender equality among nursing college students showed a significant difference between male students and female students. Male students had higher gender equality scores than female students on all 4 types of gender equality. Conclusion: Male nursing college students that there are differences in gender equality, especially in the areas of education and employment. Based on these results, we suggest that future work should focus on developing a curriculum to increase awareness of gender equality among under graduate students, and thereby build an organizational culture of mutual respect for gender equality among clinical nurses.

지역아동센터 이용 청소년의 진로정체감에 영향을 미치는 변인 분석: 성별에 따른 잠재평균 및 경로계수 크기 차이 검증 (Influential Factors for Career Identity of Adolescents in Community Child Center: An Application of Latent Mean Analysis and Focusing on Gender Differences)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 지역아동센터 이용 청소년의 부모-자녀 대화, 또래애착, 센터교사만족도, 자아탄력성, 자아존중감, 진로정체감 간 구조적 관계를 탐색하고, 성별에 따른 잠재평균 및 구조모형의 경로계수의 크기 차이를 검증하는 것이다. 지역아동센터 아동패널조사 2기 패널 4차 조사(2017년)의 청소년 438명이 분석 대상이다. 첫째, 구조모형 분석 결과, 또래애착 및 센터교사만족도는 자아탄력성과 자아존중감에 정적 영향을 미치는 반면, 부모-자녀 대화는 자아탄력성, 자아존중감에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 그리고 또래애착 및 센터교사만족도는 자아탄력성, 자아존중감을 매개로 진로정체감에 정적 영향을 미치는 완전매개효과가 확인되었다. 둘째, 잠재평균분석 결과, 남학생이 여학생보다 자아탄력성, 자아존중감이 더 높은 반면, 여학생이 남학생보다 부모-자녀 대화 정도가 더 많은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 다집단 경로계수 크기 차이 검증 결과, 남학생은 여학생보다 또래애착이 자아탄력성과 자아존중감에 더 많은 영향을 미치며, 여학생은 남학생보다 센터교사만족도가 자아탄력성에 더 많은 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 지역아동센터 이용 청소년의 진로정체감을 향상시키기 위해서는 사회적 지지 체계를 통한 자아탄력성과 자아존중감을 높이는 것이 필요하며, 이때 성별에 따른 차별적 특성을 고려한 접근이 필요함을 시사한다.

Method: The subjects consisted of 245 college students in Daegu. Each participant was administered the KGRII of Lee, Kim, Koh(2002) and Sex Stereotype scales modified by Kim, Dongil(1999). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, $x^2-test$, Sheffe test with SPSS 11.0 PC Program. Result: 1. For male students, masculinity type(32.4%) was most prevalent but for female students, feminity type (29.3%) was most common. 2. Female students were inclined to oppose traditional sex-role rather than male students. And the over 23 years old group tended to resist traditional sex-roles rather than other aged group. 3. The Androginy typed group had more progressive sex-role compared with undifferentiated typed group. Conclusion: These results suggest that gender role identity and sex stereotype were difference in sex and age. And the androgyny typed group had more progressive sex-role compared with other gender role identity typed group.
